Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vocal symptoms are frequent in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and may occur during or after infection. OBJECTIVE To conduct a descriptive review on the topic "dysphonia and COVID-19" in order to alert specialists to these symptoms associated with the virus and sequelae. METHODOLOGY A literature review was carried out in the main databases: Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus, between April 2020 and April 2024 using descriptors that related COVID-19 or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2) to voice disorders. RESULTS In total, 41 studies, 13 case reports, 6 retrospective, and 22 prospective, 5139 patients (2131 M, 2991 F), mean age of 51 years. The prevalence of dysphonia ranged from 0.39% to 79%. The most prevalent vocal symptoms were hoarseness, cough, dry throat, sore throat, reflux, aphonia, phonasthenia, stridor, and hypersecretion. Videolaryngoscopic findings: unilateral paralysis (145), bilateral paralysis (16), erythema (84), benign lesions (56), muscle tension dysphonia (54), granulomas (33), edema (31), stenosis (22), atrophy (19), incomplete glottal closure (12), and ventricular hypertrophy (6). Auditory-perceptual analyses identified mild/moderate vocal impairment in infected patients and persistence of changes in the long-COVID period. Acoustic analyses indicated significant changes in Jitter, Shimmer, harmonic-to-noise ratio (NHR), and maximum phonation time in patients with COVID-19. CONCLUSION Dysphonia caused by COVID-19 infection is common, both in the acute and chronic phases of the disease. The main causes include vocal fold paralysis, inflammatory laryngitis, and muscle tension dysphonia. All patients who present vocal symptoms after COVID-19 infection should undergo videolaryngoscopy and subjective and acoustic vocal analyses to identify sequelae of the disease.

Abstract
Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that often causes vocal cord paralysis (VCP), Parkinsonism, cerebellar ataxia, and autonomic dysfunction. VCP is the most fatal symptom that affects the prognosis of patients with MSA. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is often associated with neurological complications and it has recently been reported to induce VCP in patients without neurodegenerative diseases. We herein present two cases of patients with MSA in whom VCP worsened after COVID-19 and this led to the need to perform emergency tracheostomies. As VCP may deteriorate after COVID-19 in patients with MSA, it is important to prevent COVID-19 in these patients and closely monitor such patients for any signs of VCP deterioration post-infection to improve their prognosis.

Abstract
Bilateral vocal cord paralysis can cause obstruction of glottic airflow, resulting in respiratory distress and the need for a surgical airway. We report a case of acute onset bilateral vocal cord paralysis in a healthy adolescent patient 9 days after a mild severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. This 15-year-old patient presented with dyspnea, tachypnea, and stridor. A fiberoptic laryngoscopy revealed bilateral vocal fold paralysis with limited vocal cord abduction causing respiratory distress. A detailed set of diagnostic test results, including blood work, imaging, and a lumbar puncture, were all negative other than her new onset diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The patient underwent tracheostomy placement with the subsequent resolution of her symptoms. Her vocal cord function remains impaired, and the patient continues to be tracheostomy-dependent 13 months after the initial presentation. SARS-CoV-2 infection has multiple well-established neurologic complications in children. The current case suggests that vocal cord paralysis may be an additional neuropathic sequela of the virus. Vocal cord pathology should be an important consideration when constructing a differential for children presenting with voice, swallowing, or breathing complaints after SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract
Background SARS-CoV-2 infection has many manifestations, including otolaryngological symptoms. Case presentation A 60-year-old man with severe dyspnea underwent endotracheal intubation followed by 68 h of mechanical ventilation. After extubation, he left the ICU without any significant complications. Four days after the extubation, he developed dyspnea, which deteriorated the next 2 days, and stridor became evident. A fiberoptic laryngoscope revealed bilateral vocal cord edema and paralysis, which required an emergency airway. We decided to perform an awake tracheostomy under local anesthesia while considering protection for airborne infection to healthcare providers. The tracheostomy was closed when the edema and paralysis of the vocal cords were ameliorated. Conclusions A COVID-19 patient who underwent injurious ventilation developed vocal cord paralysis and edema 6 days after extubation, leading to an emergency tracheostomy. Close attention to the upper airway of COVID-19 patients is essential since the pathophysiology of the present incident may be specific to the viral infection.

