Yield and Nitrogen Uptake in Wheat and Chickpea Grown Under Elevated Carbon Dioxide Level

Influence of cyanobacterial inoculants, elevated carbon dioxide, and temperature on plant and soil nitrogen in soybean

Climate change affects nitrogen dynamics in crops and diazotrophic microorganisms with carbon dioxide (CO2 ) sequestering potential such as cyanobacteria can be promising options. The interactions of three cyanobacterial formulations (Anabaena laxa, Calothrix elenkinii and Anabaena torulosa-Bradyrhizobium japonicum biofilm) on plant and soil nitrogen in soybean, were investigated under elevated CO2 and temperature conditions. Soybean plants were grown inside Open Top Chambers under ambient and elevated (550 ± 25 ppm) CO2 concentrations and elevated temperature (+2.5-2.8°C). Interactive effect of elevated CO2 and cyanobacterial inoculation through A. laxa and Anabaena torulosa-B. japonicum biofilm led to improved growth, yield, nodulation, nitrogen fixation, and seed N in soybean crop. Nitrogenase activity in nodules increased in A. laxa and biofilm treatments, with an increase of 55% and 72%, respectively, over no cyanobacterial inoculation treatment. Although high temperature alone reduced soil microbial biomass carbon, dehydrogenase activity, and soil available N, the combined effect of CO2 and temperature were stimulatory; cyanobacterial inoculation further led to an increase under all the conditions. The highest seed N uptake (758 mg plant-1 ) was recorded with cyanobacterial biofilm inoculation under elevated CO2 with control temperature conditions. The positive interactions of elevated CO2 and cyanobacterial inoculation, particularly through A. laxa and A. torulosa-B. japonicum biofilm inoculation highlights their potential in counteracting the negative impact of changing climate along with enhancing plant and soil N in soybean.

The Potential Impact of Climate Change on the Micronutrient-Rich Food Supply

Micronutrient deficiencies are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries worldwide. Climate change, characterized by increasing global surface temperatures and alterations in rainfall, has the capacity to affect the quality and accessibility of micronutrient-rich foods. The goals of this review are to summarize the potential effects of climate change and its consequences on agricultural yield and micronutrient quality, primarily zinc, iron, and vitamin A, of plant foods and upon the availability of animal foods, to discuss the implications for micronutrient deficiencies in the future, and to present possible mitigation and adaptive strategies. In general, the combination of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide and rising temperature is predicted to reduce the overall yield of major staple crops, fruits, vegetables, and nuts, more than altering their micronutrient content. Crop yield is also reduced by elevated ground-level ozone and increased extreme weather events. Pollinator loss is expected to reduce the yield of many pollinator-dependent crops such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Sea-level rise resulting from melting of ice sheets and glaciers is predicted to result in coastal inundation, salt intrusion, and loss of coral reefs and mangrove forests, with an adverse impact upon coastal rice production and coastal fisheries. Global ocean fisheries catch is predicted to decline because of ocean warming and declining oxygen. Freshwater warming is also expected to alter ecosystems and reduce inland fisheries catch. In addition to limiting greenhouse gas production, adaptive strategies include postharvest fortification of foods; micronutrient supplementation; biofortification of staple crops with zinc and iron; plant breeding or genetic approaches to increase zinc, iron, and provitamin A carotenoid content of plant foods; and developing staple crops that are tolerant of abiotic stressors such as elevated carbon dioxide, elevated temperature, and increased soil salinity.

Effect of elevated carbon-dioxide on plant growth, physiology, yield and seed quality of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) in Indo-Gangetic plains

In the present scenario of climate change with constantly increasing CO₂ concentration, there is a risk of altered crop performance in terms of growth, yield, grain nutritional value and seed quality. Therefore, an experiment was conducted in open top chamber (OTCs) during 2017-18 and 2018-19 to assess the effect of elevated atmospheric carbondioxide (e[CO₂]) (600 ppm) on chickpea (cv. JG 14) crop growth, biomass accumulation, physiological function, seed yield and its quality in terms of germination and vigour. The e[CO₂] treatment increased the plant height, leaf and stem biomass over ambient CO₂ (a[CO₂]) treatment. The e[CO₂] increased seed yield by 11-18% which was attributed to an increase in the number of pods (6-10%) and seeds plant^-1 (8-9%) over a[CO₂]. However, e[CO₂] reduced the seed protein (7%), total phenol (13%) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (12%) and increased the starch (21%) and water uptake rate as compared to seeds harvested from a[CO₂] environment. Exposing chickpea plant to e[CO₂] treatment had no impact on germination and vigour of the harvested seeds. Also, the physical attributes, total soluble sugar and antioxidant enzymes activities of harvested seeds were comparable in a[CO₂] and e[CO₂] treatment. Hence, the experimental findings depict that e[CO₂] upto 600 ppm could add to the growth and productivity of chickpea in a sub-tropical climate with an implication on its nutritional quality of the produce.
