2D Materials Boost Advanced Zn Anodes: Principles, Advances, and Challenges

3D Hierarchical Sunflower-Shaped MoS2/SnO2 Photocathodes for Photo-Rechargeable Zinc Ion Batteries

Photo-rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (PRZIBs) have attracted much attention in the field of energy storage due to their high safety and dexterity compared with currently integrated lithium-ion batteries and solar cells. However, challenges remain toward their practical applications, originating from the unsatisfactory structural design of photocathodes, which results in low photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE). Herein, a flexible MoS2/SnO2-based photocathode is developed via constructing a sunflower-shaped light-trapping nanostructure with 3D hierarchical and self-supporting properties, enabled by the hierarchical embellishment of MoS2 nanosheets and SnO2 quantum dots on carbon cloth (MoS2/SnO2 QDs@CC). This structural design provides a favorable pathway for the effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and the efficient storage of Zn2+ on photocathodes. Consequently, the PRZIB assembled with MoS2/SnO2 QDs@CC delivers a desirable capacity of 366 mAh g-1 under a light intensity of 100 mW cm-2, and achieves an ultra-high PCE of 2.7% at a current density of 0.125 mA cm-2. In practice, an integrated battery system consisting of four series-connected quasi-solid-state PRZIBs is successfully applied as a wearable wristband of smartwatches, which opens a new door for the application of PRZIBs in next-generation flexible energy storage devices.

Polymer Coating with Balanced Coordination Strength and Ion Conductivity for Dendrite-Free Zinc Anode

Decorating Zn anodes with functionalized polymers is considered as an effective strategy to inhibit dendrite growth. However, this normally brings extra interfacial resistance rendering slow reaction kinetics of Zn2+ . Herein, a poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) coating with modulated coordination strength and ion conductivity for dendrite-free Zn anode is reported. The P2VP coating favors a high electrolyte wettability and rapid Zn2+ migration speed (Zn2+ transfer number, tZn 2+ = 0.58). Electrostatic potential calculation shows that P2VP mildly coordinates with Zn2+ (adsorption energy = -0.94 eV), which promotes a preferential deposition of Zn along the (002) crystal plane. Notably, the use of partially (26%) quaternized P2VP (q-P2VP) further reduces the interfacial resistance to 126 Ω, leading to a high ion migration speed (tZn 2+ = 0.78) and a considerably low nucleation overpotential (18 mV). As a result of the synergistic effect of mild coordination and partial electrolysis, the overpotential of the q-P2VP-decorated Zn anode retains at a considerably low level (≈46 mV) over 1000 h at a high current density of 10 mA cm-2 . The assembled (NH4 )2 V6 O16 ·1.5H2 O || glass fiber || q-P2VP-Zn full cell reveals a lower average capacity decay rate of only 0.018% per cycle within 500 cycles at 1 A g-1 .

Utilization of 2D materials in aqueous zinc ion batteries for safe energy storage devices

Aqueous rechargeable battery has been an intense topic of research recently due to the significant safety issues of conventional Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Amongst the various candidates of aqueous batteries, aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) hold great promise as a next generation safe energy storage device due to its low cost, abundance in nature, low toxicity, environmental friendliness, low redox potential, and high theoretical capacity. Yet, the promise has not been realized due to their limitations, such as lower capacity compared to traditional LIB, dendrite growth, detrimental degradation of electrode materials structure as ions intercalate/de-intercalate, and gas evolution/corrosion at the electrodes, which remains a significant challenge. To address the challenges, various 2D materials with different physiochemical characteristics have been utilized. This review explores fundamental physiochemical characteristics of widely used 2D materials in AZIBs, including graphene, MoS2, MXenes, 2D metal organic framework, 2D covalent organic framework, and 2D transition metal oxides, and how their characteristics have been utilized or modified to address the challenges in AZIBs. The review also provides insights and perspectives on how 2D materials can help to realize the full potential of AZIBs for next-generation safe and reliable energy storage devices.

Laboratory X-ray computed tomography imaging protocol allowing the operando investigation of electrode material evolution in various environments

A robust imaging protocol utilizing laboratory XCT is presented. Hybrid 2D/3D imaging at different scales with real-time monitoring allowed to assess, in operation, the evolution of zinc electrodes within three environments, namely alkaline, near-neutral, and mildly acidic. Different combinations of currents were used to demonstrate various scenarios exhibiting both dendritic and smooth deposition of active material. Directly from radiograms, the volume of the electrode and therefore its growth/dissolution rate was estimated and compared against tomographic reconstructions and theoretical values. The protocol combines simplistic cell design with multiple three-dimensional and two-dimensional acquisitions at different magnifications, providing a unique insight into electrode's morphology evolution within various environments.

Progress and Prospect of Zn Anode Modification in Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries: Experimental and Theoretical Aspects

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs), the favorite of next-generation energy storage devices, are popular among researchers owing to their environmental friendliness, low cost, and safety. However, AZIBs still face problems of low cathode capacity, fast attenuation, slow ion migration rate, and irregular dendrite growth on anodes. In recent years, many researchers have focused on Zn anode modification to restrain dendrite growth. This review introduces the energy storage mechanism and current challenges of AZIBs, and then some modifying strategies for zinc anodes are elucidated from the perspectives of experiments and theoretical calculations. From the experimental point of view, the modification strategy is mainly to construct a dense artificial interface layer or porous framework on the anode surface, with some research teams directly using zinc alloys as anodes. On the other hand, theoretical research is mainly based on adsorption energy, differential charge density, and molecular dynamics. Finally, this paper summarizes the research progress on AZIBs and puts forward some prospects.
