Abstract
Background Intra-articular administration of stanozolol has shown promising results by improving the clinical management of lameness associated with naturally-occurring osteoarthritis (OA) in horses, and by decreasing osteophyte formation and subchondral bone reaction in sheep following surgically induced OA. However, there is limited evidence on the anti-inflammatory and modulatory properties of stanozolol on articular tissues. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effects of stanozolol on chondrocyte viability and gene expression in normal equine chondrocytes and an inflammatory in vitro system of OA (interleukin-1β (IL-1β) treated chondrocytes). Results Chondrocytes from normal metacarpophalangeal joints of skeletally mature horses were exposed to four treatment groups: (1) media only (2) media+IL-1β (3) media+IL-1β + stanozolol (4) media+stanozolol. Following exposure, chondrocyte viability and the expression of catabolic, anabolic and structural genes were determined. General linear models with Dunnet’s comparisons with Bonferroni’s adjustment were performed. Cell viability was similar in all groups. Stanozolol treatment reduced gene expression of MMP-13, MMP-1, IL-6 and COX-2 in both normal and IL-1β treated chondrocytes. Stanozolol treatment reduced ADAMTS4 gene expression in normal chondrocytes. Stanozolol reduced the expression of COL2A1. Conclusions The current study demonstrates stanozolol has chondroprotective effects through downregulation of genes for pro-inflammatory/catabolic cytokines and enzymes associated with OA. However, there is no evidence of increased cartilage stimulation through upregulation of the anabolic and structural genes tested.

Abstract
Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) are performance-enhancing drugs commonly abused by atheletes. Stanozolol is a synthetic testosterone-derived anabolic steroid. Although it is well known that AAS have several side-effects, there are only few toxicological studies available on the toxic effects and mechanisms of action of stanozolol. The aim of this study was to investigate the genotoxic effects of stanozolol and to determine its effects on telomerase activity in Sprague-Dawley male rats. For this purpose, 34 male rats were divided into 5 groups as follows: i) the control group (n=5); ii) the propylene glycol (PG)-treated group (n=5); iii) the stanozolol-treated group (n=8); iv) the PG-treated group subjected to exercise (n=8); and v) the stanozolol-treated group subjected to exercise (n=8). PG is used as a solvent control in our study. Stanozolol (5 mg/kg) and PG (1 ml/kg) were injected subcutaneously 5 days/week for 28 days. After 28 days, the animals were sacrificed, and DNA damage evaluation (comet assay) and telomerase activity assays were then performed using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Telomerase activity was measured by using the TeloTAGGG Telomerase PCR ELISA PLUS kit. The results of this study revealed that stanozolol treatment induced DNA damage, while exercise exerted a protective effect. Stanozolol treatment without exercise stimulation was associated with a significant increase in telomerase activity in the PBMCs.

Abstract
Chronic skin ulcers are frequently encountered in clinical practice and are often due to very heterogeneous etiologies. Cryofibrinogenemia is an unusual cause of non-healing skin ulcers. It is a small-vessel occlusive vascular disorder that results from the precipitation of cryofibrinogens in plasma. The lack of definitive diagnostic criteria means cryofibrinogenemia remains an under-diagnosed entity that causes significant morbidity. One of the most common manifestations of cryofibrinogenemia is skin ulceration. The presence of non-healing ulcers in otherwise healthy patients with no evidence of large-vessel disease should raise the suspicion of essential cryofibrinogenemia. An important clinical feature is the presence of microlivedo, which represents short hyperpigmented linear streaks around the ulcer or even distally about the foot. Histopathologic findings are microthrombi in the dermis and not confined exclusively to the ulcerated area. Cryofibrinogenemia can be secondary to an underlying disorder, so careful investigation to exclude other etiologies is always necessary.

