A simple and sensitive assay for ampicillin in pharmaceuticals using gold nanoparticles as spectroscopic probe reagent

Carbon-based nanozymes: design, catalytic mechanisms, and environmental applications

Carbon-based nanozymes are synthetic nanomaterials that are predominantly constituted of carbon-based materials, which mimic the catalytic properties of natural enzymes, boasting features such as tunable catalytic activity, robust regenerative capacity, and exceptional stability. Due to the impressive enzymatic performance similar to various enzymes such as peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and oxidase, they are widely used for detecting and degrading pollutants in the environment. This paper presents an exhaustive review of the fundamental design principles, catalytic mechanisms, and prospective applications of carbon-based nanozymes in the environmental field. These studies not only serve to augment the comprehension on the intricate operational mechanism inherent in these synthetic nanostructures, but also provide essential guidelines and illuminating perspectives for advancing their development and practical applications. Future studies that are imperative to delve into the untapped potential of carbon-based nanozymes within the environmental domain was needed to be explored to fully harness their ability to deliver broader and more impactful environmental preservation and management outcomes.

Rapid and naked-eye colorimetric detection of ultra trace sumatriptan in drinking water, saliva, and human urine samples based on the aggregation of gold nanoparticles

In this study, the determination of sumatriptan (SUM) was performed using a simple, rapid, and precise colorimetric method based on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) feature of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). By adding SUM, the aggregation was observed in AuNPs with red-to-blue color shifts. The size distribution of NPs was estimated before and after adding SUM via dynamic light scattering (DLS), which was found to be 15.34 and 97.45 nm, respectively. Characterization of AuNPs, SUM, and AuNPs in combination with SUM was investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Examining the effect of pH, the volume of buffer, the concentration of AuNPs, interaction time, and ionic strength revealed that their optimal values were 6, 100 μL, 5 μM, 14 min, and 12 μg L-1, respectively. The suggested method was able to determine the amount of SUM in a linear range of 10 to 250 μg L-1 with a limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.392 and 1.03 μg L-1, respectively. This approach was successfully applied to determine SUM in drinking water, saliva, and human urine samples with relative standard deviations (RSD) lower than 0.03%, 0.3%, and 1.0%, respectively.

A three-dimensional dynamic DNA walker-mediated branching hybridization chain reaction for the ultrasensitive fluorescence sensing of ampicillin

In this study, a novel, rapid and ultrasensitive fluorescence strategy using the three-dimensional (3D) dynamic DNA walker (DW)-induced branched hybridization chain reaction (bHCR) has been proposed for the detection of ampicillin (AMP). The sensing system was composed of an Nt·Bbvcl-powered DNA walker blocked by an AMP aptamer, hairpin-shaped DNA track probe (TP) and four kinds of metastable hairpin probes as the substrates of bHCR, which triggered the formation of the split G-quadruplex as the signal molecule. Due to the reasonable design, the specific binding between AMP and its aptamer activated the DW, and the DW moved on the surface of the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with the help of Nt·Bbvcl to produce primer probes (PPs), which induced bHCR. The products of the bHCR gathered two split G-quadruplex sequences together to form one complete G-quadruplex. The formed G-quadruplex emitted a strong fluorescence signal in the presence of thioflavin-T (ThT) to achieve the purpose of detecting AMP. The sensitivity of this method was greatly improved by the use of the 3D DNA walker and bHCR. The split G-quadruplex enhanced the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Under the optimal experimental conditions, a good correlation was obtained between the fluorescence intensity of the sensing system and the concentration of AMP ranging from 5 pM to 500 nM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.68 pM. Simultaneously, the method has been applied to the detection of antibiotics in spiked milk samples with satisfactory results.

A rapid and sensitive assay for determination of doxycycline using thioglycolic acid-capped cadmium telluride quantum dots

A rapid, simple and inexpensive spectrofluorimetric sensor for determination of doxycycline based on its interaction with thioglycolic acid-capped cadmium telluride quantum dots (TGA/CdTe QDs) has been developed. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the sensor exhibited a fast response time of <10s. The results revealed that doxycycline could quench the fluorescence of TGA/CdTe QDs via electron transfer from the QDs to doxycycline through a dynamic quenching mechanism. The sensor permitted determination of doxycycline in a concentration range of 1.9×10(-6)-6.1×10(-5)molL(-1) with a detection limit of 1.1×10(-7)molL(-1). The sensor was applied for determination of doxycycline in honey and human serum samples.
