Light hydrocarbons vertical profiles and fluxes in a french rural area

Vertical distribution of hydrocarbons in the low troposphere below and above the mixing height: tethered balloon measurements in Milan, Italy

A novel approach for measuring vertical profiles of HCs and particle number concentrations was described and applied in the low troposphere over Milan (Italy) during typical spring and summer days. Particle profiles yielded nearly homogeneous concentrations below the mixing height, with level-to-ground concentration ratios of 92-97%, while HCs showed a more pronounced decrease (74-95%). Vertical mixing and photochemical loss of HCs were demonstrated to cause these gradients. Much lower concentrations were observed for the profiles above the mixing height, where the HC mixtures showed also a different composition, which was partially explained by the horizontal advection of air with HC sources different to those prevailing at the site. The application of pseudo-first order kinetics for reactions between HCs and the hydroxyl radical allowed for the estimation of the vertical mixing time scale in the order of 100 ± 20 min.

Importance of handling organic atmospheric pollutants for assessing air quality

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the main precursors of tropospheric ozone production, playing an important role in photochemical pollution of the atmosphere and, consequently, in the degradation of air quality. Air quality photochemical models require a specific VOC profile for each different main source, based on the most important group compounds. Chromatographic techniques have been used to identify and measure VOC in Portugal. These measured values were used to simulate photochemical pollution, and modelling results were compared with those from another simulation using VOC class distributions from the literature. Ozone concentration values estimated via both simulations indicate the importance of using VOC data from Portugal instead of those obtained in different conditions.

On the use of manned hydrogen-gas ballooning in boundary layer studies

Measurements of nitrogen dioxide, ozone and, for the first time, on-line, nonmethane hydrocarbons with a quasicontinuous gaschromatographic/flame ionization technique were performed on a manned hydrogen-gas balloon platform. A cycle time of 10 min allowed the determination of nonmethane hydrocarbons in the carbon number range of C(4)-C(10) with a detection limit of 10 pptv. In addition, meteorological parameters (atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity) along with GPS-data (global positioning system) was accomplished during the balloon flights. Balloon measurements of trace compounds provide valuable information about photochemical processes in the boundary layer since gas ballooning offers the only technique that stays in the same air parcel along Langrangian trajectories. In addition, gas ballooning represents a unique tool to elucidate micrometeorological observations such as atmospheric stability oscillations and local wind fields.
