Composite biomediated engineering approaches for improving problematic soils: Potentials and opportunities

Several conventional chemical stabilizers are used for soil stabilization, among which cement is widely adopted. However, the high energy consumption and environmental challenges associated with these stabilizers have necessitated the transition toward the adoption/deployment of eco-friendly approaches for soil stabilization. Biomediated techniques are sustainable soil improvement methods adopting less toxic microorganisms, enzymes, or polymers for cementing soil. However, these processes also have several drawbacks, such as slow hardening, environmental impact, high cost, and lack of compatibility with different types of soils. It is hypothesized that these limitations may be overcome by exploring the prospects and opportunities offered by hybrid technological approaches involving the integration of nontraditional stabilizers and microbial-induced biomineralization processes for improving problematic soils. This paper discusses selected previous studies integrating different technologies and their benefits and challenges. The emerging fungi-based bio-mediation techniques and the possibility of forming sustainable fungal-based biocomposites to improve problematic soils are also highlighted.

Strength Predictive Modelling of Soils Treated with Calcium-Based Additives Blended with Eco-Friendly Pozzolans—A Machine Learning Approach

The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of a stabilised soil is a major mechanical parameter in understanding and developing geomechanical models, and it can be estimated directly by either lab testing of retrieved core samples or remoulded samples. However, due to the effort, high cost and time associated with these methods, there is a need to develop a new technique for predicting UCS values in real time. An artificial intelligence paradigm of machine learning (ML) using the gradient boosting (GB) technique is applied in this study to model the unconfined compressive strength of soils stabilised by cementitious additive-enriched agro-based pozzolans. Both ML regression and multinomial classification of the UCS of the stabilised mix are investigated. Rigorous sensitivity-driven diagnostic testing is also performed to validate and provide an understanding of the intricacies of the decisions made by the algorithm. Results indicate that the well-tuned and optimised GB algorithm has a very high capacity to distinguish between positive and negative UCS categories (‘firm’, ‘very stiff’ and ‘hard’). An overall accuracy of 0.920, weighted recall rates and precision scores of 0.920 and 0.938, respectively, were produced by the GB model. Multiclass prediction in this regard shows that only 12.5% of misclassified instances was achieved. When applied to a regression problem, a coefficient of determination of approximately 0.900 and a mean error of about 0.335 were obtained, thus lending further credence to the high performance of the GB algorithm used. Finally, among the eight input features utilised as independent variables, the additives seemed to exhibit the strongest influence on the ML predictive modelling.

Micro-mechanical performance evaluation of expansive soil biotreated with indigenous bacteria using MICP method

This study explored the effect of indigenous bacteria present in the soil to stabilized swelling behavior and improving the mechanical property of expansive soil. The objective of the research is to investigate the effectiveness of the biostimulation microbial induced calcite precipitation (MICP) for controlling the swelling-shrinkage behavior and improving shear strength of expansive soil. An attempt was made to develop an effective procedure to culture the indigenous bacteria for treating clays with varying plasticity and improve their engineering behavior. The detailed procedure has been investigated to effectively apply the MICP technique in clay soil, considering its low permeable nature. The applicability of biostimulation to clayey soils in minimizing their swelling potential and improving the strength is assessed. Both macroscale and microscale studies were conducted on untreated and biostimulated soils to observe changes in plasticity, strength, swelling, mineralogical, chemical characteristics. The present method has shown an effective alternative to improve the road pavement subgrade without affecting the eco-system of natural soil. The method investigated the effective way of providing the enrichment and cementation solution in clayey soil, which is the major concern in current literature. The study confirms that the calcite content has been increased with biostimulated MICP treatment up to 205% in the treated specimens and which future increased the unconfined compressive strength and split tensile strength. A reduction in the swelling pressure and swell strain is also observed. The results show that a cost-effect and eco-friendly method can be deployed for stabilizing the road pavement subgrades. The statistical assessment using multivariate analysis and hierarchical clustering dendrogram has been carried out to investigate the effect of the MICP treatment protocol on different soil and engineering parameters.
