Abstract
Maternal behavior in mammals encompasses a complex repertoire of activities that ensure the survival of the offspring and shape their neural and behavioral development. The laboratory rat has been employed as a classic model for investigating maternal behavior, and recently with the use of advanced techniques, the knowledge of its neural basis has been expanded significantly. However, the standard laboratory testing conditions in which rats take care of a single litter impose constraints on the study of maternal flexibility. Interestingly, the reproductive characteristics of this species, including the existence of a fertile postpartum estrus, allow us to study maternal behavior in more complex and ethologically relevant contexts, even in laboratory settings. Here we review how maternal and sexual motivations interact during the postpartum estrus, shaping the behavioral response of females according to the presence of the pups and males. Next, we describe how impregnation during the postpartum estrus creates a new reproductive context in which mothers simultaneously care for two successive litters, adapting their responses to different behavioral and physiological demands of pups. These findings illustrate the behavioral adaptability of maternal rats to pups' needs and the presence of other reinforcers, as well as its dependence on the context. In our view, future perspectives in the field, by incorporating the use of cutting-edge techniques, should analyze maternal flexibility and its neural substrates in models that incorporate complex and challenging contexts. This approach would allow a more comprehensive understanding of brain circuits involved in the adaptive and flexible nature of parenting.

Abstract
Among female rats, mating enhances neurosteroid formation in the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA; independent of peripheral steroid-secreting glands, ovaries, and adrenals). The sources/targets for these actions are not well understood. In Experiment 1, proestrous rats engaged in a mating paradigm, or did not, and the midbrains had been assessed via the Affymetrix rat genome microarrays. In Experiment 2, the influence of gonadal and adrenal glands on the expression of these genes was assessed in rats that were proestrous, ovariectomized (OVX), or OVX and adrenalectomized (ADX). The microarrays revealed 53 target genes that were significantly up-regulated (>2.0-fold change) in response to mating. Mating significantly enhanced the midbrain mRNA expression of genes involved in hormonal and trophic actions: Gh1, S100g, and Klk1b3 in proestrous, but not OVX and/or ADX, rats; Fshb in all but OVX/ADX rats; and lutenizing hormone β and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) β in all rats. Thus, mating enhances midbrain gene expression independent and dependent of peripheral glands.

Abstract
The maternal behaviour of a rat dynamically changes during the postpartum period, adjusting to the characteristics and physiological needs of the pups. This adaptation has been attributed to functional modifications in the maternal circuitry. Maternal behaviour can also flexibly adapt according to different litter compositions. Thus, mothers with two overlapping litters can concurrently take care of neonate and juvenile pups, mostly directing their attention to the newborns. We hypothesised that the maternal circuitry of these mothers would show a differential activation pattern after interacting with pups depending on the developmental stage of their offspring. Thus, we evaluated the activation of several areas of the maternal circuitry in mothers of overlapping litters, using c-Fos immunoreactivity as a marker of neuronal activation, after interacting with newborns or juveniles. The results showed that mothers with overlapping litters display different behavioural responses towards their newborn and their juvenile pups. Interestingly, these behavioural displays co-occurred with specific patterns of activation of the maternal neural circuitry. Thus, a similar expression of c-Fos was observed in some key brain areas of mothers that interacted with newborns or juveniles, such as the medial preoptic area and the nucleus accumbens, whereas a differential activation was quantified in the ventral region of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, the infralimbic and prelimbic subregions of the medial prefrontal cortex and the basolateral and medial nuclei of the amygdala. We posit that the specific profile of activation of the neural circuitry controlling maternal behaviour in mothers with overlapping litters enables dams to respond adequately to the newborn and the juvenile pups.

Abstract
In rats, successful mating during the postpartum estrus results in the temporal overlapping of successive litters within the maternal nest. Mothers with two overlapping-litters (OLM) simultaneously take care of neonate and juvenile pups; however, they mostly direct their attention to the neonates. We hypothesized that these differences reflect an adaptation to the specific characteristics and needs of the two litters and not a lack of interest in the juveniles. To test this hypothesis, we assessed the relative incentive value of newborns and juveniles for OLM in a preference test and compared it with that exhibited by mothers in early (EPM) and late (LPM) postpartum, which were raising only newborns or only juveniles, respectively. Results showed that OLM spent similar time in the newborns and juveniles compartments and did not prefer the newborns as did the EPM, however, similarly to them, OLM made more attempts to get access to the newborns than the juveniles. On the other hand, OLM and LPM did not exhibit a clear preference between the stimuli. These results indicate that both neonates and juveniles have incentive value for OLM, although these mothers invest more effort in the newborns. These results point out to a unique behavioral profile of OLM, which shows similarities with EPM and LPM on different behavioral measures. They also support the idea that motivational processes underlying maternal behavior are complex and dynamic, adapting the response of the mother to pups' needs and the context.

