What Do Danish Youth Want to Know About Sex? Twenty Years of Telephone Counseling on Sexual and Reproductive Issues

Young people's need for sexual counseling is well documented, and both website and hotline-based services have been established as means of health promotion in this field. Such measures, however, are rarely evaluated, so this article offers data from the world's presumably oldest sexuality helpline aimed at young people. With an observation time of two decades and a total of 42,325 questions asked, the study provides a unique glance into the sexual landscapes of Danish youth. It shows an overall male predominance among callers and reveals that the counseling themes change over time and differ between both age groups and genders. The article suggests that telephone counseling-although more resource demanding than online alternatives-provides a secure, anonymous, and dialogue-based arena for discussing delicate sexual issues and therefore may constitute a viable supplement to web-based media for young people with the need to talk rather than just chat.

Masturbation among women: associated factors and sexual response in a Portuguese community sample

Masturbation is a common sexual practice with significant variations in reported incidence between men and women. The goal of this study was to explore (a) the age at initiation and frequency of masturbation, (b) the associations of masturbation with diverse variables, (c) the reported reasons for masturbating and associated emotions, and (d) the relation between frequency of masturbation and different sexual behavioral factors. Participants were 3,687 women who completed a web-based survey of previously pilot-tested items. The results reveal a high reported incidence of masturbation practices among this convenience sample of women. Among the women in this sample, 91% indicated that they had masturbated at some point in their lives, and 29.3% reported having masturbated within the past month. Masturbation behavior appears to be related to a greater sexual repertoire, more sexual fantasies, and greater reported ease in reaching sexual arousal and orgasm. Women reported many reasons for masturbation and a variety of direct and indirect techniques. A minority of women reported feeling shame and guilt associated with masturbation. Early masturbation experience might be beneficial to sexual arousal and orgasm in adulthood. Further, this study demonstrates that masturbation is a positive component in the structuring of female sexuality.

Prevalence of masturbation and associated factors in a British national probability survey

A stratified probability sample survey of the British general population, aged 16 to 44 years, was conducted from 1999 to 2001 (N = 11,161) using face-to-face interviewing and computer-assisted self-interviewing. We used these data to estimate the population prevalence of masturbation, and to identify sociodemographic, sexual behavioral, and attitudinal factors associated with reporting this behavior. Seventy-three percent of men and 36.8% of women reported masturbating in the 4 weeks prior to interview (95% confidence interval 71.5%-74.4% and 35.4%-38.2%, respectively). A number of sociodemographic and behavioral factors were associated with reporting masturbation. Among both men and women, reporting masturbation increased with higher levels of education and social class and was more common among those reporting sexual function problems. For women, masturbation was more likely among those who reported more frequent vaginal sex in the last four weeks, a greater repertoire of sexual activity (such as reporting oral and anal sex), and more sexual partners in the last year. In contrast, the prevalence of masturbation was lower among men reporting more frequent vaginal sex. Both men and women reporting same-sex partner(s) were significantly more likely to report masturbation. Masturbation is a common sexual practice with significant variations in reporting between men and women.
