Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the role of multiparametric ultrasound (mpUS) in the characterization of focal breast lesions (FBLs). METHODS This prospective study enrolled patients undergoing multiparametric breast ultrasound for FBLs. An experienced breast radiologist evaluated the following ultrasound features: US BI-RADS category, vascularization pattern (internal, vessels in rim and combined) and presence of penetrating vessels with each Doppler method (Color-Doppler, Power-Doppler, Microvascular imaging), strain ratio (SR) and Tsukuba score (TS) with Strain Elastography (SE), Emax, Emean, Emin and Eratio with 2D-shear wave elastography (2D-SWE). Core biopsy for all BI-RADS 4-5 FBLs and 24-month follow-up for all BI-RADS 2-3 FBLs were considered for standard of reference. The diagnostic performance was assessed with the area under curve (AUCs) and cut-off values were determined according to the Youden's index. RESULTS A total of 139 FBLs were included with 75/139 (53.9%) benign and 64/139 (46.1%) malignant FBLs. Internal vascularization patterns (p < 0.001), penetrating vessels (p < 0.001), TS 4-5 (p < 0.001) and all 2D-SWE parameters (p < 0.001) were significantly different between benign and malignant FBLs. The BI-RADS score provided an AUC of 0.876 (95% CI 0.810-0.926) for the diagnosis of malignant FBLs. Among the 2D-SWE measurements, an excellent diagnostic performance was observed for Emax with an AUC of 0.915 (95% CI 0.856-0.956) and Emean of 0.908 (95% CI 0.847-0.951). Optimal cutoff for the diagnosis of malignant FBLs were US BI-RADS > 3, Strain Ratio > 2.52, Tsukuba Score > 3, Emax > 82.6 kPa, Emean > 66.0 kPa, Emin > 54.4 kPa and Eratio > 330.8. Multiparametric ultrasound, particularly SWE, can improve specificity in the characterization of FBLs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Shear wave elastography (SWE) is increasingly used in breast cancer diagnostics. However, large, prospective, multicenter data evaluating the reliability of SWE is missing. We evaluated the intra- and interobserver reliability of SWE in patients with breast lesions categorized as BIRADS 3 or 4. METHODS We used data of 1288 women at 12 institutions in 7 countries with breast lesions categorized as BIRADS 3 to 4 who underwent conventional B-mode ultrasound and SWE. 1243 (96.5%) women had three repetitive conventional B-mode ultrasounds as well as SWE measurements performed by a board-certified senior physician. 375 of 1288 (29.1%) women received an additional ultrasound examination with B-mode and SWE by a second physician. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated to examine intra- and interobserver reliability. RESULTS ICC for intraobserver reliability showed an excellent correlation with ICC >0.9, while interobserver reliability was moderate with ICC of 0.7. There were no clinically significant differences in intraobserver reliability when SWE was performed in lesions categorized as BI-RADS 3 or 4 as well as in histopathologically benign or malignant lesions. CONCLUSION Reliability of additional SWE was evaluated on a study cohort consisting of 1288 breast lesions categorized as BI-RADS 3 and 4. SWE shows an excellent intraobserver reliability and a moderate interobserver reliability in the evaluation of solid breast masses.

Abstract
Mammary gland tumours have a significant impact on the health of dogs, requiring diagnostic tools to support clinicians to develop appropriate therapeutic strategies. Sonoelastography is an emerging technology that is able to define the stiffness of the tissue and has promising applications in the evaluation of mammary gland lesions. In the present study, strain elastography (STE) and shear-wave (SWE) elastography were compared in 38 mammary nodular lesions for their ability to define the histopathological features of canine mammary lesions. Among the techniques, SWE showed better repeatability (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.876), whereas STE was found to be only acceptable (intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.456). Mammary nodular lesions showed a wide range of tissue stiffening with a similar mean value for STE and SWE in benign (4 ± 0.3 and 115.4 ± 12.6 kPa, respectively) and malignant lesions (3.8 ± 0.1 and 115.5 ± 4.5 kPa, respectively). A significant correlation was found between lesion fibrosis and STE (STE-I: r = 0.513, p < 0.001; STE-R: r = 0.591, p < 0.001) or SWE-S (r = 0.769; p < 0.001). In conclusion, SWE was reliable and correlated with fibrosis and was similar for both benign and malignant lesions, suggesting that other collateral diagnostic techniques should be considered in conjunction with SWE to characterize mammary nodular lesions in dogs.

