Spectrophotometric determination of trace sulphate in rain and snow after preconcentration with 2-aminoperimidine on a membrane filter

An Improved Reflection Colorimeter Integrated with a Coaxial Optical-fiber Cable for Highly Sensitive Solid-phase Colorimetry Using a Membrane Filter

Highly sensitive solid-phase colorimetry for nickel ion was demonstrated using an improved reflection colorimeter equipped with a coaxial optical-fiber cable. The nickel complex with α-furil dioxime was collected on a small-size membrane filter embedded in a disposable syringe filter unit. The leading edge of the optical-fiber cable was connected to the syringe filter unit via a Luer-lock fitting, and the color intensity of the sample on the filter was evaluated accurately. The detection limit was 0.8 ng in 2.5 mL of the complex solution (0.3 μg L^-1). This improved configuration is applicable to highly sensitive on-site analysis without expensive instruments nor high laboratory skills.

A Rapid Enrichment Technique for the Ultratrace Determination of Nickel in Water Samples Using a Nanofiber-composite Membrane Filter

A new method for the rapid enrichment and highly sensitive determination of nickel ion has been developed by using a nanofiber-composite membrane filter, which was fabricated by stacking a nanofibrous material made of nylon 6 over a water-permeable membrane filter. The noncharged nickel-α-furil dioxime complex was adsorbed on a nanofibrous layer of the membrane filter under significantly higher flow rates than those used for conventional solid-phase extraction techniques. Highly sensitive determinations with detection limits at sub-parts per billion levels were achieved by enrichment from 50 mL of the complex solution, and the enrichment was completed within 3 min. The color that was developed on the membrane filter was successfully subjected to visual colorimetric analysis and quantitative determination by solid-phase spectrophotometry. In addition, colorimetric determination was feasible with a handheld spectrometer after elution of the colored agent with 50 μL of acetone. This combination of rapid enrichment and spectrometric measurement in a small-volume sample provides a useful analytical method suitable for on-site analysis, which requires neither expensive instruments nor high laboratory skills.

Determination of Sulfate Ion with 2-Aminoperimidine Hydrobromide Using an Optode Based on Tetrabromophenolphthalein Ethyl Ester Membrane

An optode method for the determination of sulfate ion was developed. The optode membrane is 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether-plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) membrane containing tetrabromophenolphthalein ethyl ester. The method is based on formation of an ion associate between the excess of 2-aminoperimidine hydrobromide (Ap) and sulfate ion in the sample solution, and detection of the concentration of the remaining Ap ion by the optode. Under the optimal conditions, a good linear relationship was found to exist between the absorbance of the optode membrane, and concentrations of sulfate ion in a concentration range from 20 to 400 μM. The developed optode method was applied to the determination of sulfate ion in environmental water samples.
