Normal variations of oral anatomy and common oral soft tissue lesions: evaluation and management

Examination of the oral cavity can provide significant diagnostic information regarding the general health of the patient. The oral cavity is affected by a multitude of pathologic conditions of variable cause and significance; however, there are numerous normal variations of oral soft tissue structures that may resemble a pathologic state. Understanding these variations assists practitioners to discriminate between normal versus abnormal findings and determine the appropriate course of management, if necessary.

Lingual thyroid in a young female: role of imaging

A 12-year-old girl presented with dysphagia and a feeling of fullness in the throat. On examination a midline smooth, rubbery and reddish mass was seen at the base of the tongue, which moved with deglutination and protrusion of the tongue. A thyroid function test was within normal limits. On ultrasonography, absences of thyroid gland in its normal position with a smooth-contoured, round-shaped nodular mass at the tongue base with internal vascularity within. The mass was hyperdense and homogeneously enhancing on postcontrast. A clinical diagnosis of ectopic lingual was made based on the ultrasonography and CT scan features.

Radiologic-pathologic correlation of unusual lingual masses: Part I: congenital lesions

Because the tongue is superficially located and the initial manifestation of most diseases occurring there is mucosal change, lingual these lesions can be easily accessed and diagnosed without imaging analysis. Most congenital lesions of the tongue, however, can manifest as a submucosal bulge and be located in a deep portion of that organ such as its base; their true characteristics and extent may be recognized only on cross-sectional images such as those obtained by CT or MRI. In addition, because it is usually difficult to differentiate congenital lesions from other submucosal neoplasms on the basis of imaging findings alone, clinical history and physical examination should always be taken into consideration when interpreting CT and MR images of the tongue. Although the radiologic findings for congenital lesions are nonspecific, CT and MR imaging can play an important role in the diagnostic work-up of these unusual lesions. Delineation of the extent of the tumor, and recognition and understanding of the spectrum of imaging and the pathologic features of these lesions, often help narrow the differential diagnosis.
