Visually guided reaching with the forelimb contralateral to a "blind" hemisphere in the monkey: contribution of the cerebellum

Functional Imaging of the Cerebellum during Action Execution and Observation

We employed the ¹⁴C-deoxyglucose autoradiographic method to map the activity in the cerebellar cortex of rhesus monkeys that performed forelimb movements either in the light or in the dark and of monkeys that observed forelimb movements executed by a human experimenter. The execution of forelimb movements, both in the light and in the dark, activated the forelimb representations in the cerebellar hemispheric extensions of 1) vermian lobules IV-VI and 2) vermian lobule VIIIB, ipsilaterally to the moving forelimb. Activations in the former forelimb representation involved both a paravermal and a lateral hemispheric region. Also, Crus II posterior in the ansiform lobule (the hemispheric expansion of lobule VIIB) was activated bilaterally by execution of movements in the light but not in the dark. Action observation activated the lateral-most region of the forelimb representation in the lateral hemispheric extension of vermian lobules IV-VI, as well as the crus II posterior, bilaterally. Our results demonstrate that the cerebellar cortex, in addition to its involvement in the generation of movement, is also recruited in the perception of observed movements. Moreover, our findings suggest a modularity gradient in the primate cerebellar cortex, which progresses from unimodal (medially) to multimodal (laterally) functional areas.

Cerebellar inputs to intraparietal cortex areas LIP and MIP: functional frameworks for adaptive control of eye movements, reaching, and arm/eye/head movement coordination

Using retrograde transneuronal transfer of rabies virus in combination with a conventional tracer (cholera toxin B), we studied simultaneously direct (thalamocortical) and polysynaptic inputs to the ventral lateral intraparietal area (LIPv) and the medial intraparietal area (MIP) in nonhuman primates. We found that these areas receive major disynaptic inputs from specific portions of the cerebellar nuclei, the ventral dentate (D), and ventrolateral interpositus posterior (IP). Area LIPv receives inputs from oculomotor domains of the caudal D and IP. Area MIP is the target of projections from the ventral D (mainly middle third), and gaze- and arm-related domains of IP involved in reaching and arm/eye/head coordination. We also showed that cerebellar cortical "output channels" to MIP predominantly stem from posterior cerebellar areas (paramedian lobe/Crus II posterior, dorsal paraflocculus) that have the required connectivity for adaptive control of visual and proprioceptive guidance of reaching, arm/eye/head coordination, and prism adaptation. These findings provide important insight about the interplay between the posterior parietal cortex and the cerebellum regarding visuospatial adaptation mechanisms and visual and proprioceptive guidance of movement. They also have potential implications for clinical approaches to optic ataxia and neglect rehabilitation.

Interhemispheric transfer following callosotomy in humans: Role of the superior colliculus

It is now common knowledge that the total surgical section of the corpus callosum (CC) and of the other forebrain commissures prevents interhemispheric transfer (IT) of a host of mental functions. By contrast, IT of simple sensorimotor functions, although severely delayed, is not abolished, and an important question concerns the pathways subserving this residual IT. To answer this question we assessed visuomotor IT in split-brain patients using the Poffenberger paradigm (PP), that is, a behavioral paradigm in which simple reaction time (RT) to visual stimuli presented to the hemifield ipsilateral to the responding hand is compared to stimuli presented to the contralateral hemifield, a condition requiring an IT. We tested the possibility that the residual IT is mediated by the collicular commissure interconnecting the two sides of the superior colliculus (SC). To this purpose, we used short-wavelength visual stimuli, which in neurophysiological studies in non-human primates have been shown to be undetectable by collicular neurons. We found that, in both totally and partially callosotomised patients, IT was considerably longer with S-cone input than with L-cone input or with achromatic stimuli. This was not the case in healthy participants in whom IT was not affected by color. These data clearly show that the SC plays an important role in IT of sensorimotor information in the absence of the corpus callosum.

The intraparietal cortex: subregions involved in fixation, saccades, and in the visual and somatosensory guidance of reaching

The functional activity of the intraparietal cortex was mapped with the [14C]deoxyglucose method in monkeys performing fixation of a central visual target, saccades to visual targets, reaching in the light during fixation of a central visual target, and acoustically triggered reaching in the dark while the eyes maintained a straight ahead direction. Different subregions of the intraparietal cortical area 7 were activated by fixation, saccades to visual targets, and acoustically triggered reaching in the dark. Subregions in the ventral part of the intraparietal cortex (around the fundus of the intraparietal sulcus) were activated only during reaching in the light, in which case visual information was available to guide the moving forelimb. In contrast, subregions in the dorsal part of the intraparietal cortical area 5 were activated during both reaching in the light and the dark, in which cases somatosensory information was the only one available in common. Thus, visual guidance of reaching is associated with the ventral intraparietal cortex, whereas somatosensory guidance, based on proprioceptive information about the current forelimb position, is associated with dorsal intraparietal area 5.

14C-deoxyglucose mapping of the monkey brain during reaching to visual targets

The strategies used by the macaca monkey brain in controlling the performance of a reaching movement to a visual target have been studied by the quantitative autoradiographic 14C-DG method. Experiments on visually intact monkeys reaching to a visual target indicate that V1 and V2 convey visuomotor information to the cortex of the superior temporal and parietoccipital sulci which may encode the position of the moving forelimb, and to the cortex in the ventral part and lateral bank of the intraparietal sulcus which may encode the location of the visual target. The involvement of the medial bank of the intraparietal sulcus in proprioceptive guidance of movement is also suggested on the basis of the parallel metabolic effects estimated in this region and in the forelimb representations of the primary somatosensory and motor cortices. The network including the inferior postarcuate skeletomotor and prearcuate oculomotor cortical fields and the caudal periprincipal area 46 may participate in sensory-to-motor and oculomotor-to-skeletomotor transformations, in parallel with the medial and lateral intraparietal cortices. Experiments on split brain monkeys reaching to visual targets revealed that reaching is always controlled by the hemisphere contralateral to the moving forelimb whether it is visually intact or 'blind'. Two supplementary mechanisms compensate for the 'blindness' of the hemisphere controlling the moving forelimb. First, the information about the location of the target is derived from head and eye movements and is sent to the 'blind' hemisphere via inferior parietal cortical areas, while the information about the forelimb position is derived from proprioceptive mechanisms and is sent via the somatosensory and superior parietal cortices. Second, the cerebellar hemispheric extensions of vermian lobules V, VI and VIII, ipsilateral to the moving forelimb, combine visual and oculomotor information about the target position, relayed by the 'seeing' cerebral hemisphere, with sensorimotor information concerning cortical intended and peripheral actual movements of the forelimb, and then send this integrated information back to the motor cortex of the 'blind' hemisphere, thus enabling it to guide the contralateral forelimb to the target.

Grasping an object: one movement, several components

The visuomotor transformations for producing a grasping movement imply simultaneous control of different visual mechanisms. The object size, orientation and 3D characteristics have to be encoded for the selection of the appropriate opposition space, within which the opposition forces will be applied on the object surface. These mechanisms also have to combine with those of the transport of the hand to the object location. Finally, biomechanical constraints impose categorical visuomotor decisions for positioning the opposition space according to object changes in size, orientation and spatial location. This paper examines possible interactions between the specialized structures for visuomotor transformation and the internal model that adapts prehension to its goals.
