Abstract
The intriguing chemistry of chalcogen (S, Se)-containing ligands and their capability to bridge multiple metal centres have resulted in a plethora of reports on transition metal complexes featuring hydrosulfide (HS-) and polychalcogenides (En2-, E = S, Se). While a large number of such molecules are strictly organometallic complexes, examples of non-organometallic complexes featuring HS- and En2- with N-/O-donor ligands are relatively rare. The general synthetic procedure for the transition metal-hydrosulfido complexes involves the reaction of the corresponding metal salts with HS-/H2S and this is prone to generate sulfido bridged oligomers in the absence of sterically demanding ligands. On the other hand, the synthetic methods for the preparation of transition metal-polychalcogenido complexes include the reaction of the corresponding metal salts with En2- or the two electron oxidation of low-valent metals with elemental chalcogen, often at an elevated temperature and/or for a long time. Recently, we have developed new synthetic methods for the preparation of two new classes of binuclear transition metal complexes featuring either HS-, or Sn2- and Sen2- ligands. The new method for the synthesis of transition metal-hydrosulfido complexes involved transition metal-mediated hydrolysis of thiolates at room temperature (RT), while the method for the synthesis of transition metal-polychalcogenido complexes involved redox reaction of coordinated thiolates and exogenous elemental chalcogens at RT. An overview of the synthetic aspects, structural properties and intriguing reactivity of these two new classes of transition metal complexes is presented.

Abstract
A series of six binuclear Co(II)-thiolate complexes, [Co2(BPMP)(S-C6H4-o-X)2]1+ (X = OMe, 2; NH2, 3), [Co2(BPMP)(μ-S-C6H4-o-O)]1+ (4), and [Co2(BPMP)(μ-Y)]1+ (Y = bdt, 5; tdt, 6; mnt, 7), has been synthesized from [Co2(BPMP)(MeOH)2(Cl)2]1+ (1a) and [Co2(BPMP)(Cl)2]1+ (1b), where BPMP1- is the anion of 2,6-bis[[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]methyl]-4-methylphenol. While 2 and 3 could allow the two-electron redox reaction of the two coordinated thiolates with elemental sulfur (S8) to generate [Co2(BPMP)(μ-S5)]1+ (8), the complexes, 4-7, could not undergo a similar reaction. An analogous redox reaction of 2 with elemental selenium ([Se]) produced [{Co2(BPMP)(μ-Se4)}{Co2(BPMP)(μ-Se3)}]2+ (9a) and [Co2(BPMP)(μ-Se4)]1+ (9b). Further reaction of these polychalcogenido complexes, 8 and 9a/9b, with PPh3 allowed the isolation of [Co2(BPMP)(μ-S)]1+ (10) and [Co2(BPMP)(μ-Se2)]1+ (11), which, in turn, could be converted back to 8 and 9a upon treatment with S8 and [Se], respectively. Interestingly, while the redox reaction of the polyselenide chains in 9a and 11 with S8 produced 8 and [Se], the treatment of 8 with [Se] gave back only the starting material (8), thus demonstrating the different redox behavior of sulfur and selenium. Furthermore, the reaction of 8 and 9a/9b with activated alkynes and cyanide (CN-) allowed the isolation of the complexes, [Co2(BPMP)(μ-E2C2(CO2R)2)]1+ (E = S: 12a, R = Me; 12b, R = Et; E = Se: 13a, R = Me; 13b, R = Et) and [Co2(BPMP)(μ-SH)(NCS)2] (14), respectively. The present work, thus, provides an interesting synthetic strategy, interconversions, and detailed comparative reactivity of binuclear Co(II)-polychalcogenido complexes.

Abstract
Elemental chalcogens react with [Fe(CN)2(CO)3]2- to give the following ferrous derivatives: [K(18-crown-6)]2[Fe(S5)(CN)2(CO)2], [K(18-crown-6)]2[Fe(S2)(CN)2(CO)2], [K(18-crown-6)]2[Fe(Se4)(CN)2(CO)2], [K(18-crown-6)]2[Fe(Te2)(CN)2(CO)2], and (NEt4)2[Fe(Te2)(CN)2(CO)2]. While these complex anions crystallized in a single stereochemistry (i.e., trans dicyanides or cis dicyanides), they isomerize in solution upon irradiation. The results are benchmarked by the corresponding studies on benzyl thiolate [K(18-crown-6)]2[Fe(SBn)2(CN)2(CO)2].

Abstract
The reactions of E powder (E=S, Se) with a mixture of Cr(CO)6 and Mn2(CO)10 in concentrated solutions of KOH/MeOH produced two new mixed Cr-Mn-carbonyl clusters, [E2CrMn2(CO)9](2-) (E=S, 1; Se, 2). Clusters 1 and 2 were isostructural with one another and each displayed a trigonal-bipyramidal structure, with the CrMn2 triangle axially capped by two μ3-E atoms. The analogous telluride cluster, [Te2CrMn2(CO)9](2-) (3), was obtained from the ring-closure of Te2Mn2 ring complex [Te2Mn2Cr2(CO)18](2-) (4). Upon bubbling with CO, clusters 2 and 3 were readily converted into square-pyramidal clusters, [E2CrMn2(CO)10](2-) (E=Se, 5; Te, 6), accompanied with the cleavage of one Cr-Mn bond. According to SQUID analysis, cluster 6 was paramagnetic, with S=1 at room temperature; however, the Se analogue (5) was spectroscopically proposed to be diamagnetic, as verified by TD-DFT calculations. Cluster 6 could be further carbonylated, with cleavage of the Mn-Mn bond to produce a new arachno-cluster, [Te2CrMn2(CO)11](2-) (7). The formation and structural isomers, as well as electrochemistry and UV/Vis absorption, of these clusters were also elucidated by DFT calculations.