Abstract
Anabolic steroids have been used to treat lower extremity ulcerations, including venous and cryofibrinogenemic ulcers and lipodermatosclerosis (LDS). Yet there have been no studies to determine the severity and reversibility of side effects of anabolic steroids on liver enzymes and lipid profiles in elderly patients. We therefore evaluated, in a prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial, the extent and reversibility of abnormal liver enzymes and lipid profiles in patients with LDS and venous leg ulcers treated with stanozolol at 2 mg twice daily for up to 6 months. Follow-up laboratory testing was done for 2 months after cessation of treatment. A total of 44 patients with LDS and venous ulcers were enrolled and treated with either leg compression alone (placebo) or leg compression plus oral stanozolol 2 mg twice daily (active). Baseline and follow-up laboratory testing of liver enzymes and lipid profiles were obtained. A total of 21 active and 23 placebo patients were treated and evaluated. We measured liver enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase [AST/SGOT], alanine aminotransferase [ALT/SGPT], γ-glutamyl transferase [GGT]) and lipid profile components (high-density lipoprotein [HDL], low-density lipoprotein [LDL], total cholesterol) before, during, and after the treatment period. We found that AST/SGOT and ALT/SGPT became significantly elevated in 29% ( P = .0415 at 2 months) and 33% ( P = .0182 at 1 month) of patients treated with stanozolol or placebo, respectively, with return to baseline in the posttreatment period. Unexpectedly, 91% of patients on stanozolol developed a significant ( P < .0001) decrease in HDL levels, by as much as 37 U/L. All patients remained asymptomatic and levels returned to baseline after discontinuation of the drug. We conclude that low-dose stanozolol, 2 mg twice daily, produces asymptomatic and temporary elevation of liver transaminases and depression of the HDL level in a significant proportion of patients.

Abstract
Cryofibrinogenemia is a rare disorder in which plasma, not serum, forms a cryoprecipitate. Patients with cryofibrinogenemia may be asymptomatic, or they may have painful ulcers, purpura, livedo reticularis, Raynaud phenomenon, perniosis of the extremities, thrombosis, and arthralgia. Cryofibrinogenemia may be primary or secondary to an underlying disorder such as connective tissue disease, malignancy, infection, drugs, or thromboembolic disease. Here, we present a 41-year-old woman with a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor who underwent a Whipple procedure in 2003 followed by 2 liver transplants for hepatic metastases. Three years posttransplant, we discovered a biopsy-proven metastatic lesion in her femur. Five years posttransplant, she developed acute, severe pain in both feet, and was found to have cryofibrinogenemia despite immunosuppression post-transplant. Testing for connective tissue diseases and hematologic malignancy were negative. She was treated with high-dose prednisone, which completely resolved her symptoms. We also conducted a review of the literature via a PubMed search to summarize the association of cryofibrinogenemia with malignancy and treating cryofibrinogenemia with corticosteroids. Our study is the first reported case of cryofibrinogenemia that developed secondary to a neuroendocrine tumor posttransplant. Our report suggests that cryofibrinogenemia may occur despite immunosuppression adequate to prevent graft rejection, and that high-dose corticosteroids are an effective treatment for posttransplant cryofibrinogenemia.

Abstract
Cryofibrinogenemia is a cryoprotein that was first identified in 1955 by Korst and Kratochvil. Unlike cryoglobulin, the precipitate forms only in plasma and not in the serum. The presence of cryofibrinogen in plasma can be asymptomatic. Cryofibrinogenemia is considered a rare disorder: its prevalence varies from 0% to 7% in healthy subjects and from 8% to 13% in hospitalized patients. Nevertheless, cryofibrinogenemia, when a cryopathy is clinically suspected, has been reported in 12% to 51% of patients. Skin manifestations are usually the first signs and are usually moderate; in addition, cold intolerance, Raynaud phenomenon, purpura, or livedo reticularis often occurs. Skin necrosis, acral ulcers, and gangrene can lead to surgery and amputation. Systemic manifestations are common, and arterial or venous thrombotic events are frequent. Cryofibrinogenemia may be primary (essential) or secondary to other underlying disorders, such as carcinoma, infection, vasculitis, collagen disease, or associated with cryoglobulinemia. The histological features of cryofibrinogenemia can confirm the presence of cryofibrinogen within small and medium arteries, plus occlusive thrombotic diathesis composed of eosinophilic refractile deposits within vessel lumina. Cryofibrinogenemia is a treatable and potentially reversible disease.In moderate forms, it can be treated by simply avoiding cold temperatures. The use of corticosteroids in association with low-dose aspirin is the treatment of choice for moderate forms, although stanozolol is an alternative maintenance therapy. Immunosuppressive therapies, plasmapheresis, and/or intravenous fibrinolysis are useful at treating severe forms of cryofibrinogenemia. The use of anticoagulants is limited to the management of thrombotic events. Treatment of secondary cryofibrinogenemia involves the management of associated diseases. Regular follow-ups are needed because of the high risk of recurrence. Moreover, up to half of patients with cryofibrinogenemia considered as essential may develop lymphomas in the following years. Compared with cryoglobulinemia, less is known about cryofibrinogenemia. Its diagnosis should be considered when suggestive clinical manifestations are present and when there are specific biopsy findings. Although identification of cryofibrinogen in blood samples is simple and inexpensive, cryofibrinogenemia can be asymptomatic, and a lack of diagnosis criteria can make diagnosis difficult to confirm. This review describes the clinical manifestations and the biological and pathological features and discusses the criteria used to diagnose and manage cryofibrinogenemia.

