P300 from an auditory oddball task: inter-laboratory consistency

Benchmarking cEEGrid and Solid Gel-Based Electrodes to Classify Inattentional Deafness in a Flight Simulator

Transfer from experiments in the laboratory to real-life tasks is challenging due notably to the inability to reproduce the complexity of multitasking dynamic everyday life situations in a standardized lab condition and to the bulkiness and invasiveness of recording systems preventing participants from moving freely and disturbing the environment. In this study, we used a motion flight simulator to induce inattentional deafness to auditory alarms, a cognitive difficulty arising in complex environments. In addition, we assessed the possibility of two low-density EEG systems a solid gel-based electrode Enobio (Neuroelectrics, Barcelona, Spain) and a gel-based cEEGrid (TMSi, Oldenzaal, Netherlands) to record and classify brain activity associated with inattentional deafness (misses vs. hits to odd sounds) with a small pool of expert participants. In addition to inducing inattentional deafness (missing auditory alarms) at much higher rates than with usual lab tasks (34.7% compared to the usual 5%), we observed typical inattentional deafness-related activity in the time domain but also in the frequency and time-frequency domains with both systems. Finally, a classifier based on Riemannian Geometry principles allowed us to obtain more than 70% of single-trial classification accuracy for both mobile EEG, and up to 71.5% for the cEEGrid (TMSi, Oldenzaal, Netherlands). These results open promising avenues toward detecting cognitive failures in real-life situations, such as real flight.

Evaluation of a Fast Test Based on Biometric Signals to Assess Mental Fatigue at the Workplace-A Pilot Study

Non-pathological mental fatigue is a recurring, but undesirable condition among people in the fields of office work, industry, and education. This type of mental fatigue can often lead to negative outcomes, such as performance reduction and cognitive impairment in education; loss of focus and burnout syndrome in office work; and accidents leading to injuries or death in the transportation and manufacturing industries. Reliable mental fatigue assessment tools are promising in the improvement of performance, mental health and safety of students and workers, and at the same time, in the reduction of risks, accidents and the associated economic loss (e.g., medical fees and equipment reparations). The analysis of biometric (brain, cardiac, skin conductance) signals has proven to be effective in discerning different stages of mental fatigue; however, many of the reported studies in the literature involve the use of long fatigue-inducing tests and subject-specific models in their methodologies. Recent trends in the modeling of mental fatigue suggest the usage of non subject-specific (general) classifiers and a time reduction of calibration procedures and experimental setups. In this study, the evaluation of a fast and short-calibration mental fatigue assessment tool based on biometric signals and inter-subject modeling, using multiple linear regression, is presented. The proposed tool does not require fatigue-inducing tests, which allows fast setup and implementation. Electroencephalography, photopletismography, electrodermal activity, and skin temperature from 17 subjects were recorded, using an OpenBCI helmet and an Empatica E4 wristband. Correlations to self-reported mental fatigue levels (using the fatigue assessment scale) were calculated to find the best mental fatigue predictors. Three-class mental fatigue models were evaluated, and the best model obtained an accuracy of 88% using three features, β/θ (C3), and the α/θ (O2 and C3) ratios, from one minute of electroencephalography measurements. The results from this pilot study show the feasibility and potential of short-calibration procedures and inter-subject classifiers in mental fatigue modeling, and will contribute to the use of wearable devices for the development of tools oriented to the well-being of workers and students, and also in daily living activities.

Multilevel fMRI adaptation for spoken word processing in the awake dog brain

Human brains process lexical meaning separately from emotional prosody of speech at higher levels of the processing hierarchy. Recently we demonstrated that dog brains can also dissociate lexical and emotional prosodic information in human spoken words. To better understand the neural dynamics of lexical processing in the dog brain, here we used an event-related design, optimized for fMRI adaptation analyses on multiple time scales. We investigated repetition effects in dogs’ neural (BOLD) responses to lexically marked (praise) words and to lexically unmarked (neutral) words, in praising and neutral prosody. We identified temporally and anatomically distinct adaptation patterns. In a subcortical auditory region, we found both short- and long-term fMRI adaptation for emotional prosody, but not for lexical markedness. In multiple cortical auditory regions, we found long-term fMRI adaptation for lexically marked compared to unmarked words. This lexical adaptation showed right-hemisphere bias and was age-modulated in a near-primary auditory region and was independent of prosody in a secondary auditory region. Word representations in dogs’ auditory cortex thus contain more than just the emotional prosody they are typically associated with. These findings demonstrate multilevel fMRI adaptation effects in the dog brain and are consistent with a hierarchical account of spoken word processing.

