Division of inputs between hemispheres eliminates illusory conjunctions

[Independent resource of each hemisphere modulates selective attention]

Based on the load theory and the assumption that each hemisphere has independent resources, we examined the effects of perceptual load in each hemisphere on the compatibility effect. In Experiments 1, and 2ab, two letter-strings were presented to the left and right visual-fields with a distracter, which was presented on the center of the screen. Two conditions were prepared by pairing a letter-string which contained a target with one which did not. Right-handed participants were asked to identify the target in the letter-strings while ignoring the distracter. The results showed that the compatibility effect was larger when the perceptual load of the letter-string which did not contain a target was low. This suggests that the residual resources of the hemisphere where the target was not projected facilitated the processing of the distracter. In Experiment 3, two letter-strings were presented to both hemispheres. The results showed that the compatibility effect was constant, irrespective of the perceptual load of the letter-string. Our findings suggested that selective attention is modulated by the resources of each hemisphere.

Benefits of interhemispheric collaboration can be eliminated by mixing stimulus formats that involve different cortical access routes

Previous studies indicate that the benefits of dividing an information processing load across both cerebral hemispheres outweigh the costs of interhemispheric transfer as tasks become more difficult or cognitively complex. This is demonstrated as better performance when two stimuli to be compared are presented one to each visual field and hemisphere than when both stimuli are presented to the same single hemisphere (an across-hemisphere advantage). Two experiments indicate that this finding does not generalize to complex tasks that require matching numeric quantities represented by two very different visual formats whose processing involves somewhat different cortical areas: digits and dice-like dot patterns. In fact, mixing these stimulus formats consistently produces a within-hemisphere advantage. We propose that, when two simultaneously presented stimuli are presented in sufficiently different visual formats, identification of the two stimuli may take place in parallel, via different cortical access routes and with little or no interference, even when they are presented to the same cerebral hemisphere.

Hemispheric activation and interaction: Past activity affects future performance

Previous studies have shown that when hemispheric activation is modulated by a lateralised task performed concurrently with a second task, performance in the second task is affected by the side of the more active hemisphere. This effect is thought to be produced by competition for limited resources required to complete the two tasks and/or by a greater allocation of attention to the hemifield contralateral to the more active hemisphere. Little is known on how task performance is affected by the pattern of activation in the two cerebral hemispheres before a target task is conducted. The present study investigated how manipulation of hemispheric activity influenced performance of a non-lateralised task (letter matching). Greater left hemisphere activity interfered most with performance of the letter- matching task and was more pronounced in the early learning stage. Male participants were most affected by this effect. The results are discussed in relation to hemispheric interaction, functional lateralisation, and allocation of attention.

Mind the gap: interhemispheric communication about emotional faces

This study tested the hypothesis that interhemispheric communication about emotional stimuli is influenced by situational factors that alter emotional relevance. Under evaluative or nonevaluative conditions, participants matched angry and happy faces within a single visual field or across opposite visual fields. An overall across-field advantage (AFA) reflected the benefit of sharing information between the hemispheres. The AFA was greater for angry than for happy faces in the evaluation condition but did not differ for angry and happy faces in the no-evaluation condition. Examination of individual differences indicated that high trait evaluation levels of worry were associated with poorer interhemispheric communication of angry faces, supporting a threat-avoidance conception of worry. Thus, both situational factors and individual differences affected interhemispheric communication about emotional faces.

Perceptual interactions between bilaterally presented words: what you get is often not what you see

Bilateral presentations of words, 1 in the left visual hemifield (LVF) and 1 in the right (RVF), are used widely in studies of hemispheric asymmetry. However, although words shown centrally (i.e., nonlaterally) produce perceptual interactions in which 1 word alters the perceived identity of the other, perceptual interactions between bilaterally presented words have never been reported. To investigate this issue, the authors used brief, bilateral displays of words (e.g., romp-ramp) presented simultaneously. An eye tracker and forced-choice task ensured appropriate presentation and testing. Report accuracy was greatest for RVF words. However, this was accompanied by perceptual interactions that occurred almost exclusively in responses to LVF words, indicating that RVF words often altered the perceived identity of LVF words but not vice versa.

The cerebral hemispheres cooperate to perform complex but not simple tasks

Three experiments were designed to examine whether task complexity determines the degree to which a division of processing across the hemispheres (i.e., across-hemisphere processing) underlies performance when within- and across-hemisphere processing are equally possible. When task complexity was relatively low, performance in a midline condition that allowed for either within- or across-hemispheric processing resembled within-hemisphere performance (Experiments 1 and 2). However, when task complexity was high, performance in a midline condition (Experiments 1 and 2) and a lateralized condition, which also allowed for either within- or across-hemisphere processing (Experiment 3), resembled across-hemisphere performance. Results complement and extend prior work (e.g., M. T. Banich & A. Belger, 1990) by indicating that the degree to which interhemispheric cooperation underlies performance changes with the complexity of the task being performed. This finding suggests that the hemispheres dynamically couple or uncouple their processing as a function of task complexity.

Presentation of words to separate hemispheres prevents interword illusory conjunctions

We tested the hypothesis that division of inputs between the hemispheres could prevent interword letter migrations in the form of illusory conjunctions. The task was to decide whether a centrally-presented consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) target word matched one of four CVC words presented to a single hemisphere or divided between the hemispheres in a subsequent test display. During half of the target-absent trials, known as conjunction trials, letters from two separate words (e.g., "tag" and "cop") in the test display could be mistaken for a target word (e.g., "top"). For the other half of the target-absent trails, the test display did not match any target consonants (Experiment 1, N = 16) or it matched one target consonant (Experiment 2, N = 29), the latter constituting true "feature" trials. Bi- as compared to unihemispheric presentation significantly reduced the number of conjunction, but not feature, errors. Illusory conjunctions did not occur when the words were presented to separate hemispheres.

The dynamics of interhemispheric collaboration and hemispheric control

This article reviews recent models of how the two hemispheres collaborate to facilitate efficient information processing. The strengths and weaknesses of behavioral techniques and structural and functional neuroimaging techniques are considered as they apply to these problems. The role of the corpus callosum as an equilibrator of activation between the two hemispheres is discussed and linked with its role as a dynamic modulator for the mobilization of hemispheric resources. Issues related to metacontrol and dynamic fluctuations in hemispheric control are also considered.