Abstract
Developments in behavioral assessment, autonomic and/or baseline reactivity, psychopharmacology, and genetics, have contributed significantly to the assessment of performance-enhancing drugs in animal models. Particular classes of steroid hormones: androgenic steroids are of interest. Anecdotally, the performance enhancing effects of androgens are attributed to anabolic events. However, there is a discrepancy between anecdotal evidence and investigative data. While some androgen steroids may promote muscle growth (myogenesis), effects of androgens on performance enhancement are not always seen. Indeed, some effects of androgens on performance may be attributable to their psychological and cardiovascular effects. As such, we consider androgen effects in terms of their behavioral, autonomic, and neuroendocrine components. Techniques are discussed in this chapter, some of which are well established, while others have been more recently developed to study androgen action. Androgens may be considered for their positive impact, negative consequence, or psychotropic properties. Thus, this review aims to elucidate some of the effects and/or mechanisms of androgens on behavioral, autonomic, and/or neuroendocrine assessment that may underlie their controversial performance enhancing effects.

Abstract
Severe essential cryofibrinogenemia is rare in childhood, and both the diagnosis and the management are challenging for pediatricians. An 11-year-old male, who had already lost two digits following cold exposure, was referred after multiple visits to various hospitals and subsequently diagnosed as primary cryofibrinogenemia. His history revealed unresponsiveness to calcium channel blockers, acetyl salicylic acid, pentoxifylline, dextran, and steroids. Stanozolol (2 mg/day, orally) prophylaxis was initiated and no new skin lesions developed following starting this treatment. Some of the newly formed lesions at the onset of stanozolol healed.

Abstract
The acute onset of purple digits is a concerning manifestation and may represent underlying, potentially life-threatening disease. Correctly identifying the etiology of purple digits is essential to proper management, and can aid in the diagnosis of systemic disease. Multiple causes of purple digits and significant overlap in clinical presentation can make diagnosis difficult. Despite the various causes of acute purple digits in the published literature, an algorithmic approach to the evaluation and management of the most common and alarming etiologies has yet to be established. The initial step in evaluating a patient with purple digits is to determine if the cause is associated with hypoxemia or trauma. If the patient is in a stable condition, the dermatologist needs to determine if the process could be related to cold exposure such as Raynaud phenomenon, acrocyanosis, pernio, cryoglobulinemia or frostbite. If the disease occurs independent of temperature, physical examination and histological evaluation of the skin is recommended. The lack of peripheral pulses are concerning for acute arterial thrombosis from peripheral vascular disease or arterial embolism. Non-blanching skin changes on the digit that lack inflammation and microthrombosis most likely represent a bleeding or platelet abnormality; however, if microthrombi are identified a more life-threatening processes such as purpura fulminans or embolic phenomenon may be occurring. Evidence of blood vessel inflammation suggests a leukocytoclastic vasculitis. The patient with a purple blanching digit and normal pulses requires an extensive historical review to help determine the cause. This review presents an algorithmic approach to assist in the evaluation and management of the purple digit.

Abstract
Topical capsaicin is well known to reduce nociceptive pain and neurogenic inflammation by depleting substance P. Its fibrinolytic and antithrombotic effects are less well known. We report two cases of acute lipodermatosclerosis which did not respond to several conventional treatment regimens and one case of acute lobular panniculitis in a pregnant woman with venous insufficiency, who were successfully treated within a short period of 3 weeks with topical 0.075% capsaicin cream.

