The most recent advance in skin sampling is the Auto Suture SQS -20 disposable stapler. It approximates and everts wound edges, placing one synthetic absorbable pin in the dermis each time the instrument handle is activated. Staple wound closure was accomplished four times faster than sutural closure of the dermis. Wounds with staple pin closure exhibit superior resistance to infection than wounds approximated by dermal sutures. Although sutures provide more immediate wound security, as measured by wound breaking strength, than dermal pins, the breaking strength of wounds subjected to either dermal pins or dermal sutures were not significantly different 14 days after wounding.

Search for a scientific basis for continuous suture closure: a 30-yr odyssey

Continuous percutaneous and dermal suture closures have an important role in the approximation of long, linear lacerations in the emergency department. This report documents the scientific basis for these continuous closure techniques. In addition, a detailed description of these surgical closure techniques is presented.

Past, present, and future for surgical needles and needle holders

During the last two decades, major advances in surgical needle and needle holder technology have markedly improved surgical wound repair. These advances include quantitative tests for surgical needle and needle holders performance, high nickel maraging stainless steels, compound curved needles, needle sharpening methods, laser-drilled holes for swages, needle:suture ratios of 1:1, and the atraumatic needle holder.

A disposable emergency wound treatment kit

Biomechanical studies in our laboratory have provided a scientific basis for selecting surgical gloves and instruments, drugs, and dressings for traumatic wound treatment. This armamentarium has been incorporated into a disposable emergency wound treatment kit for use in the emergency department. Its upper tray is for wound cleansing, while its lower tray is used for wound closure. A clinical evaluation of the kit by emergency physicians was very favorable because it saved time, eliminating the need to search for and assemble the gloves, instruments, drugs, and dressings for wound treatment.