Abstract
This study assessed the differences in muscle stiffness of the medial gastrocnemius (MG) and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles at rest and contraction during ovulation and follicular phase (menstruation) in women with regular menstrual cycle. Thirty-four young healthy women (mean age 21.3 ± 1.3 years) with regular menstrual cycles participated in this study. Stiffness of the TA and MG muscles at rest and voluntary contraction during ovulation and follicular phase in young women were measured using shear-wave elastography (SWE) and the handheld myotonometer MyotonPRO. The absolute stiffness difference between resting and contraction was expressed as the stiffness increase rate (SIR). The stiffness of the MG and TA at the resting position was not significantly different between the two phases of the menstrual cycle (p > .05). A significantly greater stiffness of both muscles measured using MyotonPRO in the follicular phase than during ovulation was found (p < .05), while stiffness measured by SWE showed a difference only in the TA muscle during contraction (p < .05). In addition, there were no significant differences in the SIR of both muscles between the two phases (p > .05). The results of our study showed a significantly greater stiffness of the MG and TA muscles at the follicular phase than at ovulation during contraction only. As muscle stiffness affects the risk of injury owing to reduced stability during sports activities, these changes in mechanical properties during the menstrual cycle should be noted, and training strategies should be used in female athletes. Abstract
In this paper, shear wave elastography was used to study and analyze the images of the breast in-depth and identify the abnormal image data. Sixty breast lesions were evaluated, and quantitative metrics were reproducible in the static and dynamic modes of shear wave elastography with a higher interobserver agreement in dynamic qualitative metrics than in the static mode. There were no statistically significant differences between the two modes of imaging in quantitative metrics, and quantitative metrics were more effective than qualitative metrics. Postoperative immunohistochemical expression of ER, PR, HER-2, Ki-67, molecular typing, pathological type, histological grading, and axillary lymph node status of breast cancer was obtained based on pathological results. The correlation between mass size, patient age, and WiMAX values of breast cancer masses was analyzed using Pearson correlation, and the differences in SWVmax values of breast cancer masses between different expressions of immunohistochemical parameters ER, PR, HER-2, Ki-67, and axillary lymph node status were compared using tests. The variables with correlations and differences were included in the multiple linear regression analysis to assess the factors influencing the SWVmax values. The performance of TDPM, SPM, and TSPM was compared using PVA body models with different freeze-thaw cycles. The results showed that TSPM performed better than SPM in general, and TDPM showed excellent performance because of high temporal resolution and low random error, especially when the number of freeze-thaw cycles increased and the hardness of the PVA body mold increased. Measurements at different depths of inhomogeneous body models also showed that the TDPM method was less affected by depth, and the results were more stable. Finally, the reliability of the shear wave velocity (SWS) measured by the TDPM and SPM methods was investigated using porcine ligament tissue, and the results showed that the mean values of SWS goodness of fit for TDPM and SPM were 0.94 and 0.87, respectively, and the estimated elastic modulus of TDPM was very close to the mechanical test results.

Abstract
PURPOSE Breast ultrasound (BUS) is one of the imaging modalities for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. However, the segmentation and classification of BUS images is a challenging task. In recent years, several methods for segmenting and classifying BUS images have been studied. These methods use BUS datasets for evaluation. In addition, semantic segmentation algorithms have gained prominence for segmenting medical images. METHODS In this paper, we examined different methods for segmenting and classifying BUS images. Popular datasets used to evaluate BUS images and semantic segmentation algorithms were examined. Several segmentation and classification papers were selected for analysis and review. Both conventional and semantic methods for BUS segmentation were reviewed. RESULTS Commonly used methods for BUS segmentation were depicted in a graphical representation, while other conventional methods for segmentation were equally elucidated. CONCLUSIONS We presented a review of the segmentation and classification methods for tumours detected in BUS images. This review paper selected old and recent studies on segmenting and classifying tumours in BUS images.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the role of ultrasound (US) in detecting and characterizing ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast and to investigate the correlation between ultrasonographic and biological features of DCIS. METHODS In total, 171 patients (mean age 44; range 39-62) with 178 lesions were retrospectively evaluated by two independent radiologists searching for US mass or non-mass lesions. Immunohistochemistry analysis was performed to determine estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression. The US detection rate and pattern distribution among the lesion types were evaluated. The χ2 test was used to evaluate the correlation between the US findings and the biological factors. Statistical significance was indicated by p values < 0.05. Inter-observer agreement was calculated by Kohen's k test. RESULTS US detected 35% (63/178) of all lesions. Fifty-two (83%) lesions were classified as mass lesions, and 11 (17%) as non-mass lesions (p < 0.0001). Among the mass lesions, the most common shape was irregular (79%; p < 0.0001), with 45 (87%) lesions having indistinct margins. Hypoechogenicity was the most common echo pattern (49 cases, 94%; p < 0.0001). Microcalcifications were found in 23 cases (37%; p = 0.004) and were associated with mass lesions in 15 cases (65%) and with non-mass lesions in 8 cases (35%) (p = 0.21). An almost perfect inter-observer agreement (k = 0.87) was obtained between the two radiologists. A significant ER expression was found in mass lesions (83%; p < 0.0001), with no significant PR (p = 0.89) or HER2 expression (p = 0.81). Among the lesions with microcalcifications, only 7 out of 23 cases (30%) were positive for HER2 (p = 0.09). CONCLUSION DCIS represents a heterogeneous pathological process with variable US appearance (mass-like, non-mass-like, or occult). The most common US finding is represented by mass-type, hypoechogenic lesions with indistinct margins. A significant ER expression exists among mass-type lesions, while microcalcifications seem not to be associated with HER2 expression.

Abstract
Breast capillary hemangioma is a rare benign vascular tumor. A 59-year-old asymptomatic woman underwent screening mammography and breast ultrasound. B-mode ultrasound revealed a lobulated, hypoechoic mass. Color Doppler ultrasound showed no intratumoral blood flow. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) revealed internal fast homogeneous contrast enhancement of the mass and persistent enhancement after 4 min. A 14-gauge core needle biopsy was then performed. The radiologic and pathologic appearances were concordant with breast capillary hemangioma. The ultrasonic manifestations of breast hemangioma may vary, and differentiation from other inflammatory diseases and malignancies is challenging. CEUS may help in observing the vascular characteristics of breast capillary hemangioma.
