Abstract
Silk fibroin (SF) as a natural biopolymer has become a popular material for biomedical applications due to its minimal immunogenicity, tunable biodegradability, and high biocompatibility. Nowadays, various techniques have been developed for the applications of SF in bioengineering. Most of the literature reviews focus on the SF-based biomaterials and their different forms of applications such as films, hydrogels, and scaffolds. SF is also valuable as a coating on other substrate materials for biomedicine; however, there are few reviews related to SF-coated biomaterials. Thus, in this review, we focused on the surface modification of biomaterials using SF coatings, demonstrated their various preparation methods on substrate materials, and introduced the latest procedures. The diverse applications of SF coatings for biomedicine are discussed, including bone, ligament, skin, mucosa, and nerve regeneration, and dental implant surface modification. SF coating is conducive to inducing cell adhesion and migration, promoting hydroxyapatite (HA) deposition and matrix mineralization, and inhibiting the Notch signaling pathway, making it a promising strategy for bone regeneration. In addition, SF-coated composite scaffolds can be considered prospective candidates for ligament regeneration after injury. SF coating has been proven to enhance the mechanical properties of the substrate material, and render integral stability to the dressing material during the regeneration of skin and mucosa. Moreover, SF coating is a potential strategy to accelerate nerve regeneration due to its dielectric properties, mechanical flexibility, and angiogenesis promotion effect. In addition, SF coating is an effective and popular means for dental implant surface modification to promote osteogenesis around implants made of different materials. Thus, this review can be of great benefit for further improvements in SF-coated biomaterials, and will undoubtedly contribute to clinical transformation in the future.

Abstract
The skin is the largest organ and one of the most important in the human body, and is constantly exposed to pathogenic microorganisms that cause infections; then, pharmacological administration is required. One of the basic medical methods for treating chronic wounds is to use topical dressings with characteristics that promote wound healing. Fiber-based dressings mimic the local dermal extracellular matrix (ECM), maintaining an ideal wound-healing climate. This work proposes electrospun PHB/PEG polymeric microfibers as dressings for administering the antibiotic gentamicin directed at skin infections. PHB-PEG/gentamicin fibers were characterized before and after plasma treatment by Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, and XRD. SEM was used to evaluate fiber morphology and yarn size. The plasma treatment improved the hydrophilicity of the PHB/PEG/gentamicin fibers. The release of gentamicin in the plasma-treated fibers was more sustained over time than in the untreated ones.

Abstract
Wound skin infections can cause significant morbidity and even mortality. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are a type of nano cellulose that have reached notable attention due to their inimitable properties. In this study, in order to prepare a novel wound dressing, CNFs are composited with poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to enhance mechanical properties and increase cell proliferation and migration. Also, carbon quantum dots (CQDs)- Fe3O4 was introduced as a novel antibacterial, and rosemary extract (RE) was composited with this to reduce its cell toxicity. PVA - CNFs/ CQDs- Fe3O4- RE nanofiber was prepared using the electrospinning method. Then, to maximize tensile strength, total elongation, and percentage swelling of PVA - CNFs/ CQDs- Fe3O4- RE electrospun nanofiber, parameters of crosslinking duration and the concentration of CQDs- Fe3O4-RE were optimized employing central composite design, and optimized electrospun nanofiber (OEN) as a novel wound dressing was prepared. Results exhibited, the high antibacterial properties of CQDs-Fe3O4-RE. Also, CNFs and CQDs- Fe3O4-RE increased the tensile strength of OEN. Moreover, CNFs and RE reduce wound area percentages and increase the percentage of cell viability, respectively. Therefore, OEN was introduced as a suitable wound dressing due to its appropriate surface roughness, mechanical properties, WVTR, biodegradation, prolonged release, non-toxicity, and high cell proliferation and migration ability.

Abstract
The application of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) is ubiquitous in various sciences. MSNs possess unique features, including the diversity in manufacturing by different synthesis methods and from different sources, structure controllability, pore design capabilities, pore size tunability, nanoparticle size distribution adjustment, and the ability to create diverse functional groups on their surface. These characteristics have led to various types of MSNs as a unique system for drug delivery. In this review, first, the synthesis of MSNs by different methods via using different sources were studied. Then, the parameters affecting their physicochemical properties and functionalization have been discussed. Finally, the last decade’s novel strategies, including surface functionalization, drug delivery, and cancer treatment, based on the MSNs in drug delivery and cancer therapy have been addressed.

Abstract
Plasma-based strategies offer several advantages for developing antibacterial biomaterials and can be used directly or combined with other surface modification techniques. Direct plasma strategies can be classified as plasma surface modifications that derive antibacterial property by tailoring surface topography or surface chemistry. Nano patterns induced by plasma modification can exhibit antibacterial property and promote the adhesion and proliferation of mammalian cells, creating antibacterial and biocompatible surfaces. Antibacterial effect by tailoring surface chemistry via plasma can be attained by either creating bacteriostatic surfaces or bactericidal surfaces. Plasma-assisted strategies incorporate plasma processes in combination with other surface modification techniques. Plasma coating can serve as a drug-eluting reservoir and diffusion barrier. The plasma-functionalized surface can serve as a platform for grafting antibacterial agents, and plasma surface activation can improve the adhesion of polymeric layers with antibacterial properties. This article critically reviews plasma-based strategies reported in the recent literature for the development of antibacterial biomaterial surfaces. Studies using both atmospheric and low-pressure plasmas are included in this review. The findings are discussed in terms of the trends in material and precursor selection, modification stability, antibacterial efficacy, the choice of bacterial strains tested, cell culture findings, critical aspects of in vitro performance testing and in vivo experimental design.
