Joining the meta-research movement: A bibliometric case study of the journal Perspectives on Medical Education

What if we consider research teams as teams?

Research teams are an important means by which knowledge is generated in Health Professions Education (HPE). Although funding agencies encourage the formation of interdisciplinary and interprofessional research teams, we know little about how our interdisciplinary and interprofessional research teams are functioning, nor how best to ensure their success. Indeed, while HPE Scholarship Units and research environments have been the object of study, little work has been focused on research teams themselves. In this article, the authors propose that research teams should be studied as unique instantiations of teams where several individuals work together towards a common goal. Considering research teams as a team can encourage attention to how effective teams are built, supported, and celebrated, it can acknowledge that competent individuals may form incompetent teams, and it opens important avenues for future research. Turning our attention to better understanding how and when research teams thrive should support the development of more effective teams; resulting in reduced waste and redundancy, better mobilization of team members' time and skills, and enhanced knowledge generation. Considering research teams as teams, encourages an understanding that these teams require care, commitment, and effort to sustain them, and it acknowledges that pursuing research in a team context is both a collaborative and a social endeavour.

Some Contributions from Embodied Cognition to Psychonarratology

Psychonarratology is a discipline that combines classic frameworks in narratology and psycholinguistics. The goal of this review article is to highlight the contributions that recent evidence from causality processing studies, conceptual metaphor theory and embodied cognition can make to Psychonarratology, in order to promote a more comprehensive study of narrative. We argue that, in order to increase its descriptive and explanatory power, Psychonarratology would benefit from a more strongly interdisciplinary approach. This approach would integrate grounded theoretical cognition and recent methods from different disciplines. With this aim, we review study evidence that highlights the fundamental link between cognition and causal connections in narratives, as well as proposals from conceptualization theories. These approaches indicate that metaphorical mappings and discourse connections play a crucial role in the establishment of narrative sequences. Moreover, we elaborate on the contributions that recent advances in research on embodied cognition, causality processing and Conceptual Metaphor Theory can make to the theoretical and methodological framework of Psychonarratology, such as promoting the design of more ecologically valid tasks, and the study of narrative production and comprehension by non-neurotypical participants.

A Bibliometric Analysis of the 100 Most Cited Articles on Problem-Based Learning in Medical Education

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional approach used in medical education that is characterized by solving problems in small groups with tutor guidance. More than 50 years since PBL's inception, many questions remain to be addressed about its processes and learning outcomes. The purpose of the study was to examine the bibliometric characteristics of the 100 most cited articles on PBL in medical education and to identify landmark papers that have made significant contributions to PBL research. Results were systematically reviewed for citation frequency, publication year, journal, article type, article focus, authors, author collaboration, and country collaboration. The number of citations ranged from 81 to 3531 times cited with 31,041 total citations. The articles were contributed by 211 authors in 23 journals and most articles (68%) were published in Medical Education, Academic Medicine, and Medical Teacher. The majority of the articles (71%) originated from Netherlands, Canada, and the United States and six prolific authors were identified. Almost half of the articles are classified as empirical research. Article foci included theoretical foundations of PBL, curriculum design, learning outcomes and processes, tutors, assessment, guides to PBL implementation, commentaries, and student well-being. The strong author and country collaborations indicate continued global interest in the PBL instructional method, which is likely to remain an active topic of research as the evidence of its effectiveness over traditional instructional methods as well as its most impactful components is inconclusive.
