Gas-phase ion-molecule chemistry of borate and boronate esters

Identification and counting of carbonyl and hydroxyl functionalities in protonated bifunctional analytes by using solution derivatization prior to mass spectrometric analysis via ion-molecule reactions

A mass spectrometric method has been developed for the identification of carbonyl and hydroxyl functional groups, as well as for counting the functional groups, in previously unknown protonated bifunctional oxygen-containing analytes. This method utilizes solution reduction before mass spectrometric analysis to convert the carbonyl groups to hydroxyl groups. Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of the protonated reduced analytes with neutral trimethylborate (TMB) in a FT-ICR mass spectrometer give diagnostic product ions. The reaction sequence likely involves three consecutive steps, proton abstraction from the protonated analyte by TMB, addition of the neutral analyte to the boron reagent, and elimination of a neutral methanol molecule. The number of methanol molecules eliminated upon reactions with TMB reveals the number of hydroxyl groups in the analyte. Comparison of the reactions of the original and reduced analytes reveals the presence and number of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups in the analyte.

Boronate derivatives of functionally diverse catechols: stability studies

Benzeneboronate of catecholic carboxyl methyl esters, N-acetyldopamine, coumarin and catechol estrogens were prepared as crystalline derivatives in high yield. Related catechol compounds with extra polar functional group(s) (OH, NH2) do not form or only partially form unstable cyclic boronate derivatives.

The ever-surprising chemistry of boron: enhanced acidity of phosphine.boranes

The acidity-enhancing effect of BH(3) in gas-phase phosphineboranes compared to the corresponding free phosphines is enormous, between 13 and 18 orders of magnitude in terms of ionization constants. Thus, the enhancement of the acidity of protic acids by Lewis acids usually observed in solution is also observed in the gas phase. For example, the gas-phase acidities (GA) of MePH(2) and MePH(2)BH(3) differ by about 118 kJ mol(-1) (see picture).The gas-phase acidity of a series of phosphines and their corresponding phosphineborane derivatives was measured by FT-ICR techniques. BH(3) attachment leads to a substantial increase of the intrinsic acidity of the system (from 80 to 110 kJ mol(-1)). This acidity-enhancing effect of BH(3) is enormous, between 13 and 18 orders of magnitude in terms of ionization constants. This indicates that the enhancement of the acidity of protic acids by Lewis acids usually observed in solution also occurs in the gas phase. High-level DFT calculations reveal that this acidity enhancement is essentially due to stronger stabilization of the anion with respect to the neutral species on BH(3) association, due to a stronger electron donor ability of P in the anion and better dispersion of the negative charge in the system when the BH(3) group is present. Our study also shows that deprotonation of ClCH(2)PH(2) and ClCH(2)PH(2)BH(3) is followed by chloride departure. For the latter compound deprotonation at the BH(3) group is found to be more favorable than PH(2) deprotonation, and the subsequent loss of Cl(-) is kinetically favored with respect to loss of Cl(-) in a typical S(N)2 process. Hence, ClCH(2)PH(2)BH(3) is the only phosphineborane adduct included in this study which behaves as a boron acid rather than as a phosphorus acid.

Rh-Catalyzed Enantioselective Hydrogenation of Vinyl Boronates for the Construction of Secondary Boronic Esters

[reaction: see text] Rh-catalyzed hydrogenation of prochiral vinyl boronates occurs in an enantioselective fashion in the presence of the chiral ligand Walphos 1. This transformation provides access to chiral secondary organoboronates that are not available from alkene hydroboration reactions. The chiral reaction products should be useful in organic synthesis, and preliminary experiments suggest that they may participate in one-pot amination and homologation reactions.

Ion−Molecule Reactions for the Characterization of Polyols and Polyol Mixtures by ESI/FT-ICR Mass Spectrometry

A mass spectrometric method is described for the identification and counting of hydroxyl groups in an analyte. Analytes introduced into a FT-ICR mass spectrometer and ionized by positive mode ESI were allowed to react with the neutral reagent diethylmethoxyborane. This results in derivatization of the hydroxyl groups of the analytes by replacement of a proton with a diethylborenium ion. Protonated polyols react by consecutive derivatization reactions, wherein all, or nearly all, of the hydroxyls are derivatized. The polyol derivatization products are separated by 68 mass units in the mass spectrum. This 68 Da mass shift, along with 30 Da mass shifts arising from intramolecular derivatization of the primary derivatization products, makes it easy to count the number of functional groups present in the analyte. The utility of this method for the analysis of polyols as single-component solutions, as mixtures, or in HPLC effluent (LC-MS analysis) is demonstrated.

Gas phase reactions of trimethyl borate with phosphates and their non-covalent complexes

Using a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer, trimethyl borate was allowed to react with dihydrogen phosphate, deprotonated O-phosphoserine, and a set of hydrogen bonded complexes involving dihydrogen phosphate and neutral acids (phosphoric acid, acetic acid, serine, and O-phosphoserine). The reactions show a consistent pattern in which the initial attack leads to addition with the loss of one or two CH3OH molecules. Collision-activated dissociation (CAD) experiments on the reaction products generally lead to the loss of an additional CH3OH molecule. In no case is a partner from the original hydrogen-bonded complex lost. The results indicate that the reactions lead to structures where the phosphate and its complex partner are covalently bound to the boron. For each of the reactions, rate constants were determined. In the course of CAD experiments (up to MS5), several novel borophosphate structures were identified. The work is supported by ab initio calculations on selected species.
