Late components of saccade-related brain potentials in guessing tasks

Parallel word reading revealed by fixation-related brain potentials

During reading, the brain is confronted with many relevant objects at once. But does lexical processing occur for multiple words simultaneously? Cognitive science has yet to answer this prominent question. Recently it has been argued that the issue warrants supplementing the field's traditional toolbox (response times, eye-tracking) with neuroscientific techniques (EEG, fMRI). Indeed, according to the OB1-reader model, upcoming words need not impact oculomotor behavior per se, but parallel processing of these words must nonetheless be reflected in neural activity. Here we combined eye-tracking with EEG, time-locking the neural window of interest to the fixation on target words in sentence reading. During these fixations, we manipulated the identity of the subsequent word so that it posed either a syntactically legal or illegal continuation of the sentence. In line with previous research, oculomotor measures were unaffected. Yet, syntax impacted brain potentials as early as 100 ms after the target fixation onset. Given the EEG literature on syntax processing, the presently observed timings suggest parallel word reading. We reckon that parallel word processing typifies reading, and that OB1-reader offers a good platform for theorizing about the reading brain.

Transient cortical excitation at the onset of visual fixation

Primates actively examine the visual world by rapidly shifting gaze (fixation) over the elements in a scene. Despite this fact, we typically study vision by presenting stimuli with gaze held constant. To better understand the dynamics of natural vision, we examined how the onset of visual fixation affects ongoing neuronal activity in the absence of visual stimulation. We used multiunit activity and current source density measurements to index neuronal firing patterns and underlying synaptic processes in macaque V1. Initial averaging of neural activity synchronized to the onset of fixation suggested that a brief period of cortical excitation follows each fixation. Subsequent single-trial analyses revealed that 1) neuronal oscillation phase transits from random to a highly organized state just after the fixation onset, 2) this phase concentration is accompanied by increased spectral power in several frequency bands, and 3) visual response amplitude is enhanced at the specific oscillatory phase associated with fixation. We hypothesize that nonvisual inputs are used by the brain to increase cortical excitability at fixation onset, thus "priming" the system for new visual inputs generated at fixation. Despite remaining mechanistic questions, it appears that analysis of fixation-related responses may be useful in studying natural vision.

Estimation of an unexpected-overlooking error by means of the single eye fixation related potential analysis with wavelet transform filter

An unexpected-overlooking error that caused failure to notice near the peripheral vision is one of the accident factors in driving behavior. We estimated how the unexpected-overlooking error affected the amplitude of the lambda wave in the eye fixation related potential (EFRP). Four subjects participated in the experiment. Each subject was required press the right or left switch according to the given task, which was that he/she pressed the right switch when the blue dot appeared in the right detected area or he/she pressed the left switch when the red dot appeared in the right. The single trial data from Pz, which referred to both earlobes, were analyzed by means of a wavelet transform (WT) filter. The difference of the lambda amplitude between the corrected data was applied for analysis of variance. Three subjects showed a significant effect (P<0.01 or P<0.05), and the remaining one subject did not show a significant consequence of only two errors. The unexpected-overlooking errors had a low amplitude compared to the mean of amplitude throughout the task. It was concluded that the amplitude of the lambda wave might reflect the attention level of a subject.

Simultaneous identification of eye fixation related potentials and reaction related potentials from single-trial signals

To obtain the effective components from event related potentials (ERPs), it has been necessary to average the waveforms of several trials. ERP data reflect the psychophysiological state of a subject. Time variation is an important feature in ERP analysis, and so the single-trial method is required. A method is proposed to identify simultaneously both eye fixation related potentials (EFRPs) and reaction related potentials (RRPs) using wavelength transforms. The EFRP is an ERP associated with saccadic eye movement. The RRP is defined as a component similar to P300 gained from the reaction signal. Six subjects participate in the oddball task. The task takes 30 min for each subject. Electroencephalograms (EEGs), electro-oculograms (EOGs) and electromyograms (EMGs) are simultaneously recorded. The EFRP is extracted for the offset of saccade from EOG, and the RRP is extracted for the onset of reaction from EMG. The results show that the estimated waveforms described well each of the components in the EFRP and RRP. Moreover, the simulation results show that the amplitudes of the lambda wave are estimated to within an error of 4%, and those of the latencies are within 0.4%, with an SNR of 4.5dB. Those of P300 were 11 and 4%, respectively. The reliability of the method is proved to be sufficient for estimating ERPs.

