Abstract
In the purification process of zinc hydrometallurgy, the spectra of copper and cobalt seriously overlap in the whole band and are interfered with by the spectra of zinc and nickel, which seriously affects the detection results of copper and cobalt in zinc solutions. Aiming to address the problems of low resolution, serious overlap, and narrow characteristic wavelengths, a novel spectrophotometric method for the robust detection of trace copper and cobalt is proposed. First, the Haar, Db4, Coif3, and Sym3 wavelets are used to carry out the second-order continuous wavelet transform on the spectral signals of copper and cobalt, which improves the resolution of copper and cobalt and eliminates the background interference caused by matrix zinc signals and reagents. Then, the information ratio and separation degree are defined as optimization indexes, a multi-objective optimization model is established with the wavelet decomposition scale as a variable, and the non-inferior solution of multi-objective optimization is solved by the state transition algorithm. Finally, the optimal second-derivative spectra combined with the fine zero-crossing technique are used to establish calibration curves at zero-crossing points for the simultaneous detection of copper and cobalt. The experimental results show that the detection performance of the proposed method is far superior to the partial least squares and Kalman filtering methods. The RMSEPs of copper and cobalt are 0.098 and 0.063, the correlation coefficients are 0.9953 and 0.9971, and the average relative errors of copper and cobalt are 3.77% and 2.85%, making this method suitable for the simultaneous detection of trace copper and cobalt in high-concentration zinc solutions.

Abstract
A novel neural network adaptive filter algorithm is proposed to address the challenge of weak spectral signals and low accuracy in micro-spectrometer detection. This algorithm bases on error backpropagation (BP) and least mean square (LMS), introduces an innovative BP neural network model incorporating instantaneous error function and error factor to optimize the learning process. It establishes a network relationship through the input signal, output signal, error and step factor of the adaptive filter, and defines a training optimization learning method for this relationship. To validate the effectiveness of the algorithm, experiments were conducted on simulated noisy signals and actual spectral signals. Results show that the algorithm effectively denoises signals, reduces noise interference, and enhances signal quality, the SNR of the proposed algorithm is 3-4 dB higher than that of the traditional algorithm. The experimental spectral results showed that the proposed neural network adaptive filter algorithm combined with partial least squares regression is suitable for simultaneous detection of copper and cobalt based on ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and has broad application prospects.

Abstract
In zinc smelting solution, because the concentration of zinc is too high, the spectral signals of trace copper are masked by the spectral signals of zinc, and their spectral signals overlap, which makes it difficult to detect the concentration of trace copper. To solve this problem, a spectrophotometric method based on integrated and partition modeling is proposed. Firstly, the derivative spectra based on continuous wavelet transform are used to preprocess the spectral signal and highlight the spectral peak of copper. Then, the interval partition modeling is used to select the optimal characteristic interval of copper according to the root mean square error of prediction, and the wavelength points of the absorbance matrix are selected by correlation-coefficient threshold to improve the sensitivity and linearity of copper ions. Finally, the partial least squares integrated modeling based on the Adaboost algorithm is established by using the selected wavelength to realize the concentration detection of trace copper in the zinc liquid. Comparing the proposed method with existing regression methods, the results showed that this method can not only reduce the complexity of wavelength screening, but can also ensure the stability of detection performance. The predicted root mean square error of copper was 0.0307, the correlation coefficient was 0.9978, and the average relative error of prediction was 3.14%, which effectively realized the detection of trace copper under the background of high-concentration zinc liquid.

