Sports injury or trauma? Injuries of the competition off-road motorcyclist

A prospective analysis of the injuries of off-road competition motorcyclist at four International Six Day Enduro (ISDE) events was performed utilizing the injury severity score (ISS) and the abbreviated injury scale (AIS). Of the 1787 participants, approximately 10% received injuries that required attention from a medical response unit. The majority (85%) sustained a mild injury (mean ISS 3.9). Loss of control while jumping and striking immovable objects were important risk determinants for serious injury. Although seasoned in off-road experiences, mean 15.3 years, 54% of those injured were first year rookies to the ISDE event. Speeds were below 50 km/h in the majority of accidents (80%), and were not statistically correlated with severity. The most frequently injured anatomical regions were the extremities (57%). The most common types of injury were ligamentous (50%). Seventy-seven percent of all fractures were AIS grades 1 and 2. The most common fractures were those of the foot and ankle (36%). Multiple fractures involving different anatomical regions, or a combination of serious injuries was seen with only one rider. When compared to the injuries of the street motorcyclist, competition riders had lower AIS grades of head and limb trauma. Off-road motorcycle competition is a relatively safe sport with injury rates comparably less than those of contact sports such as American football and hockey.

Motorcycle crashes in New Zealand resulting in death and hospitalisation. I: Introduction methods and overview

Relative to car crashes motorcycle crashes have received relatively little attention by the research community. This is the first in a series of three papers describing the epidemiology of motorcycle crashes resulting in death and hospitalisation in New Zealand. This paper describes the methods used for the study, provides an overview of all crashes, and, in particular, compares traffic crashes with nontraffic crashes. The source of the fatality data was national mortality data files for the years 1978 to 1987 inclusive. The source of the hospitalisation data was a national morbidity file, which records all public hospital discharges in New Zealand. A total of 1,175 motorcyclist fatalities were identified for the period 1978-1987, resulting in a mortality rate of 3.6 per 100,000 persons per year. A total of 2,623 motorcycle crash victims were hospitalised in 1988 resulting in a hospitalisation rate of 80.4 per 100,000 persons per year. Males, especially those 15-24 years of age had very high mortality (26-27) and morbidity rates (464-462). Motor vehicle traffic crashes represented 96% of the fatalities and 85% of the hospitalisations. Drivers were the victims in 88% of fatalities and 86% of hospitalisations. For hospitalised victims the leading injuries were to the lower limb (43%) and head (24%). Whereas 29% of the traffic crashes were AIS-3 or higher the comparable figure for nontraffic crashes was 19%. There has been a significant linear increase in the fatality rate between 1978 and 1988 but no comparable trend in hospitalisations.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Injury patterns in motorcycle accident victims]

An analysis of the injury patterns presented by inpatients of a government teaching hospital, known as one of the emergency centers of S. Paulo city, Brazil, is given the majority of victims are young, male adults and most of them were later discharged from the hospital. In relation to the injuries the majority of the patients were classified as being of minor injury grade (ISS between 1 and 9) and the most frequent injuries were extremity and pelvic fractures, surface trauma, traumatic brain injury and extremity and pelvic dislocations. Besides extremity and pelvic fractures, the victims who died showed abdominal organ injury and traumatic brain injury and the ISS was over 20. Head injury patients who had a high Glasgow Coma Scale score had a low ISS and vice-versa.
