Effect of heavy metals and mineral nutrients on forest litter respiration rate

Phytoremediation of fuel oil and lead co-contaminated soil by Chromolaena odorata in association with Micrococcus luteus

Phytoremediation is widely promoted as a cost-effective technology for treating heavy metal and total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) co-contaminated soil. This study investigated the concurrent removal of TPHs and Pb in co-contaminated soil (27,000 mg kg(-1) TPHs, 780 mg kg(-1) Pb) by growing Siam weed (Chromolaena odorata) in a pot experiment for 90 days. There were four treatments: co-contaminated soil; co-contaminated soil with C. odorata only; co-contaminated soil with C. odorata and Micrococcus luteus inoculum; and co-contaminated soil with M. luteus only. C. odorata survived and grew well in the co-contaminated soil. C. odorata with M. luteus showed the highest Pb accumulation (513.7 mg kg(-1)) and uptake (7.7 mg plant(-1)), and the highest reduction percentage of TPHs (52.2%). The higher TPH degradation in vegetated soils indicated the interaction between the rhizosphere microorganisms and plants. The results suggested that C. odorata together with M. luteus and other rhizosphere microorganisms is a promising candidate for the removal of Pb and TPHs in co-contaminated soils.

Metal and nutrient dynamics in decomposing tree litter on a metal contaminated site

In a forest on sandy, metal polluted soil, we examined effects of six tree species on litter decomposition rates and accompanied changes in metal (Cd, Zn) and nutrient (base cations, N, C) amounts. Decomposition dynamics were studied by means of a litterbag experiment lasting for 30 months. The decomposition peak occurred within the first year for all tree species, except for aspen. During litter decomposition, high metal litter types released part of their accumulated metals, whereas low metal litter types were characterized by a metal enrichment. Base cations, N and C were released from all litter types. Metal release from contaminated litter might involve risks for metal dispersion towards the soil. On the other hand, metal enrichment of uncontaminated litter may be ecologically relevant as it can be easily transported or serve as food source.

Effects of surfactants on rhizodegradation of oil in a contaminated soil

The effects of nonionic surfactants on degradation of engine oil in metal contaminated soil using Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) were investigated. Triton X-100 and Tween 80 were individually applied to test pots in which the soil had been earlier spiked with 500 mg kg(-1) of used engine oil, 500 mg kg(-1) of PbCl(2) and 50 mg kg(-1) of CdCl(2). For he application of Tween 80 to the soil, the fractions of rhizodegraded oil and the fractions of removed metals from the soil were well correlated. On the other hand, such a correlation did not exist between the fractions of rhizodegraded oil and the fractions of removed metals for the application of Triton X-100 to the soil. It was observed that Triton X-100 caused a significant decrease in basal soil respiration (BSR) which can be attributed to a reduction in microbial activity. This, in turn, resulted in a reduction of the rhizodegraded oil fraction. Tween 80 proved to be effective in the rhizodegradation of oil under aerobic conditions. Further, this surfactant seems to have the positive effect on the soil microbial population when viewed in terms of BSR.

Effects of heavy metals on nitrogen uptake by Paxillus involutus and mycorrhizal birch seedlings

The effects of the heavy metals Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb and Zn on [(14)C]methylamine and [(14)C]aminoisobutyric acid uptake were studied in the free-living fungus Paxillus involutus and in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal birch roots. The uptake of both N sources by P. involutus was inhibited by the five metals tested. However, Cu(2+) and Pb(2+) had a greater inhibitory effect. Non-competitive inhibitions were determined between heavy metals and [(14)C]methylamine uptake. [(14)C]Methylamine uptake was reduced by one third by 2 µM Cd(2+) and Cu(2+) in non-mycorrhizal roots, whereas that of mycorrhizal roots was not affected. However, it was reduced by 30 to 80% by 200 µM Cd(2+) and Cu(2+) irrespective of the mycorrhizal status. [(14)C]Aminoisobutyric acid uptake in mycorrhizal roots was not significantly affected by Cd(2+) and Cu(2+), whereas that of non-mycorrhizal roots was decreased by 77% at 200 µM Cu(2+). [(14)C]Aminoisobutyric acid uptake was 4.5 to 6 fold higher in mycorrhizal roots, compared with non-mycorrhizal roots, even under metal exposure. The high efficiency of N acquisition by mycorrhizal birch seedlings under metal exposure might be regarded as a mechanism of stress avoidance.

Effect of heavy metals and storage time on two types of forest litter: basal respiration rate and exchangeable metals

Two types of forest litter, MOR and MULL, were treated with 0 (control), 25, 100, 400, 1600, and 6400 mg kg-1 Cd, Cu, Pb, or Zn after different storage times (35, 75, and 125 days at approx 5 degreesC). Highly significant effects on respiration rate were observed for dose of heavy metals, type of litter, type of metal, and storage time. The respiration rate of untreated MULL litter was lower than that of untreated MOR in all incubations, and the slope of the relation to the dose of metals was steeper for MOR. Respiration rates after storage were lower than in fresh litter, and the slope of the relation between respiration rate and metal dose was less steep after storage. In the first incubation, MULL litter was more sensitive to Cd, Cu, and Pb and less sensitive to Zn than MOR litter. After 125 days of storage, no single significant effect was found in MULL litter, whereas in MOR litter all metals still inhibited respiration rate significantly. The relative toxicity of metals was similar for both litter types, and the average EC50respiration values were (mg kg-1) Cu=3880, Zn=5610, Cd=6320, and Pb=24800. The percentages of exchangeable metals (1 M NH4OAc, pH=7) in MULL litter were lower on average than in MOR litter, and the order of solubility of the metals was Cd>Zn>Pb>Cu. Storage caused no significant difference in the average percentage of exchangeable metal. The highest doses of heavy metals increased the amounts of Ca, K, Mg, and Na extracted.

Metal accumulation in arthropods near a lead/zinc smelter in Arnoldstein, Austria. I

This study reports on accumulation of lead, cadmium, copper and zinc in soil, plants and arthropod species in the vicinity of a closed-down lead/zinc smelter with a long history of pollution in Arnoldstein, Austria. Significant site-dependent metal accumulations were measured in most species, increasing in line with site contamination. Within a site, clear species-specific differences were found, even between closely related species. Within some species, developmental-, sex- and/or seasonal-specificities occurred, reflecting individual metal budgeting capabilities. Evidence for copper regulatory mechanisms appeared to be established in most cases, whereas lead, the main pollutant of the region, became heavily accumulated in some organisms. Higher levels of lead than previously reported in field surveys were detected in Carabidae and Caelifera at the most polluted site. It is recommended to take ecological and physiological parameters of species into consideration in interpreting field data on arthropod metal accumulation.