A KCNJ6 gene polymorphism modulates theta oscillations during reward processing

Event related oscillations (EROs) are heritable measures of neurocognitive function that have served as useful phenotype in genetic research. A recent family genome-wide association study (GWAS) by the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) found that theta EROs during visual target detection were associated at genome-wide levels with several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including a synonymous SNP, rs702859, in the KCNJ6 gene that encodes GIRK2, a G-protein inward rectifying potassium channel that regulates excitability of neuronal networks. The present study examined the effect of the KCNJ6 SNP (rs702859), previously associated with theta ERO to targets in a visual oddball task, on theta EROs during reward processing in a monetary gambling task. The participants were 1601 adolescent and young adult offspring within the age-range of 17-25years (800 males and 801 females) from high-dense alcoholism families as well as control families of the COGA prospective study. Theta ERO power (3.5-7.5Hz, 200-500ms post-stimulus) was compared across genotype groups. ERO theta power at central and parietal regions increased as a function of the minor allele (A) dose in the genotype (AA>AG>GG) in both loss and gain conditions. These findings indicate that variations in the KCNJ6 SNP influence magnitude of theta oscillations at posterior loci during the evaluation of loss and gain, reflecting a genetic influence on neuronal circuits involved in reward-processing. Increased theta power as a function of minor allele dose suggests more efficient cognitive processing in those carrying the minor allele of the KCNJ6 SNPs. Future studies are needed to determine the implications of these genetic effects on posterior theta EROs as possible "protective" factors, or as indices of delays in brain maturation (i.e., lack of frontalization).

Genetic correlates of the development of theta event related oscillations in adolescents and young adults

The developmental trajectories of theta band (4-7Hz) event-related oscillations (EROs), a key neurophysiological constituent of the P3 response, were assessed in 2170 adolescents and young adults ages 12 to 25. The theta EROs occurring in the P3 response, important indicators of neurocognitive function, were elicited during the evaluation of task-relevant target stimuli in visual and auditory oddball tasks. Associations between the theta EROs and genotypic variants of 4 KCNJ6 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were found to vary with age, sex, scalp location, and task modality. Three of the four KCNJ6 SNPs studied here were found to be significantly associated with the same theta EROs in adults in a previous family genome wide association study. Since measures of the P3 response have been found to be a useful endophenotypes for the study of a number of clinical and behavioral disorders, studies of genetic effects on its development in adolescents and young adults may illuminate neurophysiological factors contributing to the onset of these conditions.

Deficient Event-Related Theta Oscillations in Individuals at Risk for Alcoholism: A Study of Reward Processing and Impulsivity Features

BACKGROUND

Individuals at high risk to develop alcoholism often manifest neurocognitive deficits as well as increased impulsivity. Event-related oscillations (EROs) have been used to effectively measure brain (dys)function during cognitive tasks in individuals with alcoholism and related disorders and in those at risk to develop these disorders. The current study examines ERO theta power during reward processing as well as impulsivity in adolescent and young adult subjects at high risk for alcoholism.

METHODS

EROs were recorded during a monetary gambling task (MGT) in 12-25 years old participants (N = 1821; males = 48%) from high risk alcoholic families (HR, N = 1534) and comparison low risk community families (LR, N = 287) from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA). Impulsivity scores and prevalence of externalizing diagnoses were also compared between LR and HR groups.

RESULTS

HR offspring showed lower theta power and decreased current source density (CSD) activity than LR offspring during loss and gain conditions. Younger males had higher theta power than younger females in both groups, while the older HR females showed more theta power than older HR males. Younger subjects showed higher theta power than older subjects in each comparison. Differences in topography (i.e., frontalization) between groups were also observed. Further, HR subjects across gender had higher impulsivity scores and increased prevalence of externalizing disorders compared to LR subjects.

CONCLUSIONS

As theta power during reward processing is found to be lower not only in alcoholics, but also in HR subjects, it is proposed that reduced reward-related theta power, in addition to impulsivity and externalizing features, may be related in a predisposition to develop alcoholism and related disorders.