Abstract
RATIONALE Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes long-term pulmonary sequelae in adults, but little is known about pulmonary outcomes in pediatrics. OBJECTIVE(S) The aim of this study was to describe long-term subjective and objective pulmonary abnormalities after SARS-CoV-2 infection in pediatric populations. METHODS Single-center, retrospective cohort of patients seen in post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pulmonary clinic in 2021. Subjects evaluated had persistent pulmonary symptoms 4 weeks or more after initial infection. Clinical testing included a 6-min walk test (6MWT), chest X-ray, pre- and postbronchodilator spirometry, plethysmography, and diffusion capacity. Patients were followed 2-to-3-months after the initial visit with repeat testing. The primary outcome was the presence of abnormal pulmonary function testing. Secondary measures included variables associated with pulmonary outcomes. RESULTS Eighty-two adolescents were seen at a median of 3.5 months postinfection, with approximately 80% reporting two or more symptoms at clinic presentation (cough, chest pain, dyspnea at rest, and exertional dyspnea). At follow-up (~6.5 months) exertional dyspnea persisted for most (67%). Spirometry was normal in 77% of patients, but 31% had a positive bronchodilator response. No abnormalities were noted on plethysmography or diffusion capacity. Clinical phenotypes identified included inhaled corticosteroid responsiveness, paradoxical vocal fold motion disorder, deconditioning, and dysautonomia. Multivariable modeling demonstrated that obesity, anxiety, and resting dyspnea were associated with reduced 6MWT, while female sex and resting dyspnea were associated with higher Borg Dyspnea and Fatigues scores. CONCLUSIONS This is the largest study to date of pediatric patients with long-term pulmonary sequelae post-COVID-19. Identified clinical phenotypes and risk factors warrant further study and treatment.

Abstract
The cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) typically present with pulmonary and upper respiratory tract symptoms, but may also present with neurologic complications. Because severe cases are often intubated or ventilated, there are some reports of vocal cord palsy associated with intubation; however, there are few reports of recurrent nerve palsy without intubation management. We experienced a case of left vocal cord palsy following COVID-19 in a healthy young male patient with no previous medical history. The patient became aware of hoarseness symptoms three days after he was found to be COVID-19 positive, and an endoscopic examination of the larynx revealed left vocal cord palsy. Since the patient had no previous medical history and there were no lesions that could cause recurrent nerve palsy on neck-thorax imaging, it was considered likely that the patient had unilateral recurrent nerve palsy due to acute inflammation caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Medication was started and his hoarseness became relieved. In vocal cord palsy occurring after COVID-19 illness, it is necessary to consider the presence of both vocal cord palsy related to tracheal intubation and recurrent nerve palsy associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has shown with certainty that SARS-CoV-2 can cause a variety of clinical findings, with some of the most notable being lasting chemosensory changes. Severe infections with SARS-CoV-2 can also lead to a variety of complications. For example, vocal cord paralysis can be caused by trauma sustained during intubation, which is a necessary procedure for many severe cases. Rarely, SARS-CoV-2 related vocal cord paralysis has occurred outside the context of intubation. These cases contribute to an emerging assortment of evidence supporting the neuropathic capacity of SARS-CoV-2. This report documents a case of COVID-19 related vocal cord paralysis in an 18-year-old female. The patient had a significant history of muscle tension dysphonia, chronic laryngitis, and vocal cord nodules. The patient developed vocal cord paralysis concurrently with the onset of mild viral symptoms and was never intubated or hospitalized. Based on the onset of symptoms and other causes being excluded with CT, a diagnosis of COVID-19-related vocal cord paralysis was performed.
