Identifying the Factors Affecting Methamphetamine Use: A Scoping Review

Background

One of the critical factors affecting chronic diseases is the use of drugs, especially industrial substances, such as methamphetamine. Methamphetamine use is increasingly common among the younger members of society. Methamphetamine is not only physically and mentally destructive, but also has a significant impact on the families of abusers and society, and imposes a financial burden on society. The present study aims to identify the factors affecting methamphetamine use in a scoping review.

Methods

Different keywords of methamphetamine were selected in the Mesh database and were searched in valid English databases from January 1, 2008, to April 5, 2022. Inclusion and exclusion criteria in this study were languages, reported findings, time range, and type of article. This study was designed by scoping review method developed by Askey Malley'O.

Results

The total articles that were finally analyzed in this article were 42 including 12 English articles and 30 Persian articles. Among these articles, the most important factors affecting Methamphetamine are individual, social, and family factors, which have received the most cited.

Conclusion

The majority of research highlights the importance of individual factors, society, and family factors, respectively, while formulating policies for prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation must be considered. It is suggested that structural path analysis be determined by prioritizing the identified factors and the weights of these components.

Thymoquinone abrogates methamphetamine-induced striatal neurotoxicity and hyperlocomotor activity in mice

Background and purpose:

Methamphetamine (METH) abuse has devastating consequences on the nervous system. There are limited therapy choices in METH abuse with reduced effectiveness and elevated recurrence rates. Thymoquinone (TQ), the most bioactive constituent of Nigella sativa seeds exerts neuroprotective effects mainly via antioxidant properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of TQ against METH-induced striatal neurotoxicity and hyperlocomotor activity in mice.

Experimental approach:

Our groups of animals received METH (10 mg/kg) four times a day with 2 h intervals. Normal saline or TQ (5, 10, or 20 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally 30 min before METH administration. Control and sham groups received vehicle or TQ, respectively. The rectal temperature and behavioral tests including the open field for locomotor activity and rotarod for motor coordination were evaluated. The level of superoxide dismutase (SOD), as well as pathological changes, were also assessed in the striatum region.

Findings/Results:

No significant differences in rectal temperatures were observed among treated groups. Administration of METH increased locomotor activity and did not change motor coordination. TQ co-administration with METH significantly reduced the central and total locomotion and the mean latency to fall off the rotarod in a dose-dependent manner compared with the METH group. TQ also alleviated the METH-induced decrease in the activity of SOD.TQ, especially at the high dose, reduced the METH-induced reactive gliosis level.

Conclusion and implications:

In conclusion, TQ prevents the enhanced locomotor activity, antioxidant impairment, and morphological striatal damage caused by METH in mice. TQ may be a potential candidate for the treatment of specific METH-induced brain disorders or neurological diseases.

Beyond the tip of the iceberg: A narrative review to identify research gaps on comorbid psychiatric disorders in adolescents with methamphetamine use disorder or chronic methamphetamine use

BACKGROUND

Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) frequently begins in adolescence, often accompanied by other psychiatric or mental disorders. Up to now, no comprehensive review about MUD and comorbid disorders in adolescents is available. We thus aimed to review the literature on comorbid mental disorders and MUD in adolescents in order to identify future research topics. Method: A PubMed search was conducted in July 2019. Relevant comorbidities were defined as attention-deficit disorder with/without hyperactivity, anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychosis, borderline personality disorder, conduct disorder and antisocial personality disorder, as well as other substance use disorders. For each comorbidity, we summarized prevalence rates, findings on comorbidity mechanisms, and recommended treatment options, if applicable. Results: Few articles focused on MUD in adolescents. Prevalence rates differed largely between comorbid disorders, with tobacco use disorder, conduct disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, and attention-deficit disorders being the most prevalent comorbidities while eating disorders were rare. Examined onset patterns and comorbidity mechanisms indicated three groups of comorbidities: preexisting disorders self-medicated with methamphetamine, disorders induced by chronic methamphetamine use, and disorders arising due to risk factors shared with MUD. Reviewed comorbidities were frequently associated with worse treatment outcomes. Conclusions: The limited evidence is in stark contrast to the presumably high prevalence and relevance of comorbid mental disorders in adolescents with MUD. Suggestions for future research topics, informed by adult findings, include genetic vulnerabilities, biological changes, and consequences of different use patterns. Surprisingly few MUD treatment programs explicitly integrate comorbid mental disorder modules.