Context effects on saccade-related brain potentials to words during reading

In two experiments saccade-related brain potentials (SRPs) to sentences were investigated under conditions approximating natural reading. Our aim was to look for electrophysiological (SRP) signs of sentence context on the processing of final words that were either congruent or incongruent with the meaning of the sentence. In Experiment 1 subjects indicated by a button-press whether or not the final word was congruent with the context, while in Experiment 2 they read silently without an overt decision. In Experiment 1, SRPs to incongruent words were more negative than SRPs to congruent words between 80-310 msec (from saccade offset). In Experiment 2, however, the inconcruent SRPs became more negative than the congruent SRPs only between 280-460 msec. These results suggest that in Experiment 1, during the processing of incongruent words the early sign of registering mismatch appears simultaneously with the analysis of the visual features of the word.

Influence of saccades on manual reactions--a reaction time and VEP study

Experiments were performed to investigate the retardation of motor reactions, triggered immediately after saccadic eye movements, by comparing VEP latencies and manual reaction times. As visual stimuli grating patterns of different spatial frequencies were used. They were presented during continuous fixation ("resting eye" condition) as well as shortly after a saccade ("saccadic" condition) with different onset delays (25, 50, 100, 150 msec), in order to determine the influence of saccades on VEP latencies and on manual reaction times. Compared with the reaction times in the "resting eye" condition, the postsaccadic reaction times were much prolonged whereas the respective VEP latencies are almost unchanged. Thus an inhibitory interaction of different motor responses (i.e. saccadic eye movements and manual reactions in this study) at higher levels of the afferent system or at the motor control site is postulated. This result has been confirmed for stimuli of different spatial frequencies.

Electrocortical signs of word categorization in saccade-related brain potentials and visual evoked potentials

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) elicited by foveal presentation of words were compared to brain potentials evoked by the same words in a condition where subjects had to make a saccadic eye movement in order to perceive the words (saccade-related brain potentials, SRPs). Subjects had to categorize the words responding with a button press to stimuli belonging to the target (infrequent, P = 0.2) category. The VEP and SRP waveforms showed divergences in the early (up to 250 ms) components, but a marked similarity between the late components. Principal Component Analysis also revealed the same relationship between the two types of brain responses. Peak latency of the late SRP components measured from saccade offset showed an apparent processing advantage over the corresponding late components of VEPs. The N3 component, indexing semantic processing of visual patterns, peaked between 310 and 375 ms in the SRPs, while in the VEPs it appeared between 410 and 470 ms. The P4 component, associated with final stimulus evaluation, showed a similar latency benefit in favour of SRPs (420-500 ms vs 530-590 ms in VEPs). The mean reaction time was 74 ms shorter in the eye movement condition (measured from saccade offset) than in the VEP condition (703 vs 777 ms). The question of what kind of processes may contribute to the differences in mean RTs and to the latencies of the late components between the two conditions are discussed. We suggest that the late components (P3, N3 and P4) of the VEP and the SRP, respectively, index identical brain processes.

Saccade-related brain potentials in semantic categorization tasks

Saccade-related brain potentials (SRPs) were recorded in word categorization tasks in which subjects had to perform a saccade in order to perceive the stimulus. For all three conditions representing different degrees of complexity of semantic categorization, the stimuli belonged to one of two categories which appeared with the respective probabilities of either 0.20 or 0.80. The late positivity (P4) of the SRPs to infrequent stimuli appeared systematically later as the complexity of stimulus evaluation increased: The easiest categorization was accompanied by a P4 at 400 msec, in the more complex condition it peaked at 600 msec, and in the most difficult semantic categorization the P4 peaked even later, at 680 msec. This shift in peak latency with increasing complexity of categorization is in agreement with the results for traditional ERPs (e.g. Kutas and Donchin, 1978). The possible overlap of the late components was investigated by applying Principal Component-Varimax Analysis to the SRPs.