Abstract
Ln(SePh)(3) (Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd), prepared by reduction of PhSeSePh with elemental Ln and Hg catalyst, reacts with excess elemental Se to give (py)(11)Ln(7)Se(21)HgSePh, an ellipsoidal polyselenide cluster. The molecular structure contains two square arrays of eight- or nine-coordinate Ln fused at one edge to form a V shape that is also capped on the concave side by a centrally located nine-coordinate (Se(3))pyLn(Se(3)) and on the convex side by a 2-fold disordered SeHgSePh. The central Ln coordinates to selenido, triselenido, and pyridine ligands, while all other Ln coordinate to selenido, diselenido, triselenido, and pyridine ligands. Thermal treatment of the Pr compound at 650 °C gave Pr(2)Se(3) and Pr(3)Se(4). NIR emission studies of the Nd compound show four transitions from the excited-state (4)F(3/2) ion to (4)I(9/2), (4)I(11/2), (4)I(13/2), and (4)I(15/2) states. The (4)F(3/2) ion to (4)I(11/2) transition (1075 nm emission) exhibited 43% quantum efficiency. This is the highest quantum efficiency reported for a 'molecular' Nd compound and leads a group of selenide-based clusters that has shown extraordinary quantum efficiency. In terms of efficiency and concentration, these compounds compare favorably with solid-state materials.

Abstract
A series of novel aluminum heterobimetallic selenides were reported. The reaction of LAl(SeH)2 (1) with LiN(SiMe3)2 resulted in the formation of [LAl(SeLi)2(THF)2] (2) (L = HC(CMeNAr)2, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3). Compound 2 reacted with Me2GeCl2, Ph2GeCl2, Cp2TiCl2, and Cp2ZrCl2, respectively, to produce LAl(mu-Se)2GeMe2 (3), LAl(mu-Se)2GePh2 (4), LAl(mu-Se)2TiCp2 (5), and LAl(mu-Se)2ZrCp2 (6) in moderate yields. Compounds 2-6 were characterized by elemental analysis, NMR, and electron impact-MS. The X-ray single-crystal structure of 3 is reported and confirms the spirocyclic arrangement of the aluminum atom within the six-membered AlN2C3 and four-membered AlSe2Ge rings.

Abstract
Heating WTe(2), Te, and Br(2) at 390 degrees C followed by extraction with KCN gives [W(3)Te(7)(CN)(6)](2-). Crystal structures of double salts Cs(3.5)K{[W(3)Te(7)(CN)(6)]Br}Br(1.5).4.5H(2)O (1), Cs(2)K(4){[W(3)Te(7)(CN)(6)](2)Cl}Cl.5H(2)O (2), and (Ph(4)P)(3){[W(3)Te(7)(CN)(6)]Br}.H(2)O (3) reveal short Te(2)...X (X = Cl, Br) contacts. Reaction of polymeric Mo(3)Se(7)Br(4) with KNCSe melt gives [Mo(3)Se(7)(CN)(6)](2-). Reactions of polymeric Mo(3)S(7)Br(4) and Mo(3)Te(7)I(4) with KNCSe melt (200-220 degrees C) all give as final product [Mo(3)Se(7)(CN)(6)](2)(-) via intermediate formation of [Mo(3)S(4)Se(3)(CN)(6)](2-)/[Mo(3)SSe(6)(CN)(6)](2-) and of [Mo(3)Te(4)Se(3)(CN)(6)](2-), respectively, as was shown by ESI-MS. (NH(4))(1.5)K(3){[Mo(3)Se(7)(CN)(6)]I}I(1.5).4.5H(2)O (4) was isolated and structurally characterized. Reactions of W(3)Q(7)Br(4) (Q = S, Se) with KNCSe lead to [W(3)Q(4)(CN)(9)](5-). Heating W(3)Te(7)Br(4) in KCNSe melt gives a complicated mixture of W(3)Q(7) and W(3)Q(4) derivatives, as was shown by ESI-MS, from which E(3)[W(3)(mu(3)-Te)(mu-TeSe)(3)(CN)(6)]Br.6H(2)O (5) and K(5)[W(3)(mu(3)-Te)(mu-Se)(3)(CN)(9)] (6) were isolated. X-ray analysis of 5 reveals the presence of a new TeSe(2-) ligand. The complexes were characterized by IR, Raman, electronic, and (77)Se and (125)Te NMR spectra and by ESI mass spectrometry.

Abstract
The compound [PPh(4)](2)[NEt(4)][CuTe(7)] has been synthesized from the reaction of CuCl with a polytelluride solution in dimethylformamide at room temperature. The compound crystallizes with two formula units in the triclinic space group P(-)1 in a cell with dimensions a = 8.9507(18) A, b = 14.714(3) A, and c = 23.277(5) A and alpha= 86.32(3) degrees, beta= 80.17(3) degrees, and gamma= 75.63(3) degrees (T = -120 degrees C). Ab initio calculations indicate that the nonclassical [CuTe(7)](3)(-) anion is the result of joining Te(3)(2-) and [CuTe(4)](1-) fragments through donor-acceptor interactions.