Abstract
Following two requests from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the revision of the tolerable upper intake level (UL) for preformed vitamin A and β-carotene. Systematic reviews of the literature were conducted for priority adverse health effects of excess vitamin A intake, namely teratogenicity, hepatotoxicity and endpoints related to bone health. Available data did not allow to address whether β-carotene could potentiate preformed vitamin A toxicity. Teratogenicity was selected as the critical effect on which to base the UL for preformed vitamin A. The Panel proposes to retain the UL for preformed vitamin A of 3000 μg RE/day for adults. This UL applies to men and women, including women of child-bearing age, pregnant and lactating women and post-menopausal women. This value was scaled down to other population groups using allometric scaling (body weight0.75), leading to ULs between 600 μg RE/day (infants 4-11 months) and 2600 μg RE/day (adolescents 15-17 years). Based on available intake data, European populations are unlikely to exceed the UL for preformed vitamin A if consumption of liver, offal and products thereof is limited to once per month or less. Women who are planning to become pregnant or who are pregnant are advised not to consume liver products. Lung cancer risk was selected as the critical effect of excess supplemental β-carotene. The available data were not sufficient and suitable to characterise a dose-response relationship and identify a reference point; therefore, no UL could be established. There is no indication that β-carotene intake from the background diet is associated with adverse health effects. Smokers should avoid consuming food supplements containing β-carotene. The use of supplemental β-carotene by the general population should be limited to the purpose of meeting vitamin A requirements.

Abstract
The study evaluated the effect of the carotenoid-rich extract from cantaloupe melon (CE) nanoencapsulated in porcine gelatin (EPG) on hepatic retinol concentration and liver damage scores in Wistar rats with obesity induced by high glycemic index and high glycemic load diet (HGLI diet). For 17 days, animals were fed the HGLI diet. They were divided into three groups and treated for 10 days [HGLI diet + water, HGLI diet + CE (12.5 mg/kg), and HGLI diet + EPG (50 mg/kg)]. The groups were evaluated for dietary intake, retinol, weight variation, hematological parameters, fasting glucose, lipid profile, hepatic retinol concentration, AST/ALT ratio, FIB-4 (Fibrosis-4 Index for Liver Fibrosis), and APRI (AST to Platelet Ratio Index) scores to evaluate the effects on the liver. Animals treated with EPG showed a lower dietary intake (p < 0.05). No significant weight change was detected in the evaluated groups (p > 0.05). The EPG-treated group had significantly higher concentrations (p < 0.05) of hepatic retinol [266 (45) μg/g] than the untreated group [186 (23.8) μg/g] and the one treated with CE [175 (8.08) μg/g]. Liver damage assessment scores did not show significant differences, but the lowest means were observed in the group treated with EPG. The nanoencapsulation of the extract rich in beta-carotene promoted reduced food consumption and increased hepatic retinol without causing significant changes in liver damage scores. Thus, EPG is a candidate for future clinical studies to evaluate the beneficial effects of treating diseases involving vitamin A deficiencies.

