Is prolactin related to activity and emotional reactivity in rats?

Social buffering in rats: prolactin attenuation of active interaction

Stress may result when the present environment is interpreted as threatening, and stress is known to increase the prolactin-secretory response. In the present study, rats (N=83) were exposed to a conditioned-fear paradigm (environment paired with footshock), and on testing day, rats were exposed to the experimental chamber without shock while alone (Alone n=16), with an object (Object n=17), with a euthanized conspecific (Euthanized n=16), or with a social partner (Social n=19). The control group (Control n=15) was exposed to the experimental chamber but was never shocked. The Control group had significantly lower levels of prolactin than the Alone, Object, and Euthanized groups; however, the Control group's levels of prolactin were not significantly different than that of the Social group, which was significantly lower than that for the Alone group. Social interaction decreased fear independent of the distraction provided by a stimulus in the chamber. Active touch appeared to be crucial for social buffering to occur.

The decade 1989-1998 in Spanish psychology: an analysis of research in psychobiology

In this paper, we present an analysis of the research published during the 1989-1998 decade by tenured Spanish faculty members from the area of psychobiology. Database search and direct correspondence with the 110 faculty members rendered a list of 904 psychobiological papers. Classification and analysis of these papers led to the definition of at least 70 different research trends. Topics are grouped into several specific research areas: Learning and Memory; Development and Neural Plasticity; Emotion and Stress; Ethology; Neuropsychology; Sensory Processing; and Psychopharmacology. The international dissemination of this research, published in journals of high impact index, and the increasing number of papers are two noteworthy features.

Pregnancy is associated with low fear reactions in ewes

The aims of the study were: (1) to test the influence of pregnancy on responses of ewes to several fear-eliciting situations, (2) to compare the first and latest stages of pregnancy, and (3) to investigate possible correlations between fear reactions and progesterone levels. Fear reactions of nonpregnant (NP; N=22) and pregnant (P) Ile-de-France ewes (day 40 of pregnancy: N=43; day 140 of pregnancy: N=19) were compared during three situations classically reported to induce fear in sheep: isolation, surprise, and the presence of a human. P ewes displayed significantly lower fear reactions than NP ewes when isolated and when confronted with a surprise effect combined with the appearance of a novel object. This reduction in fearfulness may be mediated principally through reduced fear of isolation. However, fear of a human remained constant despite pregnancy. Fear reactions of ewes tested during isolation on gestation day 40 or 140 did not differ, suggesting that decreased fear is not restricted to the latest stage of pregnancy. A negative correlation was found between plasma progesterone levels and fear during isolation and surprise tests of ewes with low levels of progesterone. The decrease in fearfulness during pregnancy may have some adaptative value for the survival of the young.

A conspecific attenuates prolactin responses to open-field exposure in rats

Acute exposure to a novel environment, such as an open field, generally results in a prolactin surge, while several days of exposure to the open field is often characterized by a decline in prolactin. As exposure to the open field is a psychological stressor, altering the animal's interpretation of the event should alter prolactin levels. In the present study, juvenile male and female rats were habituated to the open field for 1 or 5 days prior to testing in the chamber alone or with a same-sex conspecific. Levels of prolactin were measured across all rats, and play (pins) was recorded for animals tested with a conspecific. Five days of habituation to the chamber resulted in lower levels of prolactin and more play than 1 day of habituation. Across both conditions of habituation, testing with a conspecific caused lower levels of prolactin than testing alone. In addition, play and prolactin were negatively correlated. The presence of a conspecific in a stressful situation may have reduced stress by altering the animal's negative interpretation of the open field. Further, as the intensity of the social interaction increased (more play), prolactin levels decreased.