Abstract
This article is part of a Special Issue "Parental Care". Becoming a parent is arguably the most profound transforming experience in life. It is also inherently very emotionally and physically demanding, such that the reciprocal interaction with the young changes the brain and behavior of the parents. In this review, we examine the neurobiological mechanisms of parenting primarily discussing recent research findings in rodents and primates, especially humans. We argue that it is essential to consider parenting within a conceptual framework that recognizes the dynamics of the reciprocal mother-young relationship, including both the complexity and neuroplasticity of its underlying mechanisms. Converging research suggests that the concerted activity of a distributed network of subcortical and cortical brain structures regulates different key aspects of parenting, including the sensory analysis of infant stimuli as well as motivational, affective and cognitive processes. The interplay among these processes depends on the action of various neurotransmitters and hormones that modulate the timely and coordinated execution of caregiving responses of the maternal circuitry exquisitely attuned to the young's affect, needs and developmental stage. We conclude with a summary and a set of questions that may guide future research.

Abstract
Maternal care experienced during postnatal development predicts long-term neurobiological and behavioral outcomes. However, the cascade of behavioral changes that emerge in response to maternal care has not been elucidated. In the current study, we examine naturally occurring variation in postnatal licking/grooming (LG) in C57BL/6J mice to determine its impact on preweaning maternal and pup behavior, the weaning process, the pace of developmental change, the emergence of social behavior, and indices of anxiety-like behavior in adulthood. Our analyses indicate that lower postnatal LG is associated with truncated and more infrequent maternal behavior during the preweaning period. Moreover, compared to High LG dams, Low LG dams are observed to actively wean their offspring sooner and have offspring that play more frequently. The heightened pace of developmental change observed in offspring of Low LG dams suggests a more rapid transition to behavioral and nutritional independence, which could have implications for future reproductive strategies.

Abstract
Postpartum mating in rats gives rise to complex family units consisting of the mother and two overlapping litters. As a consequence, newborn pups of the second litter, since the moment they are born, acquire experience not only from interaction with the mother and age-matched littermates but also from interaction with older siblings. Newborn pups reared in overlapping litters (OLs) receive a different pattern of maternal stimulation compared to those reared in single litters (SL: one litter of same aged pups), as the mothers reduce some maternal behavior components and juvenile pups from the first litter develop maternal behavior. Since there is strong evidence showing that variations in maternal behavior are transmitted throughout generations, we hypothesized that the altered pattern of maternal stimulation received by OL reared females would modify their behavior during motherhood. To test this hypothesis maternal behavior, maternal aggression and experimental anxiety of dams reared under OL and SL conditions during the first postpartum week were compared. No differences were found between the groups in their maternal behavior and aggression. This result may be explained by the maternal behavior of the juveniles that could compensate for the deficits in the caregiving behaviors received by OL litters. However, a subtle temporal reorganization of the licking behavior was found in OL reared mothers, together with an increased anxiety-related behavior in the plus maze test. These results suggest dissociation in the effects provoked by early environmental alterations on different behavioral systems, and more importantly, that independently of their early family composition, both groups can cope effectively with the changing demands of the pups.

Abstract
Placentophagia is common in parturient mammals and offers physiological and behavioral advantages for mothers. In natural environments, weanlings are often present during the birth of younger siblings, but it is unknown if weanling rats are placentophagic or prefer placenta over other substances. To examine this, primiparous rats were remated during the postpartum estrus and their weanling daughters remained in the natal nest during their mother's next parturition. Continuous observation revealed that 58% of weanlings were placentophagic. To determine if this placentophagia occurs away from parturient mothers, weanling females still living in their natal nest were offered placenta, liver, or cake frosting in a novel chamber. They ingested more placenta and liver than frosting. Thus, many weanling female laboratory rats are placentophagic during the birth of younger siblings but do not selectively prefer placenta when tested outside their natal nest. Consequences of placentophagia by weanling female rats are unknown, but it may promote their alloparenting or later postpartum mothering.

