Trait Intolerance of Uncertainty Is Associated with Decreased Reappraisal Capacity and Increased Suppression Tendency

The association between intolerance of uncertainty and depressive symptoms during COVID-19 in New York, USA

BACKGROUND

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), a highly contagious respiratory illnesses, has globally impacted mental health. This study aims to investigate the association between intolerance of uncertainty and depressive symptoms during the pandemic in New York, USA, considering COVID-19-related worries as modifiers and mediators.

METHOD

1227 participants from three ongoing cohort studies, originally centered on trauma-exposed children and adolescents, provided data via questionnaires and telephone interviews across three waves. We used multivariable logistic and linear regression models to investigate the intolerance of uncertainty-depressive symptoms relationship, while adjusting for potential confounders and assessing the modification and mediation effects of Covid-19 related worries.

RESULTS

Depressive symptoms prevalence was 18 %, 12 %, and 9 % at waves 0, 1, and 2 respectively. Strong positive associations were observed between intolerance of uncertainty above the median and depressive symptoms which remained significant after adjusting for potential confounders. Odds ratios were 2.14 (95 % CI: 1.54-2.99) and 4.50 (95 % CI: 2.67-7.93) for intolerance of uncertainty-depressive symptoms association at wave 0 and 1 respectively, and 3.22 (95 % CI: 1.68-6.63) for intolerance of uncertainty at wave 1 and depressive symptoms at wave 2. There was evidence of partial mediation by worries (12-37 %), but no evidence of a moderating effect.

CONCLUSION

The findings emphasize the importance of evidence-based strategies for tackling intolerance of uncertainty during pandemics, particularly in managing long COVID. Collaborative efforts between policymakers and clinicians are essential in this endeavor.

Habitual Expressive Suppression of Positive, but not Negative, Emotions Consistently Predicts Lower Well-being across Two Culturally Distinct Regions

Habitual expressive suppression (i.e., a tendency to inhibit the outward display of one's emotions; hereafter suppression) is often conceptualized as a maladaptive emotion regulation strategy. Yet, is this equally true for suppression of positive and of negative emotions? Across three studies and seven samples (total N > 1300 people) collected in two culturally distinct regions (i.e., Taiwan and the US), we examined the separability and distinct well-being effects of suppressing positive vs. negative emotions. Results consistently showed that (a) people suppressed their positive (vs. negative) emotions less, (b) the construct of suppression of positive (vs. negative) emotions was conceptually farther away from that of suppression of emotions in general, (c) suppression of positive and of negative emotions were only moderately correlated, and (d) only suppression of positive, but not negative, emotions, predicted lower well-being. An internal meta-analysis (k = 52 effect sizes) showed that these associations were robust to the inclusion of age, gender, and region as covariates. Future research may further probe the respective links between suppression of positive and of negative emotions and well-being across more cultural regions and across the life-span.

Targeting intolerance of uncertainty in treatment: A meta-analysis of therapeutic effects, treatment moderators, and underlying mechanisms

OBJECTIVE

Anxiety-related disorders are among the most prevalent psychiatric conditions and cause significant impairment. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) contributes to the emergence, maintenance, and symptom severity of anxiety-related disorders, yet information regarding treatment-related changes in IU is limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the efficacy of evidence-based treatments for anxiety-related disorders on IU, explored factors moderating treatment effects of IU, and examined whether therapeutic improvement in IU corresponded with improvements in anxiety symptom severity.

METHODS

PubMED and PsycINFO were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using the terms "intolerance of uncertainty" AND "treatment" OR "therapy." Data for pre and post-treatment measures and patient, intervention, and trial-level characteristics were extracted from 28 RCTs. Separate random effects models examined the treatment efficacy of interventions on IU and symptom severity. Moderators of therapeutic effects were analyzed via method-of-moments meta-regression or an analog to the analysis of variance.

RESULTS

Across RCTs, interventions exhibited a large therapeutic effect on IU compared to control conditions (g = 0.89). Treatment effects on IU positively corresponded with improved symptom severity and accounted for 36 % of the variance. Interestingly, comorbid depression and certain treatment approaches were associated with larger improvements in IU.

CONCLUSION

Evidence-based treatments are effective in improving IU, highlighting the importance of IU in the treatment of anxiety-related disorders. Moderator analyses identified patient and intervention-level factors to inform approaches to improve therapeutic effects on IU. Future research is needed to optimize interventions targeting IU and evaluate long-term efficacy of interventions on IU for anxiety-related disorders.

Interplay between uncertainty intolerance, emotion regulation, cognitive flexibility, and psychopathology during the COVID-19 pandemic: a multi-wave study

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a significant mental health burden on the global population. Studies during the pandemic have shown that risk factors such as intolerance of uncertainty and maladaptive emotion regulation are associated with increased psychopathology. Meanwhile, protective factors such as cognitive control and cognitive flexibility have been shown to protect mental health during the pandemic. However, the potential pathways through which these risk and protective factors function to impact mental health during the pandemic remain unclear. In the present multi-wave study, 304 individuals (18 years or older, 191 Males), residing in the USA during data collection, completed weekly online assessments of validated questionnaires across a period of five weeks (27th March 2020-1st May 2020). Mediation analyses revealed that longitudinal changes in emotion regulation difficulties mediated the effect of increases in intolerance of uncertainty on increases in stress, depression, and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, individual differences in cognitive control and flexibility moderated the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and emotion regulation difficulties. While intolerance of uncertainty and emotion regulation difficulties emerged as risk factors for mental health, cognitive control and flexibility seems to protect against the negative effects of the pandemic and promote stress resilience. Interventions aimed at enhancing cognitive control and flexibility might promote the protection of mental health in similar global crises in the future.

Intolerance of Uncertainty and Emotional Processing in Adolescence: Separating Between-Person Stability and Within-Person Change

Previous research on the relation between Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) and Emotional Processing (EP) during adolescence is limited. The present study aimed to clarify how IU and EP evolve over time, to what extent they are related, and whether changes in one precede or follow changes in the other. A total of 457 Italian adolescents (53.1% girls) aged 11 to 18 years (M = 14.1 ± 2.27) completed the IU and EP scales on three separate occasions three months apart (T1, T2, and T3). Data were modeled using a Random-Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM) that separates individual differences between individuals from intraindividual changes. Descriptive analyses showed that IU was relatively stable between T1 and T2 and decreased slightly between T2 and T3. Consistent with the view that emotion regulation improves as adolescents develop, EP difficulties were found to decrease between T1 and T2 and between T2 and T3. The RI-CLPM revealed a strong between-person effect, showing that individual differences in IU and EP remained consistent throughout the study. In addition, significant within-person change was found, with adolescents who increased their IU at T1 and T2 also increasing their EP difficulties at T2 and T3, respectively. The opposite effect had a smaller effect size. In sum, our study showed that IU and EP are intertwined in adolescents and that changes in IU precede corresponding changes in EP. These results suggest a priority of change between IU and EP and confirm the relationship between IU and emotion regulation problems in adolescence.
