Susceptible period of socio-emotional development affected by constant exposure to daylight

As a diurnal experimental primate, the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) has recently contributed to numerous kinds of studies of neurobiological psychiatry as an essential pre-clinical model. The marmoset matures sexually within one or two years after birth. Thus, we can observe how the primate learns and develops psycho-cognitive functions through experiences in experimental environment for a much shorter period compared to that of humans. Longer daylight exposure may affect psychological development of children. In our research, we focus on raising marmosets under constant daylight from birth until various ages. In order to quantitatively evaluate the development of higher-ordered psychological functions, we designed a system of socio-behavioral tests and multivariate correlation analysis methods based on principal component analysis. With reference to the call and typical body movement expressed during a particular social context, we statistically inferred the emotional features of the subjects. In the current literature, we review our published results showing increased alert behaviors by constant light, and then, attempted to extend our additional analysis to seek age-dependent susceptibility to constant light. We then present the neurobiological mechanisms with reference to previous research reports. The current review suggests possible existence of a susceptible period earlier than three to five month-old in the environment-induced developmental disorder model, supposedly like attention deficit hyperactive disorders (ADHD) or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).

Effects of constant daylight exposure during early development on marmoset psychosocial behavior

Due to global industrialization, the light cycle is shifting to longer daytime. Mounting evidence indicates that social developmental disorders may correlate with longer periods of daytime in childhood. However, the exact mechanisms of this link remain unclear. To examine the impact of longer day-time on psychosocial development, we developed a novel non-human primate model, using the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) reared under constant daylight from birth. Marmosets were reared individually by human nursing under constant light (LL) during varying periods in juvenile development, and their behaviors were compared with those of normal day-night cycle (LD) marmosets by multivariate analysis based on principal component analysis (PCA). LL marmosets elicited egg-like calls (e-call) less in juvenile period, and displayed side-to-side shakes of the upper body with rapid head rotation through adulthood frequently. Based on the PCA, these behaviors were interpreted as 'alert' or 'hyperactive' states. Additionally, behavioral development of marmosets reared under constant dark (DD) was markedly different from both LD and LL marmosets, suggesting the fundamental importance of daylight-dependent neuronal and endocrine processes and entrainment by a constant 24-hour light/dark cycle on psychosocial behavior development.

Importance of early lighting conditions in maternal care by dam as well as anxiety and memory later in life of offspring

Rodent studies have revealed that the early rearing environment plays an important role in the development of stress vulnerability, memory and cognition. Although early lighting conditions (ELC) are involved in these neuronal developments through both maternal and offspring behavior, their influence has not been fully elucidated. Thus, by using Sprague-Dawley rats, we examined whether ELC affected maternal care by the dam and the subsequent neurodevelopment of the offspring. Prolonged dark phase conditions (PDC) (light/dark, 6/18 h) and prolonged light phase conditions (light/dark, 18/6 h) were administered from postnatal day 2 to postnatal day 14. Throughout this period, maternal care and the circadian rhythmicity of dams were investigated. In adolescence and adulthood of the offspring, we measured anxiety-like behavior, social interaction, object recognition memory, activity rhythm and corticosterone response to stress with hippocampal expression of N-methyl-D-aspartate and glucocorticoid receptor mRNAs. PDC altered maternal care and circadian rhythmicity in the dam compared with normal lighting conditions and prolonged light phase conditions. PDC markedly increased anxiety-like behavior, decreased social interaction and object recognition memory, and inhibited corticosterone feedback in offspring later in life. Furthermore, hippocampal levels of glucocorticoid receptor mRNA and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor 2B mRNA in rats subjected to PDC were significantly lower than in animals subjected to normal lighting conditions. In the adult offspring, the circadian rhythm of locomotor activity was not affected. These findings suggested that ELC affect mother-infant interactions and subsequently at least partially alter the neurobehavioral development of offspring.

Handling and stocking-density effects on growth rhythms of brook trout,Salvelinusfontinalis

We evaluated the effects of handling and stocking density (3 vs. 6 fish/150 L) on the growth-rate rhythms of brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis. The length of nonhandled fish was estimated with a stereo-video technique and the length and mass of handled fish was measured directly. The main effects of handling and stocking density and their interactions on growth rates were not statistically significant, whereas the main effects of time were significant, as shown by repeated measure analysis. Multifrequential periodogram analysis indicated significant infradian rhythm components of about 8 d in the relative growth rate in length and of about 5 and 11 d in the relative growth rate in mass, regardless of the treatment applied. The characteristics (period, amplitude, and phase) of the rhythms found were not altered, either by handling or by stocking density.

Adult timing after preweaning shifts of Zeitgeber in rats: crossed sensitization to time?

Preweaning albino rats were exposed from days 1 to 18 of life to successive 6-h shifts in light and temperature Zeitgebers, (1-18 rats), whereas controls (C) were raised under constant 12:12 L:D and temperature cycles. Cyclic Peak Interval performance at adulthood (100 days) showed that 1-18 rats were more accurate and sensitive to time than C subjects. These effects, which were akin to a crossed senzitization to time, were interpreted within the framework of scalar timing theory and the temporal information-processing model. They seemed not to depend upon changes in the pacemaker rate (lambda) or the memory constant K*, but to a change at the level of the decision process: 1-18 rats used a smaller response threshold than controls.
