From Ties to Events in the Analysis of Interorganizational Exchange Relations

Relational event models expand the analytical possibilities of existing statistical models for interorganizational networks by: (i) making efficient use of information contained in the sequential ordering of observed events connecting sending and receiving units; (ii) accounting for the intensity of the relation between exchange partners, and (iii) distinguishing between short- and long-term network effects. We introduce a recently developed relational event model (REM) for the analysis of continuously observed interorganizational exchange relations. The combination of efficient sampling algorithms and sender-based stratification makes the models that we present particularly useful for the analysis of very large samples of relational event data generated by interaction among heterogeneous actors. We demonstrate the empirical value of event-oriented network models in two different settings for interorganizational exchange relations-that is, high-frequency overnight transactions among European banks and patient-sharing relations within a community of Italian hospitals. We focus on patterns of direct and generalized reciprocity while accounting for more complex forms of dependence present in the data. Empirical results suggest that distinguishing between degree- and intensity-based network effects, and between short- and long-term effects is crucial to our understanding of the dynamics of interorganizational dependence and exchange relations. We discuss the general implications of these results for the analysis of social interaction data routinely collected in organizational research to examine the evolutionary dynamics of social networks within and between organizations.

Individual-driven versus interaction-driven burstiness in human dynamics: The case of Wikipedia edit history

The origin of non-Poissonian or bursty temporal patterns observed in various data sets for human social dynamics has been extensively studied, yet its understanding still remains incomplete. Considering the fact that humans are social beings, a fundamental question arises: Is the bursty human dynamics dominated by individual characteristics or by interaction between individuals? In this paper we address this question by analyzing the Wikipedia edit history to see how spontaneous individual editors are in initiating bursty periods of editing, i.e., individual-driven burstiness, and to what extent such editors' behaviors are driven by interaction with other editors in those periods, i.e., interaction-driven burstiness. We quantify the degree of initiative (DoI) of an editor of interest in each Wikipedia article by using the statistics of bursty periods containing the editor's edits. The integrated value of the DoI over all relevant timescales reveals which is dominant between individual-driven and interaction-driven burstiness. We empirically find that this value tends to be larger for weaker temporal correlations in the editor's editing behavior and/or stronger editorial correlations. These empirical findings are successfully confirmed by deriving an analytic form of the DoI from a model capturing the essential features of the edit sequence. Thus our approach provides a deeper insight into the origin and underlying mechanisms of bursts in human social dynamics.

A Semantic Focused Web Crawler Based on a Knowledge Representation Schema

The Web has become the main source of information in the digital world, expanding to heterogeneous domains and continuously growing. By means of a search engine, users can systematically search over the web for particular information based on a text query, on the basis of a domain-unaware web search tool that maintains real-time information. One type of web search tool is the semantic focused web crawler (SFWC); it exploits the semantics of the Web based on some ontology heuristics to determine which web pages belong to the domain defined by the query. An SFWC is highly dependent on the ontological resource, which is created by domain human experts. This work presents a novel SFWC based on a generic knowledge representation schema to model the crawler’s domain, thus reducing the complexity and cost of constructing a more formal representation as the case when using ontologies. Furthermore, a similarity measure based on the combination of the inverse document frequency (IDF) metric, standard deviation, and the arithmetic mean is proposed for the SFWC. This measure filters web page contents in accordance with the domain of interest during the crawling task. A set of experiments were run over the domains of computer science, politics, and diabetes to validate and evaluate the proposed novel crawler. The quantitative (harvest ratio) and qualitative (Fleiss’ kappa) evaluations demonstrate the suitability of the proposed SFWC to crawl the Web using a knowledge representation schema instead of a domain ontology.

Co-destruction Patterns in Crowdsourcing

Crowdsourcing has been a successful paradigm in organising a large number of actors to work on specific tasks and contribute to knowledge collectively. However, the openness of such systems allows destructive patterns to form through actors’ dynamics. As a result, the collective effort of actors may not achieve the targeted objective due to lower engagement and lower quality contributions. There are varying forms of actor dynamics that can lead to suboptimal outcomes and this paper provides a systematic analysis of these in the form of a collection of patterns, derived from both the literature and from our own experiences with crowdsourcing systems. This collection of so-called co-destruction patterns allows for an-depth analysis of corwdsourcing systems which can benefit a comparative analysis and also assist with improvements of existing systems or the set-up of new ones. A survey reveals that these patterns have been observed in practice and are perceived as worthwhile addressing.

Talent and experience shape competitive social hierarchies

The hierarchy of social organization is a ubiquitous property of animal and human groups, linked to resource allocation, collective decisions, individual health, and even to social instability. Experimental evidence shows that both the intrinsic abilities of individuals and social reinforcement processes impact hierarchies; existing mathematical models, however, focus on the latter. Here, we develop a rigorous model that incorporates both features and explore their synergistic effect on stability and the structure of hierarchy. For pairwise interactions, we show that there is a trade-off between relationship stability and having the most talented individuals in the highest ranks. Extending this to open societies, where individuals enter and leave the population, we show that important societal effects arise from the interaction between talent and social processes: (i) Despite a positive global correlation between talent and rank, paradoxically, local correlation is negative, and (ii) the removal of an individual can induce a series of rank reversals. We show that the mechanism underlying the latter is the removal of an older individual of limited talent, who nonetheless was able to suppress the rise of younger, more talented individuals.
