Identification of the Best Anthropometric Index for Predicting the 10-Year Cardiovascular Disease in Southwest China: A Large Single-Center, Cross-Sectional Study

Increased cardiovascular risk despite unchanged body composition in non functional adrenal incidentaloma

BACKGROUND

Non-functional adrenal incidentaloma (NFAI) is associated with an increased risk of adverse cardiometabolic outcome. Identifying predictors of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) may enable more appropriate management strategies in patients with NFAI. We aimed to investigate the body composition parameters and ASCVD risk in patients with NFAI.

METHODS

Eighty patients with NFAI and 80 controls matched for age, gender and body mass index (BMI) were included. ASCVD risk was assessed on Framingham Risk Score (FRS) and American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology (AHA/ACC) score. Body composition was evaluated using a segmental body composition analyzer.

RESULTS

There were no significant differences in age, gender, blood pressure or body composition parameters between the two groups. Patients with NFAI had higher FRS and AHA/ACC scores than controls (P=0.017, P=0.024, respectively). In patients with NFAI, independent predictors for FRS were serum cortisol level after 1mg dexamethasone suppression test (DST) and waist/hip ratio (WHR), while independent predictors for AHA/ACC score were serum cortisol level after 1mg DST, WHR and fasting plasma glucose (FPG), in various multivariate linear regression models.

CONCLUSIONS

FRS and AHA/ACC scores may be useful in determining ASCVD risk in patients with NFAI, and serum cortisol level after 1mg DST is an independent predictor of ASCVD in these patients, even in the absence of hypercortisolism.

Redefining Abdominal Contours: An Analysis of Medium Definition Liposuction Abdominoplasty

INTRODUCTION

This study elucidates the application of Medium Definition Liposuction Abdominoplasty, a novel technique for achieving well-defined abdominal contours. The technique focuses on revealing the patient's inherent muscular volume and form by creating thinner flaps compared to traditional liposuction methodologies.

METHODS

Objective evaluations of the abdominal wall's configuration were systematically executed both pre- and post-intervention for each participant. Digital image measurements facilitated by an image software constituted the basis for these assessments. The Body Fat Index was computed using precise measurements from seven distinct anatomical sites, with two measurements taken at each site and subsequently averaged.

RESULTS

Over a span of 63 months, 300 patients underwent this combined procedure, resulting in discernible enhancements in the configuration of their abdominal walls in 97.6% of cases. However, complications such as partial diminution of tension in the muscular wall (2%), distal flap necrosis (0.6%), and minor muscular hernia (0.3%) were observed.

CONCLUSION

The employment of combined muscle plication emerges as an efficacious methodology in meticulously rectifying alterations inherent within the muscular aponeurotic abdominal wall. This technique ensures the preservation of the original anatomical structure and functional dynamics, thereby circumventing the manifestation of local distortions that may arise from inadequate or excessive corrections.

Comparative efficacy of anthropometric indices in predicting 10-year ASCVD risk: insights from NHANES data

Background

Cardiovascular diseases remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Accurately predicting the 10-year risk of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) is crucial for timely intervention and management. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive performance of six anthropometric indices in assessing the 10-year ASCVD risk.

Methods

Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database (1999-2018), the study involved 11,863 participants after applying exclusion criteria. Six anthropometric indices-waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), a body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), and waist-to-height0.5 ratio (WHT.5R)-were calculated. The 10-year ASCVD risk was assessed using the 2013 ACC/AHA guidelines & pooled cohort equations model. Participants were divided into two groups based on an ASCVD risk threshold of 7.5%. Statistical analysis included chi-square tests, odds ratios, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves.

Results

The study found significant differences in baseline characteristics between participants with ASCVD risk less than 7.5% and those with a risk greater than or equal to 7.5%, stratified by gender. In both male and female groups, individuals with higher ASCVD risk exhibited higher age, waist circumference, BMI, and a higher prevalence of health-compromising behaviors. ABSI emerged as the most accurate predictor of ASCVD risk, with the highest area under the curve (AUC) values in both genders. The optimal cut-off values for ABSI was established for effective risk stratification (cut-off value = 0.08).

Conclusion

The study underscores the importance of anthropometric indices, particularly ABSI, in predicting the 10-year risk of ASCVD. These findings suggest that ABSI, along with other indices, can be instrumental in identifying individuals at higher risk for ASCVD, thereby aiding in early intervention and prevention strategies.

Anthropometric Measures of Adiposity as Markers of Kidney Dysfunction: A Cross-Sectional Study

The present study was designed to provide information on the ability of several different anthropometric markers to reflect the renal impairment associated with body weight increase and to predict the development of renal alterations linked to overweight and obesity. In 574 subjects representative of the general population of the Pressioni Arteriose Monitorate e Loro Associazioni (PAMELA) study, with an age range between 57 and 73 years, we investigated the association between different anthropometric markers of body fat, as alternative to body mass index, and renal failure, to obtain information useful for determining their potential predictive value. Renal dysfunction was significantly associated with almost all anthropometric markers of adiposity related to body weight and body shape. After adjustment for confounders, such as age, sex, office blood pressure, serum glucose, antihypertensive drugs and smoking habit, association remained significant only for waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), lipid accumulation product (LAP) and visceral adiposity index (VAI). These 3 markers also displayed at the receiver operating curves (ROC) analysis the best ability to detect subjects with or without kidney dysfunction. The results of the present study provide evidence that WHR, LAP and VAI represent the best markers of renal dysfunction associated with visceral body fat accumulation.