Reward processing deficits and impulsivity in high-risk offspring of alcoholics: A study of event-related potentials during a monetary gambling task

BACKGROUND

Individuals at high risk to develop alcoholism often manifest neurocognitive deficits as well as increased impulsivity. The goal of the present study is to elucidate reward processing deficits, externalizing disorders, and impulsivity as elicited by electrophysiological, clinical and behavioral measures in subjects at high risk for alcoholism from families densely affected by alcoholism in the context of brain maturation across age groups and gender.

METHODS

Event-related potentials (ERPs) and current source density (CSD) during a monetary gambling task (MGT) were measured in 12-25 year old offspring (N=1864) of families in the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) Prospective study; the high risk (HR, N=1569) subjects were from families densely affected with alcoholism and the low risk (LR, N=295) subjects were from community families. Externalizing disorders and impulsivity scores were also compared between LR and HR groups.

RESULTS

HR offspring from older (16-25 years) male and younger (12-15 years) female subgroups showed lower P3 amplitude than LR subjects. The amplitude decrement was most prominent in HR males during the loss condition. Overall, P3 amplitude increase at anterior sites and decrease at posterior areas were seen in older compared to younger subjects, suggesting frontalization during brain maturation. The HR subgroups also exhibited hypofrontality manifested as weaker CSD activity during both loss and gain conditions at frontal regions. Further, the HR subjects had higher impulsivity scores and increased prevalence of externalizing disorders. P3 amplitudes during the gain condition were negatively correlated with impulsivity scores.

CONCLUSIONS

Older male and younger female HR offspring, compared to their LR counterparts, manifested reward processing deficits as indexed by lower P3 amplitude and weaker CSD activity, along with higher prevalence of externalizing disorders and higher impulsivity scores.

SIGNIFICANCE

Reward related P3 is a valuable measure reflecting neurocognitive dysfunction in subjects at risk for alcoholism, as well as to characterize reward processing and brain maturation across gender and age group.

Gender modulates the development of theta event related oscillations in adolescents and young adults

The developmental trajectories of theta band (4-7 Hz) event-related oscillations (EROs), a key neurophysiological constituent of the P3 response, were assessed in 2170 adolescents and young adults ages 12 to 25. These tasks call upon attentional and working memory resources. Large differences in developmental rates between males and females were found; scalp location and task modality (visual or auditory) differences within males and females were small compared to gender differences. Trajectories of interregional and intermodal correlations between ERO power values exhibited increases with age in both genders, but showed a divergence in development between auditory and visual systems during ages 16 to 21. These results are consistent with previous electrophysiological and imaging studies and provide additional temporal detail about the development of neurophysiological indices of cognitive activity. Since measures of the P3 response has been found to be a useful endophenotypes for the study of a number of clinical and behavioral disorders, studies of its development in adolescents and young adults may illuminate neurophysiological factors contributing to the onset of these conditions.

Retest reliability of individual p3 topography assessed by high density electroencephalography

BACKGROUND

Some controversy remains about the potential applicability of cognitive potentials for evaluating the cerebral activity associated with cognitive capacity. A fundamental requirement is that these neurophysiological parameters show a high level of stability over time. Previous studies have shown that the reliability of diverse parameters of the P3 component (latency and amplitude) ranges between moderate and high. However, few studies have paid attention to the retest reliability of the P3 topography in groups or individuals. Considering that changes in P3 topography have been related to different pathologies and healthy aging, the main objective of this article was to evaluate in a longitudinal study (two sessions) the reliability of P3 topography in a group and at the individual level.

RESULTS

The correlation between sessions for P3 topography in the grand average of groups was high (r = 0.977, p<0.001). The within-subject correlation values ranged from 0.626 to 0.981 (mean: 0.888). In the between-subjects topography comparisons, the correlation was always lower for comparisons between different subjects than for within-subjects correlations in the first session but not in the second session.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study shows that P3 topography is highly reliable for group analysis (comprising the same subjects) in different sessions. The results also confirmed that retest reliability for individual P3 maps is suitable for follow-up studies for a particular subject. Moreover, P3 topography appears to be a specific marker considering that the between-subjects correlations were lower than the within-subject correlations. However, P3 topography appears more similar between subjects in the second session, demonstrating that is modulated by experience. Possible clinical applications of all these results are discussed.