Abstract
Pregnancy and lactation are critical life stages with unique nutritional requirements, including for vitamin A (VA). Current DRIs for VA were published in 2001. The objective of this review was to identify and categorize evidence related to VA requirements in pregnancy and lactation since these DRIs were formulated. We searched MEDLINE and included articles according to an analytic framework of maternal VA exposure on status and health outcomes in the mother-child dyad. Intermediate and indirect evidence supports that maternal VA intakes can impact the mother's VA status, breastmilk, and health outcomes, as well as the child's VA status and select health outcomes. Food-based approaches can lead to more sustained, sufficient VA status in mothers and children. Research needs include further study linking maternal VA intakes on maternal and child VA status, and further associations with outcomes to determine intake requirements to optimize health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Better methods are needed for determining vitamin A absorption efficiency in humans to support development of dietary recommendations and to improve the accuracy of predictions of vitamin A status. OBJECTIVES We developed and evaluated a method for estimating vitamin A absorption efficiency based on compartmental modeling of theoretical data on postprandial plasma retinyl ester (RE) kinetics. METHODS We generated data on plasma RE and retinol kinetics (30 min to 8 h or 56 d, respectively) after oral administration of labeled vitamin A for 12 theoretical adults with a range of values assigned for vitamin A absorption (55-90%); we modeled all data to obtain best-fit values for absorption and other parameters using Simulation, Analysis, and Modeling software. We then modeled RE data only (16 or 10 samples), with or without added random error, and compared assigned to predicted absorption values. We also compared assigned values to areas under RE response curves (RE AUCs). RESULTS We confirmed that a unique value for vitamin A absorption cannot be identified by modeling plasma retinol tracer kinetics. However, when RE data were modeled, predicted vitamin A absorptions were within 1% of assigned values using data without error and within 12% when 5% error was included. When the sample number was reduced, predictions were still within 13% for 10 of the 12 subjects and within 23% overall. Assigned values for absorption were not correlated with RE AUC (P = 0.21). CONCLUSIONS We describe a feasible and accurate method for determining vitamin A absorption efficiency that is based on compartmental modeling of plasma RE kinetic data collected for 8 h after a test meal. This approach can be used in a clinical setting after fasting subjects consume a fat-containing breakfast meal with a known amount of vitamin A or a stable isotope label.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Better methods are needed for determining vitamin A absorption efficiency. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to measure vitamin A absorption in rats by adapting a plasma isotope ratio method previously used to determine cholesterol absorption. METHODS Male Sprague-Dawley rats [n = 14; 340 ± 16 g (mean ± SD)] received an oral tracer dose of [3H]retinyl acetate in oil plus an intravenous dose of [14C]vitamin A-labeled lymph prepared in a donor rat that had received [14C]retinyl acetate intraduodenally. Blood samples were collected on days 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 12, and plasma was analyzed for 3H and 14C; vitamin A absorption was calculated for each sample as (fraction of oral dose/fraction of intravenous dose) × 100. Radioactivity was also measured in feces and urine collected as pools on days 3, 6, 9, and 12 and in liver and remaining carcass on day 12. RESULTS Vitamin A absorption calculated as the plasma isotope ratio was >100% on day 1, 78% ± 5% on day 6, 76% ± 5% on day 9, and 74% ± 5% on day 12; fitting the data to an exponential function plus a constant predicted an absorption of 75% by day 14. Recovery of the oral dose in feces (day 0 to day 6) was low (6.2% ± 0.84%, n = 10) and the mean isotope ratio in day 9-12 urine pool was lower than that in plasma. CONCLUSIONS The plasma isotope ratio holds promise for estimating vitamin A absorption, but additional work is needed to determine how long studies need to be and if the doses should be administered simultaneously. For application of this method in humans, artificial chylomicrons labeled with a stable isotope of retinyl acetate could be used for the intravenous dose, with a different isotope required for the oral dose.

Abstract
In the zinc sulfate solution, the concentration ratio of zinc to metal ion impurities can be up to 105, which causes impurity ion signals to be severely masked by the zinc signal. In particular, nickel exhibits a strong nonlinearity. Conventional spectroscopic methods are commonly used to detect multi-component analytes with similar concentrations and require the detection component to be linear to satisfy Beer-Lambert law. In order to solve high concentration ratio and nonlinear problems, a spectrophotometric method combining the extended Kalman filter and derivative methods is proposed to simultaneously determine copper, cobalt and nickel in the zinc sulfate solution by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The derivative method developed by using continuous wavelet transform with a Haar wavelet function was applied to detect copper and cobalt in regions with wavelengths greater than 500nm, in which the absorbance of zinc and nickel changed to a fixed value, where linear regression graphs for copper and cobalt were established at zero-crossing wavelengths. Extended Kalman filter spectrophotometry is a filtering algorithm for nonlinear systems, so it was proposed to iteratively detect nickel concentration. The detection range was found to be 0.5-5mg/L for copper, 0.3-3mg/L for cobalt, and 0.6-6mg/L. The predicted root mean square error was 0.097 for copper, 0.049 for cobalt, and 0.206 for nickel. The average relative deviations of copper, cobalt, and nickel in 10 sets of mixed solutions were 3.19%, 2.23%, and 4.56%, respectively. The spectrophotometric method studied is suitable for real-time detection and control of trace amounts of copper, cobalt, and nickel in purification process of zinc hydrometallurgy, and can be applied to more fields.