Abstract
Abuse of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) by members of fitness centers and others in Germany has reached alarming dimensions. The health care system provides the illegal AAS to 48.1 % of abusers. Physicians are involved in illegal prescription of AAS and monitoring of 32.1 % of AAS abusers. Besides health-threatening cardiovascular, hepatotoxic and psychiatric long-term side effects of AAS, acne occurs in about 50 % of AAS abusers and is an important clinical indicator of AAS abuse, especially in young men 18-26 years of age. Both acne conglobata and acne fulminans can be induced by AAS abuse. The dermatologist should recognize bodybuilding acne, address the AAS abuse, and warn the patient about other potential hazards.

Abstract
A 39-year-old woman developed systemic lupus erythematosus with nephropathy after a holiday in Jamaica. She was prescribed with prednisone, azathioprine and aspirin. As she was obsessed with aesthetic procedures, she decided not to take the prescription. Instead, she took her bodybuilding trainer's advice of one intramuscular injection of stanozolol for 10 weeks in order to increase her gluteus area. One week after finishing the latter regimen, there was no disease activity. Whether lupus remission in this patient was spontaneous or a consequence of stanozolol administration will remain a riddle for this fortunate outcome.

Abstract
Factor V Leiden is the most common genetic thrombophilia in people of European descent, and is important to recognize as it can have significant implications in dermatology. We report a case of a 30-year-old man who presented for evaluation and treatment of a chronic ulceration on the site of his stump following a below the knee amputation which had been performed for non-healing ulcerations. Despite a variety of treatments, his ulcer persisted. He was referred to a dermatologist who performed a biopsy that was interpreted ass non-specific, and treatment was started for pyoderma gangrenosum. Further investigation revealed a homozygous factor V Leiden mutation and cryofibrinogenemia. He was tapered off of the methylprednisolone and was improving on stanozolol. He healed well after surgery and no new ulcerations have developed. This case highlights the importance of considering this mutation in a non-healing leg ulcer.

Abstract
Androgenic-anabolic steroids (AAS) are synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone. They can exert strong effects on the human body that may be beneficial for athletic performance. A review of the literature revealed that most laboratory studies did not investigate the actual doses of AAS currently abused in the field. Therefore, those studies may not reflect the actual (adverse) effects of steroids. The available scientific literature describes that short-term administration of these drugs by athletes can increase strength and bodyweight. Strength gains of about 5-20% of the initial strength and increments of 2-5 kg bodyweight, that may be attributed to an increase of the lean body mass, have been observed. A reduction of fat mass does not seem to occur. Although AAS administration may affect erythropoiesis and blood haemoglobin concentrations, no effect on endurance performance was observed. Little data about the effects of AAS on metabolic responses during exercise training and recovery are available and, therefore, do not allow firm conclusions. The main untoward effects of short- and long-term AAS abuse that male athletes most often self-report are an increase in sexual drive, the occurrence of acne vulgaris, increased body hair and increment of aggressive behaviour. AAS administration will disturb the regular endogenous production of testosterone and gonadotrophins that may persist for months after drug withdrawal. Cardiovascular risk factors may undergo deleterious alterations, including elevation of blood pressure and depression of serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-, HDL2- and HDL3-cholesterol levels. In echocardiographic studies in male athletes, AAS did not seem to affect cardiac structure and function, although in animal studies these drugs have been observed to exert hazardous effects on heart structure and function. In studies of athletes, AAS were not found to damage the liver. Psyche and behaviour seem to be strongly affected by AAS. Generally, AAS seem to induce increments of aggression and hostility. Mood disturbances (e.g. depression, [hypo-]mania, psychotic features) are likely to be dose and drug dependent. AAS dependence or withdrawal effects (such as depression) seem to occur only in a small number of AAS users. Dissatisfaction with the body and low self-esteem may lead to the so-called 'reverse anorexia syndrome' that predisposes to the start of AAS use. Many other adverse effects have been associated with AAS misuse, including disturbance of endocrine and immune function, alterations of sebaceous system and skin, changes of haemostatic system and urogenital tract. One has to keep in mind that the scientific data may underestimate the actual untoward effects because of the relatively low doses administered in those studies, since they do not approximate doses used by illicit steroid users. The mechanism of action of AAS may differ between compounds because of variations in the steroid molecule and affinity to androgen receptors. Several pathways of action have been recognised. The enzyme 5-alpha-reductase seems to play an important role by converting AAS into dihydrotestosterone (androstanolone) that acts in the cell nucleus of target organs, such as male accessory glands, skin and prostate. Other mechanisms comprises mediation by the enzyme aromatase that converts AAS in female sex hormones (estradiol and estrone), antagonistic action to estrogens and a competitive antagonism to the glucocorticoid receptors. Furthermore, AAS stimulate erythropoietin synthesis and red cell production as well as bone formation but counteract bone breakdown. The effects on the cardiovascular system are proposed to be mediated by the occurrence of AAS-induced atherosclerosis (due to unfavourable influence on serum lipids and lipoproteins), thrombosis, vasospasm or direct injury to vessel walls, or may be ascribed to a combination of the different mechanisms. AAS-induced increment of muscle tissue can be attributed to hypertrophy and the formation of new muscle fibres, in which key roles are played by satellite cell number and ultrastructure, androgen receptors and myonuclei.

