The effects of internalized shame and self-blame on disordered eating and drive for muscularity in collegiate men

Cognitive restraint and body dissatisfaction are more strongly related to muscle building behaviors for men than women

Muscle building behaviors are an understudied eating disorder (ED) symptom increasing in prevalence, especially among men. However, little is known about the cognitive ED correlates that may underlie muscle building behaviors and whether these associations differ by gender. We examined associations between cognitive ED symptoms and muscle building behaviors, and whether these associations differ between men and women. In a sample of college students (N = 258), we investigated cross-sectional associations between two core cognitive ED symptoms, body dissatisfaction and cognitive restraint, with muscle building behaviors, and whether binary gender moderated these associations. Data were analyzed using two linear regression models in which muscle building behaviors was entered as the outcome variable. In Model 1, body dissatisfaction, BMI, gender, and the interaction term of body dissatisfaction by gender were entered as predictors. In Model 2, cognitive restraint, BMI, gender, and the interaction term of cognitive restraint by gender were entered as predictors. Results of Model 1 indicated that muscle building behaviors were significantly and independently associated with body dissatisfaction and gender and the association between muscle building and body dissatisfaction was stronger for men. Results of Model 2 indicated that muscle building behaviors were significantly and independently associated with cognitive restraint and gender and the association between muscle building and cognitive restraint was stronger for men. Findings suggest that cognitive restraint and body dissatisfaction may be important prevention and intervention targets for maladaptive muscle building behaviors, particularly among men.

The associations between autistic traits and disordered eating/drive for muscularity are independent of anxiety and depression in females but not males

Previous research has shown a positive correlation between autistic traits and eating disorder symptoms, and this relationship appears to be independent of co-occurring mental health status. The current study followed a pre-registered analysis plan with the aim to investigate a previously unconsidered factor in the relationship between autistic traits and disorders of eating and body image: the drive for muscularity. Participants (N = 1068) completed the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26) and Drive for Muscularity Scale (DMS). Positive correlations between AQ and EAT-26 and AQ and DMS were observed. In females, AQ remained significantly correlated with EAT-26 and DMS when controlling for co-occurring anxiety and depression symptoms, but this was not the case in males. These findings demonstrate the moderating role of sex, and the need to consider autistic traits in individuals diagnosed with, or at a heightened risk for, disorders of eating and body image.

Shame and eating disorders symptoms: A meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

Numerous empirical studies and theoretical models posit that shame is a common experience among individuals across the eating disorder spectrum. In this study we aim to investigate the association between shame and eating disorders symptoms using a meta-analytical approach.

METHOD

In this meta-analysis, we synthesized findings from 195 studies to examine the proposed association between shame and eating disorders symptoms. We looked at the associations with both general eating disorders symptoms and with specific eating disorders symptoms (i.e., anorexic, bulimic, and binge-eating symptoms). Moderation analyses testing for the effect of type of shame, type of eating symptoms, clinical status, quality of the study, age, and gender were conducted.

RESULTS

Shame was significantly associated with a medium to large effect size with all types of eating disorders symptoms (rs between .40 and .52). Body shame (r = .55) and shame around eating (r = .59) were more strongly related with eating disorders pathology. Type of eating disorders symptoms did not moderate the relationship between shame and disturbed eating.

DISCUSSION

Overall, the magnitude of the effect size of the association between shame and eating disorders symptoms is a medium to large one. Body shame and shame around eating seem to be the types of shame most closely tied with eating disorders symptoms, suggesting that directly targeting them in interventions might be highly beneficial. Findings highlight current gaps in the literature (e.g., mostly correlational studies, low quality studies) with implications for future research.

The differential associations of shame and guilt with eating disorder behaviors

Negative affect increases in the hours prior to binge eating (BE), suggesting individuals may use BE to attempt to alleviate experiences of aversive self-awareness, such as shame and guilt. Guilt involves feeling bad about ones behavior and may elicit reparative actions; shame involves feeling bad about oneself and is generally associated with maladaptive behavior. Distinguishing how shame and guilt differentially relate to specific eating disorder (ED) behaviors may inform our understanding of emotional antecedents of ED behaviors and lead to refined treatment and prevention targets. We aimed to distinguish shame and guilt as they relate to BE and self-induced vomiting (SIV). We hypothesized that: (a) shame-proneness and state shame would be uniquely associated with BE, as BE may be used to escape from experiences of shame, and (b) guilt-proneness and state guilt would be positively associated with SIV among individuals who binge eat, as SIV may be used as a reparative action for BE. Participants (N = 347) completed self-report measures assessing guilt, shame, and ED behaviors. Shame-proneness and state shame were uniquely associated with BE and the urge to binge eat, while guilt-proneness and state guilt were not. Contrary to our hypothesis, guilt-proneness and state guilt were not associated with SIV among those who binge eat or endorsed urges to binge eat. These findings suggest that shame and guilt are differentially related to ED behaviors and identify shame specifically as an emotion that may elicit BE. Future research is needed to identify temporal relations between shame and ED behaviors.
