Kinetics of heterogeneous decomposition of hydrogen peroxide with some transition metal complexes supported on silica-alumina in aqueous medium

Heterogeneously catalyzed epoxidation of vegetable oils by hydrogen peroxide represents a greener route for the production of epoxides and a thermally safer reaction route compared to the classical Prileschajew epoxidation approach. The epoxidation kinetics of the heterogeneous system formed by aluminium oxide catalyst, hydrogen peroxide and methyl oleate as a model compound was studied with semibatch experiments in laboratory scale. It was found that semibatch operation improved the performance significantly compared to classical batch operation, a low and constant volumetric flowrate of hydrogen peroxide increased the final oxirane yield considerably. A semibatch reactor model and a kinetic model were developed, featuring the reaction temperature, the reactant molar ratio, the catalyst loading and the mass flow rate as the most significant experimental parameters. The mathematical model was able to well describe the experimental data. The approach can be applied to other liquid–solid catalyst systems in future in order to optimize the semibatch operation policy for complex reaction systems.

Gold nanoparticles bifunctionalized by chemiluminescence reagent and catalyst metal complexes: synthesis and unique chemiluminescence property

Despite much progress in functionalized gold nanomaterial (GNMs), chemiluminescent (CL) functionalized GNMs with high CL efficiency are far from fully developed. In this work, we report a general strategy for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) bifunctionalized by CL reagent and catalyst metal complexes (BF-GNPs) by taking N-(aminobutyl)-N-(ethylisoluminol) (ABEI) as a model of CL reagents. The complexes of 2-[bis[2-[carboxymethyl-[2-oxo-2-(2-sulfanylethylamino)ethyl]amino]ethyl]amino]acetic acid (DTDTPA) with various metal ions, including Co(2+), Cu(2+), Pb(2+), Ni(2+), Hg(2+), Cr(3+), Eu(3+), La(3+), Gd(3+), Sm(3+), Er(3+), Dy(3+), Ce(4+), and Ce(3+), were grafted on the surface of ABEI functionalized GNPs (ABEI-GNPs) to form a series of BF-GNPs. These BF-GNPs exhibited excellent CL activity. In particular, the CL intensity of DTDTPA/Co(2+)-ABEI-GNPs was over 3 orders of magnitude higher than ABEI-GNPs. This work demonstrates for the first time that metal complexes grafted on the surface of GNPs have unique catalytic activity on the CL reaction, superior to that in the liquid phase. Such BF-GNPs may find future applications in bioassays, microchips, and molecular/cellular imaging.

Synthesis and characterization of Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes of a number of sulfadrug azodyes and their application for wastewater treatment

The azodye ligand (HL(1)) was synthesized from the coupling of sulfaguanidine diazonium salt with 2,4-dihydroxy-benzaldehyde while the two ligands, HL(2) and HL(3), were prepared by the coupling of sulfadiazine diazonium salt with salicylaldehyde (HL(2)) and 2,4-dihydroxy-benzaldehyde (HL(3)). The prepared ligands were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, (1)H NMR and mass spectra. Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes of the prepared ligands have been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques like IR, UV-Visible as well as magnetic and thermal (TG and DTA) measurements. It was found that all the ligands behave as a monobasic bidentate which coordinated to the metal center through the azo nitrogen and α-hydroxy oxygen atoms in the case of HL(1) and HL(3). HL(2) coordinated to the metal center through sulfonamide oxygen and pyrimidine nitrogen. The applications of the prepared complexes in the oxidative degradation of indigo carmine dye exhibited good catalytic activity in the presence of H2O2 as an oxidant. The reactions followed first-order kinetics and the rate constants were determined. The degradation reaction involved the catalytic action of the azo-dye complexes toward H2O2 decomposition, which can lead to the generation of HO radicals as a highly efficient oxidant attacking the target dye. The detailed kinetic studies and the mechanism of these catalytic reactions are under consideration in our group.
