Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic affected various dietary and lifestyle behaviors. Understanding the relationship between physical activity, screen time, and beverage consumption is critical to identify at-risk populations, particularly individuals with chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), for targeted intervention strategies. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between physical activity, screen time behavior patterns, and non-alcoholic beverage consumption among participants in ELSA-Brasil during the COVID supplementary study. METHODS The study was conducted in five of the six ELSA-Brasil research centers, from July 2020 to March 2021. Sociodemographic variables, physical activity, screen time, non-alcoholic beverage consumption, and lifestyle factors were analyzed using bivariate analyses and binary logistic regression models. RESULTS The total sample consisted of 4,442 participants with a mean age of 62.0 ± 8.6 years. Significant gender differences were found in sociodemographic and lifestyle variables, influencing beverage consumption patterns. Participants with excessive screen time and physical inactivity were more likely to consume sugar-sweetened beverages. Specifically, men exhibited a significant association with an odds ratio of 2.44 (95%CI: 1.54-3.84), while women had an odds ratio of 1.72 (95% CI: 1.02-2.91). Men with appropriate screen time but physically inactive behavior had nearly double the likelihood of consuming sugar-sweetened artificial beverages. Additionally, men with excessive screen time and physical inactivity had higher consumption of industrialized juices (OR: 1.93; 95% CI: 1.22-3.06), while women were more likely to consume soft drinks (OR: 2.28; 95%CI 1.10-4.72). CONCLUSION These findings underscore the importance of addressing both screen time and physical activity in public health initiatives, through gender-specific approaches that account for socioeconomic disparities when prioritizing interventions.

Abstract
AIMS Numerous studies report positive associations between total carbohydrate (CHO) intake and incident metabolic syndrome (MetS), but few differentiate quality or type of CHO relative to MetS. We examined source of CHO intake, including added sugar (AS), AS-rich CHO foods, and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) associated with incident MetS in adults enrolled in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. METHODS AND RESULTS Among 3154 Black American and White American women and men aged 18-30 years at baseline, dietary intake was assessed by diet history three times over 20 years. Sources of AS-rich CHO foods and beverages include sugar-rich refined grain products, candy, sugar products, and SSBs. Incident MetS was created according to standard criteria. Time-dependent Cox proportional hazards regression analysis evaluated the associations of incident MetS across quintiles of cumulative intakes of AS-rich CHO foods and beverages, AS, and SSBs adjusted for potential confounding factors over 30 years of follow-up. The associations of AS-rich CHO foods and beverages, AS, and SSB intakes with incident MetS were consistent. Compared with the lowest intake, the greatest intakes of AS-rich CHOs, AS, and SSBs were associated with 59% (Ptrend < 0.001), 44% (Ptrend = 0.01), and 34% (Ptrend = 0.03) higher risk of developing MetS, respectively. As expected, diet quality was lower across increasing quintiles of AS-rich CHO foods and beverages, AS, and SSBs (all Ptrend < 0.001). CONCLUSION Our study findings are consistent with an elevated risk of developing MetS with greater consumption of AS, AS-rich CHO foods, and SSBs, which support consuming fewer AS-rich CHO foods and SSBs.

Abstract
AIMS The epidemiological evidence regarding the impact of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) on the risk of cardio-cerebrovascular diseases (CCVDs) is controversial. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to examine the association between UPF consumption and the risk of CCVDs within cohort studies. DATA SYNTHESIS A systematic literature search was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed/Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library databases, covering the inception of these databases up until January 1st, 2023. A total of 39 cohort studies involving 63,573,312 human participants were deemed eligible according to the inclusion criteria. Utilizing random-effects models, risk ratios (RRs) were estimated to determine the pooled results. Our findings indicate a significant association between a higher consumption of UPF and an increased likelihood of CCVDs (RR: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.01-1.16, I2 = 89%; p < 0.01) compared to individuals who either abstain from or consume lesser amounts of UPF. Nonlinear dose-response meta-analyses showed that a consistent high intake of UPFs was associated with an elevated risk of developing CCVDs (p non-linearity <0.001). Notably, the risk of CCVDs escalated by approximately 7% with an UPF intake of up to 1 serving per day. Subgroup analysis further revealed a significant augmentation in the risk of total CVD and hypertension with increased UPF consumption. CONCLUSIONS A higher intake of UPF significantly increases the risk of developing CCVDs. Prospective studies controlling for confounding factors are needed to validate the relationship between UPF intake and the development of CCVDs.

Abstract
IntroductionSugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) intake is associated with an increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases. However, evidence regarding associations of artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs) and fruit juices with cardiometabolic diseases is mixed. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between the SSB, ASB and fruit juice consumption with the incidence of cardiometabolic conditions and mortality.MethodsRelevant prospective studies were identified by searching PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library until December 2022 without language restrictions. The pooled relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated for the association of SSBs, ASBs, and fruit juices with the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and mortality by using random-effect models.ResultsA total of 72 articles were included in this meta-analysis study. Significantly positive associations were observed between the consumption of individual beverages and T2D risk (RR: 1.27; 95% CI: 1.17, 1.38 for SSBs; RR: 1.32; 95% CI: 1.11, 1.56 for ASBs; and RR:0.98; 95% CI: 0.93, 1.03 for fruit juices). Moreover, our findings showed that intakes of SSBs and ASBs were significantly associated with risk of hypertension, stroke, and all-cause mortality (RR ranging from 1.08 to 1.54; all p < 0.05). A dose-response meta-analysis showed monotonic associations between SSB intake and hypertension, T2D, coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and mortality, and the linear association was only significant between ASB consumption and hypertension risk. Higher SSB and ASB consumptions were associated with a greater risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases and mortality. Fruit juice intake was associated with a higher risk of T2D.ConclusionTherefore, our findings suggest that neither ASBs nor fruit juices could be considered as healthier beverages alternative to SSBs for achieving improved health.Systematic Review Registration: [PROSPERO], identifier [No. CRD42022307003].