Abstract
SUMMARYTo determine whether mice were limited in their capacity to absorb energy during late lactation, we attempted to increase the energy burden experienced by a group of female mice during late lactation by mating them at the postpartum oestrus, hence combining the energy demands of pregnancy and lactation. These experimental mice were therefore concurrently pregnant and lactating in their first lactation, and were followed through a normal second lactation. In a control group, females also underwent two lactations but sequentially, with the second mating after the first litter had been weaned. Maternal mass and food intake were measured throughout the first lactation, second pregnancy and second lactation. Maternal resting metabolic rate (RMR) was measured prior to the first mating and then at the peak of both the first and second lactations. Litter size and litter mass were also measured throughout both lactations. In the first lactation, experimental mice had a lower mass-independent RMR (F1,88=5.15, P=0.026) and raised significantly heavier pups (t=2.77, d.f.=32, P=0.0093) than the control mice. Experimental mice delayed implantation at the start of the second pregnancy. The extent of the delay was positively related to litter size during the first lactation (F1,19=4.58, P=0.046) and negatively related to mean pup mass (F1,19=5.78, P=0.027) in the first lactation. In the second lactation, the experimental mice gave birth to more (t=2.75, d.f.=38, P=0.0092) and lighter (t=−5.01, d.f.=38, P<0.0001) pups than did the controls in their second lactation. Maternal asymptotic daily food intake of control mice in the second lactation was significantly higher (t=−4.39, d.f.=37, P=0.0001) than that of the experimental mice and higher than that of controls during their first lactation. Despite the added burden on the experimental females during their first lactation, there was no increase in their food intake, which suggested that they might be limited by their capacity to absorb energy. However, control females appeared to be capable of increasing their asymptotic food intake beyond the supposed limits estimated previously, suggesting that the previously established limit was not a fixed central limitation on food intake. As RMR increased in parallel with the increase in food intake during the second lactation of control mice, the sustained energy intake remained at around 7.0×RMR.

Abstract
The reproductive strategy of many mammalian species that give birth to altricial young involves intense and prolonged care of their offspring. In most cases, the mother provides all nurturance, but in some cases fathers, older siblings, or unrelated conspecifics participate in parental care. The display of these behaviors by animals other than mothers is affected by numerous factors, including their sex. We herein review the literature on similarities and/or differences between male and female laboratory rodents (rats, mice, voles, gerbils, and hamsters) in their parental responsiveness and discuss how the parental behavior of males and females is influenced by hormones, developmental processes, and prior social experiences. Understanding the mechanisms that generate sex differences in the parental responsiveness of rodents may indicate how similar sex differences in parental care are generated in other mammals.

Abstract
We examined responses of adult male Mongolian gerbils to nest site and young during the hours preceding and days following birth of a litter. We found that (a) male attendance at the nest site was markedly reduced for several hours following the birth of pups; (b) this lack of contact by males with nest and pups did not result from active exclusion of males from the nest by their mates; (c) males lacking previous experience of pups, but not those familiar with pups, avoided contact with pups on the day of their birth; and (4) 3-day-old gerbil pups were attractive even to males encountering young for the first time.

Abstract
Virgin female rats display maternal behaviors after continuous exposure to pups (sensitization) that are in some respects similar to those of postpartum females. We herein provide a detailed comparison of the "nursing" and other parental behaviors of maternally sensitized virgin females and postpartum lactating dams. Ovariectomized and intact virgin females were exposed to pups until displaying maternal behavior. On the females' fourth day of maternal responsiveness, the pups were removed for 3 h and then returned, and subject-litter interactions were observed for 45 min. Behavior of maternal virgins was compared with that of lactating dams observed on day 4 postpartum interacting with either suckling pups or pups unable to suckle due to perioral anesthesia. Ovariectomy had no effect on behavior of virgins. Retrieval and licking of pups were deficient in virgins compared with lactating dams. Suckled dams showed prolonged kyphosis (upright crouched nursing), whereas nonsuckled dams displayed little kyphosis but rather were often in a hunched position over pups. Some aspects of quiescent "nursing" behaviors of virgins were surprisingly similar to those of suckled dams, including the latency to and duration of quiescence. Nonsuckling pup stimulation elicited more kyphosis in virgins than in lactating dams, which was still much less than in suckled dams. Virgins also "nursed" pups in hunched and prone postures. Differences between sensitized and postpartum females in their maternal behaviors likely reflect differences in motivation as well as sensory inputs they receive from pups. In particular, sensory regulation of "nursing" behaviors is influenced by reproductive state because nonsuckling pups elicit different postural responses in sensitized and lactating mothers.

Abstract
As in the adult lactating female, opioids disrupt (and naloxone restores), parental behavior in juvenile rats (approximately 25 days of age). Because the preoptic area regulates the display of parental behavior in lactating females, we examined its parental behavior role in the juvenile rat. At 21 days of age, juvenile rats were implanted with bilateral cannulae aimed at the preoptic area using a modified Kopf stereotaxic and extrapolating from a developing-rat brain atlas [58], and divided into two groups: Initiation and maintenance. On day 25, the initiation group received bilateral infusions of either morphine (0.50 microgram), saline (0.25 microliter), or morphine plus naloxone (0.25 microgram). Thirty minutes later, they were exposed to three 1-6-day-old pups; the maintenance group was exposed to pups until they displayed 2 consecutive days of parental behavior, then infused. Morphine disrupted parental behavior in both the initiation and Maintenance groups, and naloxone restored the behavior to control/ saline levels. Parental behavior in the juvenile animal of both sexes, therefore, is under opioid regulation that parallels the adult female.