Do resting brain dynamics predict oddball evoked-potential?

Background

The oddball paradigm is widely applied to the investigation of cognitive function in neuroscience and in neuropsychiatry. Whether cortical oscillation in the resting state can predict the elicited oddball event-related potential (ERP) is still not clear. This study explored the relationship between resting electroencephalography (EEG) and oddball ERPs. The regional powers of 18 electrodes across delta, theta, alpha and beta frequencies were correlated with the amplitude and latency of N1, P2, N2 and P3 components of oddball ERPs. A multivariate analysis based on partial least squares (PLS) was applied to further examine the spatial pattern revealed by multiple correlations.

Results

Higher synchronization in the resting state, especially at the alpha spectrum, is associated with higher neural responsiveness and faster neural propagation, as indicated by the higher amplitude change of N1/N2 and shorter latency of P2. None of the resting quantitative EEG indices predict P3 latency and amplitude. The PLS analysis confirms that the resting cortical dynamics which explains N1/N2 amplitude and P2 latency does not show regional specificity, indicating a global property of the brain.

Conclusions

This study differs from previous approaches by relating dynamics in the resting state to neural responsiveness in the activation state. Our analyses suggest that the neural characteristics carried by resting brain dynamics modulate the earlier/automatic stage of target detection.

An adaptive reflexive processing model of neurocognitive function: supporting evidence from a large scale (n = 100) fMRI study of an auditory oddball task

Recent hemodynamic imaging studies have shown that processing of low probability task-relevant target stimuli (i.e., oddballs) and low probability task-irrelevant novel stimuli elicit widespread activity in diverse, spatially distributed cortical and subcortical systems. The nature of this distributed response supports the model that processing of salient and novel stimuli engages many brain regions regardless of whether said regions were necessary for task performance. However, these latter neuroimaging studies largely employed small sample sizes and fixed-effect analyses, limiting the characterization and inference of the results. The present study addressed these issues by collecting a large sample size (n = 100) and employed random effects statistical models. Analyses were also conducted to determine the inter-subject reliability of the hemodynamic response and the effects of gender and age on target detection and novelty processing. Group data demonstrated highly significant activation in all 34 specified regions of interest for target detection and all 24 specified regions of interest for processing of novel stimuli. Neither age nor gender systematically influenced the results. These data are discussed within the context of a model that proposes that the mammalian brain has evolved to adopt a strategy of engaging distributed neuronal systems when processing salient stimuli despite the low probability that many of these brain regions are required for successful task performance. This process may be termed 'adaptive reflexive processing.' The implications of these results for interpreting functional MRI studies are discussed.

Description of the Genetic Analysis Workshop 11 Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism

Problem 1 of Genetic Analysis Workshop 11 consists of data from a family study of the genetics of alcoholism and related traits contributed by the six centers making up the National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism sponsored by the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA). The family data included 1,214 members of 105 pedigrees ascertained for having three or more individuals affected with alcoholism. Data available to workshop participants included clinical phenotypes, personality measures, smoking behavior, event-related potentials, platelet monamine oxidase B activity, and a genome scan of 296 markers.

Genetics of event-related brain potentials in response to a semantic priming paradigm in families with a history of alcoholism

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) are altered in patients with a variety of psychiatric disorders and may represent quantitative correlates of disease liability that are more amenable to genetic analysis than disease status itself. Results of a genomewide linkage screen are presented for amplitude of the N4 and P3 components of the ERP, measured at 19 scalp locations in response to a semantic priming task for 604 individuals in 100 pedigrees ascertained as part of the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism. N4 and P3 amplitudes in response to three stimuli (nonwords, primed words [i.e., antonyms], and unprimed words) all showed significant heritabilities, the highest being.54. Both N4 and P3 showed significant genetic correlations across stimulus type at a given lead and across leads within a stimulus, indicating shared genetic influences among the traits. There were also substantial genetic correlations between the N4 and P3 amplitudes for a given lead, even across stimulus type. N4 amplitudes showed suggestive evidence of linkage in several chromosomal regions, and P3 amplitudes showed significant evidence of linkage to chromosome 5 and suggestive evidence of linkage to chromosome 4.