Abstract
Our understanding of wound-healing mechanisms has progressed over the past decade. Wound healing is traditionally divided into three phases--the inflammatory phase, the proliferation phase, and the remodeling phase--and involves a well-orchestrated interaction among blood vessels (platelets, macrophages, neutrophils, endothelial cells, and smooth muscle cells), epidermis (keratinocytes, melanocytes, and Langerhans cells), adnexal structures (outer root sheath cells and hair dermal papilla cells), dermis (fibroblasts and myofibroblasts), nervous system (neurons), and subcutaneous fatty layers (adipocytes). We review recent discoveries of basic and clinical aspects of wound healing including several revolutions that occurred in wound management: occlusive dressing therapy, use of living skin equivalents, and topical administration of growth factors. As we previously proposed, the use of tissue substitutes and autologous epidermal sheets led to a new concept of skin grafting through the keratinocyte activation phase in the graft healing mechanism. In this review, we also discuss a representative patient who presented with plantar wounds caused by calcaneal osteomyelitis and healed by the coverage of epidermal grafting.

Abstract
H1-type antihistamine drugs are mainstays in the management of chronic urticaria. For patients with refractory, chronic, idiopathic urticaria who have failed to benefit from conventional therapy, other safe therapeutic modalities are required. To evaluate the role of stanozolol as an adjunctive therapeutic agent with H1-antihistamine in refractory chronic idiopathic urticaria, we conducted this study. Fifty-eight patients with chronic refractory urticaria were enrolled in this trial and were randomly assigned to two groups (A and B). Patients in group A received 2 mg stanozolol twice daily along with cetrizine 10 mg daily. Patients in group B received cetrizine 10 mg daily and placebo tablets twice daily. The improvement was monitored by estimation of severity score. Of the 58 patients, 26 in group A and 24 in group B could be evaluated. At the end of 12 weeks, 17 patients in group A showed marked to complete resolution as compared to 7 patients in group B (chi-square p<0.01). The intention to treat analysis p value was a found to be <0.007. There was a highly significant decrease in mean severity score at 12 weeks (p<0.001) in group A patients. The present study demonstrated that stanozolol is an effective and safe adjuvant therapy for treatment of chronic refractory urticaria.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Venous ulcers are the most common form of leg ulcers. Venous disease has a significant impact on quality of life and work productivity. In addition, the costs associated with the long-term care of these chronic wounds are substantial. Although the exact pathogenic steps leading from venous hypertension to venous ulceration remain unclear, several hypotheses have been developed to explain the development of venous ulceration. A better understanding of the current pathophysiology of venous ulceration has led to the development of new approaches in its management. New types of wound dressings, topical and systemic therapeutic agents, surgical modalities, bioengineered tissue, matrix materials, and growth factors are all novel therapeutic options that may be used in addition to the "gold standard," compression therapy, for venous ulcers. This review discusses current aspects of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic assessment, and current therapeutic options for chronic venous insufficiency and venous ulceration. Abstract
We report a 63-year-old patient with an IgA-kappa multiple myeloma in complete remission who developed necrotic lesions on both ears and papular, purpuric lesions on his legs and cheeks. Initial differential diagnosis included perniosis and skin necrosis secondary to interferon treatment but subsequent investigation revealed cryofibrinogenaemia as the underlying cause. Stanozolol therapy, 2 mg/12 h, achieved a complete clearance of the skin lesions. Cryofibrinogenaemia is a disease which can be under-diagnosed unless it is considered in the work-up of a patient with thrombotic skin lesions. Stanozolol is useful as first line therapy for this disorder.

