Challenges and Opportunities: Nanomaterials in Epilepsy Diagnosis

Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder characterized by a significant rate of disability. Accurate early diagnosis and precise localization of the epileptogenic zone are essential for timely intervention, seizure prevention, and personalized treatment. However, over 30% of patients with epilepsy exhibit negative results on electroencephalography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which can lead to misdiagnosis and subsequent delays in treatment. Consequently, enhancing diagnostic methodologies is imperative for effective epilepsy management. The integration of nanomaterials with biomedicine has led to the development of diagnostic tools for epilepsy. Key advancements include nanomaterial-enhanced neural electrodes, contrast agents, and biochemical sensors. Nanomaterials improve the quality of electrophysiological signals and broaden the detection range of electrodes. In imaging, functionalized magnetic nanoparticles enhance MRI sensitivity, facilitating localization of the epileptogenic zone. NIR-II nanoprobes enable tracking of seizure-related biomarkers with deep tissue penetration. Furthermore, nanomaterials enhance the sensitivity of biochemical sensors for detecting epilepsy biomarkers, which is crucial for early detection. These advancements significantly increase diagnostic sensitivity and specificity. However, challenges remain, particularly regarding biosafety, quality control, and the scalability of fabrication processes. Overcoming these obstacles is essential for successful clinical translation. Artificial-intelligence-based big data analytics can facilitate the development of diagnostic tools by screening nanomaterials with specific properties. This approach may help to address current limitations and improve both effectiveness and safety. This review explores the application of nanomaterials in the diagnosis and detection of epilepsy, with the objective of inspiring innovative ideas and strategies to enhance diagnostic effectiveness.

ELECTROCHEMICAL SENSOR FOR ANTI-DOPING IN ATHLETES

ABSTRACT Introduction: Several athletes use steroids such as nandrolone aiming at muscle hypertrophy and performance gain. The current research focused on developing a GO-TiO2 nanostructure as an electrochemical sensor for detecting Nandrolone (ND) like doping agents. Objective: Develop a graphene oxide and carbon paste-modified TiO2 nanocomposite electrode (TiO2-GO/CPE) as an electrochemical biosensor for the detection of anabolic steroids in the urine of athletes. Methods: The hydrothermal approach was employed to make GO-TiO2 nanocomposites, while the modified Hummers approach was used to make GO nanofilaments. Results: The interaction of TiO2 nanostructures with GOES resulted in the anchoring of TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of GO nanowires, as demonstrated by structural investigations of the generated nanocomposite using SEM. The DPV approach was used to investigate the electrochemical properties of an anabolic steroid sensor, which revealed a stable and selective response to anabolic steroids and superior performance to previously reported anabolic steroid sensors. Conclusion: RSD values ranged from 3.20% to 4.45%, indicating that the developed electrochemical anabolic steroid sensor can be used as a viable detection technique to identify anabolic steroids in human biological fluids. Advances on Hormones and Steroids Determination: A Review of Voltammetric Methods since 2000

This article presents advances in the electrochemical determination of hormones and steroids since 2000. A wide spectrum of techniques and working electrodes have been involved in the reported measurements in order to obtain the lowest possible limits of detection. The voltammetric and polarographic techniques, due to their sensitivity and easiness, could be used as alternatives to other, more complicated, analytical assays. Still, growing interest in designing a new construction of the working electrodes enables us to prepare new measurement procedures and obtain lower limits of detection. A brief description of the measured compounds has been presented, along with a comparison of the obtained results.

Advances in the Determination of Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids: From Standard Practices to Tailor-Designed Multidisciplinary Approaches

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs), a group of compounds frequently misused by athletes and, unfortunately, also by the general population, have lately attracted global attention; thus, significant demands for more precise, facile, and rapid AAS detection have arisen. The standard methods ordinarily used for AAS determination include liquid and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. However, good knowledge of steroid metabolism, pretreatment of samples (such as derivatization), and well-trained operators of the instruments are required, making this procedure expensive, complicated, and not routinely applicable. In the drive to meet current AAS detection demands, the scientific focus has shifted to developing novel, tailor-made approaches leading to time- and cost-effective, routine, and field-portable methods for AAS determination in various matrices, such as biological fluids, food supplements, meat, water, or other environmental components. Therefore, herein, we present a comprehensive review article covering recent advances in AAS determination, with a strong emphasis on the increasingly important role of chemically designed artificial sensors, biosensors, and antibody- and fluorescence-based methods.