Classification of passive auditory event-related potentials using discriminant analysis and self-organizing feature maps

Discriminant analysis (DA) and self-organizing feature maps (SOFM) were used to classify passively evoked auditory event-related potentials (ERP) P(1), N(1), P(2) and N(2). Responses from 16 children with severe behavioral auditory perception deficits, 16 children with marked behavioral auditory perception deficits, and 14 controls were examined. Eighteen ERP amplitude parameters were selected for examination of statistical differences between the groups. Different DA methods and SOFM configurations were trained to the values. SOFM had better classification results than DA methods. Subsequently, measures on another 37 subjects that were unknown for the trained SOFM were used to test the reliability of the system. With 10-dimensional vectors, reliable classifications were obtained that matched behavioral auditory perception deficits in 96%, implying central auditory processing disorder (CAPD). The results also support the assumption that CAPD includes a 'non-peripheral' auditory processing deficit.

Cognitive event-related potentials in neuropsychological assessment

Neuropsychology is a behavioral approach to studying the brain, and an integration of neuropsychology with on-line processing measures of brain function is important for advancing the understanding of brain-behavior relationships. Cognitive event-related potentials (ERPs) are on-line processing measures that are of interest to neuropsychologists because they are linked to familiar neuropsychological test paradigms and because they have reached a degree of standardization sufficient to make them applicable in individual assessment. A selective review of cognitive ERPs is given, focusing on studies of attention in the oddball paradigm and arguing that an adequate assessment of attention is basic in understanding higher order cognitive functions. General principles for using ERP data to supplement and clarify neuropsychological analysis are discussed, and available evidence on dementia and traumatic head injury is reviewed. It is concluded that ERPs are a useful supplement to neuropsychological assessment. Although diagnostic use of ERPs must be guarded because of limited standardization and validation, information-processing analysis with ERPs may aid significantly in interpretation of behavioral data.

Joint multipoint linkage analysis of multivariate qualitative and quantitative traits. II. Alcoholism and event-related potentials

The availability of robust quantitative biological markers that are correlated with qualitative psychiatric phenotypes can potentially improve the power of linkage methods to detect quantitative-trait loci influencing psychiatric disorders. We apply a variance-component method for joint multipoint linkage analysis of multivariate discrete and continuous traits to the extended pedigree data from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism, in a bivariate analysis of qualitative alcoholism phenotypes and quantitative event-related potentials. Joint consideration of the DSM-IV diagnosis of alcoholism and the amplitude of the P300 component of the Cz event-related potential significantly increases the evidence for linkage of these traits to a chromosome 4 region near the class I alcohol dehydrogenase locus ADH3. A likelihood-ratio test for complete pleiotropy is significant, suggesting that the same quantitative-trait locus influences both risk of alcoholism and the amplitude of the P300 component.

P300 as a measure of cognitive dysfunction from occupational and environmental insults

The P300 component of the event-related brain potential (ERP) is a sensitive, non-invasive, and convenient measure of cognitive dysfunction resulting from a variety of etiological agents. Application-orientated research on using the P300 measure as a cognitive probe for a wide range of neurological and psychiatric situations has been expanding rapidly in the last decade.The aim of this paper is to preview issues of application-oriented P300 research in occupational and environment medicine. Firstly, the neurophysiological background of the P300 is outlined. Secondly, the recent findings of P300 abnormalities following various occupational and environmental exposures are overviewed. Thirdly, the empirical issues for application-oriented research such as the potential causes of variability, limitation and difficulty are summarized, with suggestion for controlling them and for future standardization. Finally, it is concluded that P300 assessments demonstrate promising possibility as a sensitive marker for general cognitive dysfunction in occupational and environmental medicine.

P300 habituation patterns: individual differences from ultradian rhythms

Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were elicited with auditory stimuli from normal subjects every 10 min. for 10 successive trial blocks to assess ultradian influences on the P300 component. Based on a theoretical analysis of the underlying relationship between background EEG activity and P300 variability, subjects were divided into two groups according to whether P300 amplitude increased or decreased initially over trial blocks. P300 amplitude habituated across trial blocks. P300 latency produced systematic cyclical variation with approximately a 90-min. period that was opposite in phase for the different subject groups. The findings suggest that ultradian rhythms contribute to P300 latency variability. The implications of the results for P300 in applied settings are discussed.