Abstract
Therapeutic plasmapheresis has been in widespread use as either a primary or adjunctive therapy in the United States since the 1960s. There are several types of plasmapheresis procedures used to treat various diseases. Plasma exchange with a centrifugal plasma separator using replacement fluid such as human albumin solution is the most widely used method in the United States. Other forms of plasmapheresis include membrane plasma separation, membrane fractionation, cryofiltration apheresis, immunoadsorption, and chemical affinity column pheresis. Therapeutic plasmapheresis has been used for the treatment of paraproteinemia to remove harmful paraproteins. Paraproteinemia is a disease classification in which abnormal or large amounts of plasma proteins such as cryoproteins or immunoglobulins are produced. In most cases, plasmapheresis is used in combination with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive drugs to prevent production of abnormal proteins or to treat the underlying disease. Cryoprotein-induced diseases, which include cryoglobulinemia, cryofibrinogenemia, and cold IgM antibody agglutinin with cryoglobulin properties, are a subclass of paraproteinemia. Other categories of paraproteinemia include monoclonal gammopathy, Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, hyperviscosity syndrome, multiple myeloma, light chain disease, and amyloidosis. Some of these diseases may be interrelated, and they may be associated with one another. In this review paper, we discuss the role of plasmapheresis in the specific classes of paraproteinemia in the United States, including our own experience.

Abstract
There is evidence that anabolic steroids, which are derived from testosterone and have markedly less androgenic activity, promote tissue growth and enhance tissue repair; however, the mechanisms involved in their anabolic activities remain unclear. In this report, we measured the effect of the anabolic steroid stanozolol on cell replication and collagen synthesis in cultures of adult human dermal fibroblasts. Stanozolol (0.625-5 microg per ml) had no effect on fibroblast replication and cell viability (p = 0.764) but enhanced collagen synthesis (p < 0.01) in a dose-dependent manner (r = 0.907). Stanozolol also increased (by 2-fold) the mRNA levels of alpha1 (I) and alpha1 (III) procollagen and, to a similar extent, upregulated transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) mRNA and peptide levels (p < 0.001). There was no stimulation of collagen synthesis by testosterone. The stimulatory effects of stanozolol on collagen synthesis were blocked by a TGF-beta1 anti-sense oligonucleotide, by antibodies to TGF-beta, and in dermal fibroblast cultures derived from TGF-beta1 knockout mice. We conclude that collagen synthesis is increased by the anabolic steroid stanozolol and that, for the most part, this effect is due to TGF-beta1. These findings point to a novel mechanism of action of anabolic steroids.

Abstract
We report the first case of aquagenic urticaria in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This is a rare physical urticaria not previously described in this context. The disorder proved unamenable to conventional treatment with antihistamines, but did respond dramatically to stanozolol, suggesting a novel indication for this anabolic steroid.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute lipodermatosclerosis is characterized by pain and tenderness in the medial aspect of the leg. It is thought to be the result of venous insufficiency and to be the acute counterpart of chronic lipodermatosclerosis, a hallmark of venous disease. However, there is no direct evidence linking acute lipodermatosclerosis to venous disease. OBJECTIVE Our purpose was to determine whether acute lipodermatosclerosis is associated with venous insufficiency. METHODS With air plethysmography, we determined the venous filling index, the ejection fraction, and the residual volume fraction in 15 sequential patients with acute lipodermatosclerosis. RESULTS Ten of the 15 patients (67%) had at least one abnormal result, eight (53%) had two, and two (13%) had three. In four patients (27%), abnormalities of both reflux and ejection were noted. Duplex venous ultrasonography, in two of the patients with normal results from air plethysmography, showed incompetent perforators at sites of lipodermatosclerosis. CONCLUSION Acute lipodermatosclerosis is associated with objective findings of venous insufficiency in a high percentage of patients. It is likely that this condition is the result of venous disease.
