The coding of constrained and preselected movement distance: same-limb versus switched-limb reproduction

Performance on trials without knowledge results (KR) in reduced relative frequency presentations of KR

Following Salmoni, Schmidt, & Walter's (1984) discussion of knowledge of results (KR) as a variable influencing learning, the effect of varying relative frequency of KR while holding absolute number of trials constant was examined. In two experiments, the same treatment groups were compared in acquisition, retention (after 2 min and 24 hr), and on their pattern of responses on the sequence of no-KR trials following a KR trial. In Experiment 1, differences between groups in acquisition were consistent with the number of KR trials received, and there were no differences between groups in either of the retention conditions. Experiment 2 replicated Experiment 1 with a more difficult task. There were no between-group differences in acquisition. In Retention 1, the 100% and 33% relative frequency groups outperformed the less frequent KR groups, whereas in Retention 2, this trend was reversed. The findings from Experiment 2 provide qualified support for the hypothesis that reduced relative frequency of KR in acquisition facilitates performance in retention. The pattern of responses on the sequence of no-KR trials following a KR trial were consistent with Adams' (1971) perceptual-trace decay hypothesis.

Motor memory and the preselection effect in Huntington's and Parkinson's disease

Patients with Huntington's disease (HD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) show different patterns of preserved and impaired memory performance. This study investigates explicit memory for movements in HD and PD with a linear positioning apparatus using Dick et al.'s procedure (J. Gerontol. 43, 127-135, 1988). In the first experiment, 12 HD patients were compared to 12 matched-controls. HD patients were more impaired than the controls by the delay between criterion and recall movements, whether the delay was filled or unfilled. Switching the limb between criterion and recall movements did not lead to more effects in HD patients and in controls. In the second experiment, 12 non-demented PD patients were compared to matched-controls. PD patients were more impaired than controls when the recall movement was executed with the contralateral hand, but were not more affected by the delay. In both experiments, HD and PD patients, as well as the controls, recalled self-generated preselected movements better than imposed movements. These results suggest the existence of distinct forms of motor memory impairment in some subcortical neurodegenerative diseases.

Interference Between Location and Distance Information in Motor Short-Term Memory: The Respective Roles of Direct Kinesthetic Signals and Abstract Codes

Interference between location and distance information in motor short-term memory has been hypothesized on the basis of the systematic pattern of undershooting and overshooting in movement reproduction that occurs when the starting position for reproduction movements is shifted. To determine the possible contribution of limb-specific kinesthetic information to this systematic undershooting-overshooting pattern, we compared the reproduction of linear arm positioning movements performed under either same-limb or switched-limb conditions. Ten subjects were assigned to either a location or distance cue condition, and each subject completed a total of 40 trials, 20 under same-limb and 20 under switched-limb conditions. Each trial consisted of criterion and reproduction movements, separated by a 10-s retention interval. The starting position for the reproduction movement was shifted by 0, 2, or 4 cm in either direction from that of the criterion movement. The systematic undershooting-overshooting pattern, which occurs when either the movement location or distance is reproduced, arose under both the same-limb and switched-limb conditions, suggesting that the primary cause of the location-distance interference is not limb-specific kinesthetic information. Rather, more abstract information in the form of a conceptual memory code appears to be the probable cause of the location distance interference phenomenon.

Visual control of movement patterns and the grammar of action

In this experiment adult subjects copied three types of material (letters, reversed letters and geometric shapes) with and without sight of the hand and the writing trace. Without vision the number of movement segments decreased and the sequence and direction of movements were altered. This means that subjects did not use a fixed stored representation to produce items nor did they obey the rules of Goodnow and Levine's (1973) grammar of action. When spatial location is made more difficult by the removal of vision, movement production is simplified to reduce the number of relocations required. The use of consistent directions of movement depends on the ability to use visual control of spatial location.