P300, alcoholism heritability, and stimulus modality

The P300 event-related brain potential (ERP) was elicited with auditory and visual stimuli from members of 13 families who were at high risk (HR) for alcoholism (father diagnosed as alcoholic) and 13 families at low risk (LR) for alcoholism. Each family consisted of a father, mother, and at least two biological children. The intrafamily member correlations (father vs. child, mother vs. child, child vs. child) for P300 amplitude were obtained for 15 electrode sites. P300 amplitude from auditory stimuli was not correlated among HR family members, but was positively correlated among LR family members. P300 amplitude from visual stimuli was positively correlated among both HR and LR family members. When taken in conjunction with previous findings, the present results suggest that P300 amplitude from auditory stimuli may not be as reliable as ERPs from visual stimuli for the assessment of alcoholism heritability.

P300 topography of amplitude/latency correlations

The correlational association from 19 electrode sites between peak amplitude and latency for the P3(00) event-related brain potential (ERP) for n = 80 homogeneous subjects was assessed using a simple auditory discrimination task. The correlation strength varied systematically across scalp topography in different ways for the various ERP components. For the target stimuli, P3 amplitude and latency were negatively correlated and most tightly coupled over the frontal-central and right medial/lateral recording sites. In contrast, the N1 produced negative correlations that were strongest over the left and right central/lateral locations; P2 demonstrated a positive correlation that was strongest frontally and centrally; N2 demonstrated a positive correlations that was strongest over the central and parietal sites. ERPs from the standard stimuli produced generally similar patterns for the P3 and P2 components, with only weak or no reliable effects observed for the N1 and N2 potentials. Taken together, the findings suggest that analysis of amplitude/latency correlational relationships can provide information about ERP component generation. Theoretical implications are discussed.

Slow brain potentials in a visual-spatial memory task: topographic distribution and inter-laboratory consistency

Slow brain electrical potentials (SPs) were investigated in a visual-spatialmemory task. Two issues were addressed: (1) the nature and topographic distribution of the potentials obtained under such conditions; and (2) the consistency of the SPs when recorded in six identically configured laboratories. Fifteen young male subjects were studied at each laboratory (total n = 90). The paradigm entailed presentations of paired-visual patterns (S1 and S2), to which subjects responded with a choice reaction time response indicating whether or not the two patterns matched. A biphasic contingent negative variation (CNV) was produced which consisted of an early symmetric component with bilateral foci at posterior temporal sites and a subsequent mid-parietal dominant wave later in the retention interval. Although the CNVs from all laboratories were similar in waveform and in topographic distribution, there were significant inter-laboratory differences in amplitude of the slow potential components. The topographic distributions of the components and the possible role of sampling effects are discussed.

Hemispheric differences for P300 amplitude from an auditory oddball task

The P3(00) event-related potential (ERP) was elicited in 80 normal, right-handed male subjects using a simple auditory stimulus discrimination task, with electroencephalographic (EEG) activity recorded at 19 electrodes. P300 amplitude was larger over the right compared to left hemisphere electrode sites primarily at anterior-medial locations (F3/4, C3/4) for both target and standard stimuli. The N100, P200, and N200 components also demonstrated several similar, albeit less robust, hemispheric asymmetries. No hemispheric effects for P300 latency were observed, with few consistent latency findings for any of the other components obtained. The results suggest that the discrimination process underlying P300 generation may originate with right frontal activation.

Cognitive and biological determinants of P300: an integrative review

The P300 event-related brain potential (ERP) is thought to reflect neuroelectric activity related to cognitive processes such as attention allocation and activation of immediate memory. However, recent studies have provided evidence that the P300 also is influenced by biological processes such as fluctuations in the arousal state of subjects. The effects of natural (circadian, ultradian, seasonal, menstrual) and environmentally induced (exercise, fatigue, drugs) state variables on the P300 are reviewed. The findings suggest that these factors contribute to P300 measures and are discussed in terms of their theoretical and applied implications.

P300 from families

The P3(00) event-related brain potential (ERP) was elicited using auditory and visual stimuli in an oddball paradigm in 10 families, each consisting of a biologically related father, mother, and 2 children. P3 amplitude and latency measures from both stimulus modalities were more highly correlated between family members than between non-family individuals. Similar effects were found for the N1, P2 and N2 components. The results support findings from twin studies suggesting that genetic factors contribute to P3 morphological characteristics.
