Recent advancements in bio-based dielectric and piezoelectric polymers and their biomedical applications

The advent of polymer-based dielectrics marked a significant breakthrough in dielectric materials. However, despite their many advantages, they pose serious environmental threats. Therefore, in recent years, there has been growing interest in bio-based polymers as a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based polymers. Their renewable nature and reduced environmental impact can fulfil the rising demand for eco-friendly substitutes. Beyond their ecological benefits, bio-based polymers also possess distinctive electrical properties that make them extremely attractive in a variety of applications. Considering these, herein, we present recent advancements in bio-based dielectric polymers and nanocomposites. First, the fundamental concepts of dielectric and polymer-based dielectric materials are covered. Then, we will delve into the discussion of recent advancements in the dielectric properties and thermal stability of bio-based polymers, including polylactic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoates, polybutylene succinate, starch, cellulose, chitosan, chitins, and alginates, and their nanocomposites. Other novel bio-based dielectric polymers and their distinct dielectric characteristics have also been pointed out. In an additional section, the piezoelectric properties of these polymers and their recent biomedical applications have been highlighted and discussed thoroughly. In conclusion, this paper thoroughly discusses the recent advances in bio-based dielectric polymers and their potential to revolutionize the biomedical industry while cultivating a more sustainable and greener future.

Recent Advances of Nanogenerator Technology for Cardiovascular Sensing and Monitoring

Cardiovascular sensing and monitoring is a widely used function in cardiovascular devices. Nowadays, achieving desired flexibility, wearability and implantability becomes a major design goal for the advancement of this family of devices. As an emerging technology, nanogenerator (NG) offers an intriguing promise for replacing the battery, an essential obstacle toward tissue-like soft electronics. This article reviews most recent advancements in NG technology for advanced cardiovascular sensing and monitoring. Based on the application targets, the discuss covers implantable NGs on hearts, implantable NGs for blood vessel grafts and patches, and wearable NGs with various sensing functions. The applications of NGs as a power source and as an electromechanical sensing element are both discussed. At the end, current challenges in this direction and future research perspectives are elaborated. This emerging and impactful application direction reviewed in this article is expected to inspire many new research and commercialization opportunities in the field of NG technology.

Biodegradable polymeric materials for flexible and degradable electronics

Biodegradable electronics have great potential to reduce the environmental footprint of electronic devices and to avoid secondary removal of implantable health monitors and therapeutic electronics. Benefiting from the intensive innovation on biodegradable nanomaterials, current transient electronics can realize full components’ degradability. However, design of materials with tissue-comparable flexibility, desired dielectric properties, suitable biocompatibility and programmable biodegradability will always be a challenge to explore the subtle trade-offs between these parameters. In this review, we firstly discuss the general chemical structure and degradation behavior of polymeric biodegradable materials that have been widely studied for various applications. Then, specific properties of different degradable polymer materials such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and flexibility were compared and evaluated for real-life applications. Complex biodegradable electronics and related strategies with enhanced functionality aimed for different components including substrates, insulators, conductors and semiconductors in complex biodegradable electronics are further researched and discussed. Finally, typical applications of biodegradable electronics in sensing, therapeutic drug delivery, energy storage and integrated electronic systems are highlighted. This paper critically reviews the significant progress made in the field and highlights the future prospects.

A Lamellibranchia-inspired epidermal electrode for electrophysiology

The capability to accurately monitor electrophysiological signals and instantly provide feedback to users is crucial for wearable healthcare. However, commercial gel electrodes suffer from drying out and irritation on skin with time, severely affecting signal quality for practical use. Toward a gel-free electrophysiology, epidermal electrodes that can accurately detect biosignals and simultaneously achieve the multifunctional properties of on-skin electronics needs are highly desirable. In this work, inspired by Lamellibranchia, which can adhere tightly to various surfaces using their extensible, adhesive and self-healing byssal threads, we developed a gel-free epidermal electrode to acquire high-quality electrophysiological signals based on a novel polymer substrate design. This polymer (STAR) features extreme stretchability (>2300% strain), high transparency (>90% transmittance at λ = 550 nm), gentle adhesion (adhesion strengths: tens of kPa), and rapid self-healing ability (95% healing efficiency in 10 min). Combined with silver nanowires as conductors, STAR was employed as a self-healing, stretchable and adhesive epidermal electrode for electrophysiological signal recording, showing a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) even higher than that of commercial electrodes, and being able to control an artificial limb as an intermediate for human-machine interface. We believe our Lamellibranchia inspired STAR will pave a new way to design multifunctional polymers for epidermal electronics, accelerating the development of emerging wearable healthcare.

Respiration-driven triboelectric nanogenerators for biomedical applications

As a fundamental and ubiquitous body motion, respiration offers a large amount of biomechanical energy with an average power up to the Watt level through movements of multiple muscles. The energy from respiration featured with excellent stability, accessibility and continuality inspires the design and engineering of biomechanical energy harvesting devices, such as triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), to realize human-powered electronics. This review article is thus dedicated to the emerging respiration-driven TENG technology, covering fundamentals, applications, and perspectives. Specifically, the human breathing mechanics are first introduced serving as the base for the developments of TENG devices with different configurations. Biomedical applications including electrical energy generation, healthcare monitoring, air filtration, gas sensing, electrostimulation, and powering implantable medical devices are then analyzed focusing on the design-application relationships. At last, current developments are summarized and critical challenges for driving these intriguing developments toward practical applications are discussed together with promising solutions.
