Emotion and autobiographical memory

Autobiographical memory encompasses our recollections of specific, personal events. In this article, we review the interactions between emotion and autobiographical memory, focusing on two broad ways in which these interactions occur. First, the emotional content of an experience can influence the way in which the event is remembered. Second, emotions and emotional goals experienced at the time of autobiographical retrieval can influence the information recalled. We discuss the behavioral manifestations of each of these types of interactions and describe the neural mechanisms that may support those interactions. We discuss how findings from the clinical literature (e.g., regarding depression) and the social psychology literature (e.g., on emotion regulation) might inform future investigations of the interplay between the emotions experienced at the time of retrieval and the memories recalled, and we present ideas for future research in this domain.

Peripheral modulation of learning and memory: enkephalins as a model system

Extensive research on the effects of enkephalins on conditioning is reviewed and used as the basis for a model of peripheral modulation of learning and memory. An overall theme emphasized throughout our discussion is that these peptides can influence the strength with which a memory is acquired and stored by acting outside the blood-brain barrier. This assertion is supported by research on the behavioral effects of systemically administered enkephalins and opioid antagonists, the rapid hydrolysis of circulating enkephalins in vivo, and the limited ability of these peptides to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. A consideration of the extensive distribution of enkephalins throughout peripheral autonomic systems leads to the proposal that enkephalins may act to modulate learning and memory by altering peripheral autonomic function; autonomic afferents may then communicate with the memory trace in the CNS through a central modulatory pathway outlined herein. Evidence that some stressful experiences may lead to increases in circulating enkephalins also is discussed. The sites of action of these circulating enkephalins may involve peripheral autonomic sites, or additionally may involve the circumventricular organs. As a further regulatory mechanism, circulating enkephalin levels may be controlled by experience-dependent alterations of the activity of enzyme systems that participate in their breakdown. Finally, it is emphasized that the mechanisms of enkephalin action postulated herein may be applicable to the actions of other peripheral hormones, peptides, and neurotransmitters that participate in the modulation of learning and memory storage processes.

Flashbulb memories? The effects of when the initial memory report was obtained

Why have some researchers found reports of flashbulb memories to be stable, while others have observed inconsistencies? Paradoxically, it appears that relatively long delays between event and initial documentation have produced greater consistency of participants' reports. To investigate this directly, we collected the initial documentation of hearing about O.J. Simpson's acquittal either five hours or one week after the acquittal was read. Observed consistency of memories varied as a function of documentation time; following an eight-week retention, the delayed reports were more consistent. The delayed group also reported fewer propositions in their initial documentation. We proposed a consolidation model to explain these results: during the days immediately following a newsworthy event, the narrative structure of these memories changes in that some details are forgotten. After this consolidation period, the memories may solidify. Thus, it may have been easier for the delayed group to provide consistent memories at the two intervals.

Remembering the earthquake: direct experience vs. hearing the news

Three groups of informants--two in California, one in Atlanta--recalled their experiences of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake shortly after the event and again 11/2 years later. The Californians' recalls of their own earthquake experiences were virtually perfect. Even their recalls of hearing the news of an earthquake-related event were very good: much higher than Atlantan recalls of hearing about the quake itself. Atlantans who had relatives in the affected area remembered significantly more than those who did not. These data show that personal involvement in the quake led to greatly improved recall, but do not show why. Many Californian informants reported low levels of stress/arousal during the event; arousal ratings were not significantly correlated with recall. The authors suggest that repeated narrative rehearsals may have played an important role.

Vivid memories of emotional events: the accuracy of remembered minutiae

It has been claimed that emotional arousal causes a narrowing of attention, and, therefore, impoverished memory encoding. On this view, if details of an emotional event are reported subsequently, these details must be after-the-fact reconstructions that are open to error. Our study challenges these claims. Using a long-term (2-week), incidental learning procedure, we found that emotion promotes memory both for information central to an event and for peripheral detail. This contrasts with the results of explicit instructions to remember or to attend closely to the event, both of which seem to promote memory for the event's gist at the expense of detail. The likely mechanisms underlying these effects are discussed.