Abstract
This paper presents the qualitative part of a project in a traditional community in East Bhutan, which, among other items, investigates the effects on child health of breastfeeding, weaning and subsequent pregnancy of the mother. Quantitative data from the project have shown that children who are weaned during a subsequent pregnancy of the mother have a reduced weight gain and an increased incidence of infectious diseases during weaning, while this is not so for children weaned from non-pregnant mothers. In-depth interviews with 35 women with experience from breastfeeding were carried out in the local language in order to obtain qualitative data regarding the processes underlying the motherś decisions during weaning. Breastfeeding was found to fulfil a valuable social function in addition to its biological and emotional properties. The breastfed child had an undebatable "right of access" to the mother's care, not only her breast, whenever it wanted. This child also assumed a status in the family in which both its vulnerability, its special needs and its value were clearly recognized. The mothers expressed a basic motivation to breastfeed "as long as possible". There were, however, important limitations as to how this was manifested in the practical weaning process. If the mother was pregnant at the time of weaning, these limitations tended to be mother-centred. Most of the women had experienced tenderness of the breasts and a reduced milk production from the start of the next pregnancy. It was believed that the breast milk of a pregnant woman could "rot" and cause disease in the child. In spite of this belief, concurrent breastfeeding and pregnancy were common, but a pregnant mother whose breastfed child got ill, e.g. with diarrhoea, would immediately stop breastfeeding. The child would thereby abruptly loose the most important protection against the negative effects of the disease, when this protection was most needed. Concurrent pregnancy and lactation are common in many areas of the poor world. This has important consequences for the health of mothers and children, and has only recently been given the attention it derserves.

Abstract
A developmental approach to the study of feeding is proposed that considers social complexity and its biological mediation as core determinants of later ingestive patterns. Evidence is presented for opioid-mediated influences of milk and its major constituents and for nonopioid-mediated channels for contact comfort. Consideration of these factors might help us better understand some of the determinants of human feeding disorders such as bulimia and anorexia nervosa.

Abstract
The latency of maternal behavior (MB) onset induced by cohabitation with pups (sensitization) increases in female and male Long-Evans rats from 24 days of age (1-2 day latency) to 42 days of age (4-5 day latency). This decline in maternal responsiveness at Day 42 did not occur in 50% of rats ("responders") which lived with their dam and younger siblings (conceived during the postpartum estrus) for either 4 or 11-18 days after their birth. In contrast to cessation of suckling at about Day 25 postpartum in the absence of a 2nd litter, when a 2nd litter was born greater than Day 26 or less than Day 26 postpartum, suckling continued for a mean of 32 and 35.5 days, respectively (and up to Day 40). Also, time spent suckling during the 10 days following the birth of the 2nd litter was more than five times as great if the 2nd litter was born with little or no delay (less than Day 26). The offspring from the 1st litter spent about 80% of the diurnal observation time in proximity to the dam and younger siblings, and instances of nurturance (retrieving, crouching, licking) toward the young littermates were observed. However, the only dam-litter interaction significantly related to subsequent maternal responsiveness by 1st litter offspring was a positive relation between the prior incidence of aggression by mothers towards juveniles and sensitization latency.

Abstract
Female musk shrews (Suncus murinus) were tested daily to examine patterns of sexual receptivity. When only mounting was used as a criterion (to avoid pregnancy), nonpregnant females remained sexually receptive to males every day for 14 consecutive days. When insemination was allowed, most females continued to copulate for the first 5 days of pregnancy. Receptivity declined markedly around Day 10 of gestation, but a few females were receptive even into late pregnancy. Lactating females copulated with males 5 and 10 days after parturition. In general, unlike most mammals studied in the laboratory, the nonpregnant female musk shrew has no behavioral estrous cycle. Musk shrews are ready to mate anytime except in mild to late pregnancy, and even then occasionally mating is found.

Abstract
The odor preferences of mother-reared and hand-reared young hares between 1-30 days of age were studied. Subjects were exposed daily to three choice tests in which the following pairs of odors were presented: home cage odor (HCO)-neutral odor (NO); HCO-strange cage odor (SCO); SCO-NO. All young strongly preferred their HCO over SCO throughout the 30-day period. HCO was preferred over NO until the age of 20 days, while avoidance of SCO was shown during the first 10 or 20 days. The same experiment conducted on postweaned hares (31-50 days of age) revealed a strong preference for SCO over both HCO and NO. These findings may be interpreted with respect to the natural history of the hare and its unusual mother-young relationship, which, in the wild, is limited to a single daily meeting for nursing. It is suggested that the highly precocial hare recognizes and prefers its home odor independently of any maternal contribution to that odor, possibly relying on odor cues from its own body to return to its nursing site. Other possible advantages of these olfactory preferences, including predation avoidance and facilitation of social relationships, are discussed.
