Measurement error due to self-absorption in calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Simplified LIBS-based intensity-ratio approach for concentration estimation (SLICE): an approach for elemental analysis using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy

We propose what we believe to be a new approach for elemental analysis using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). This method offers enhanced convenience and simplicity for elemental analysis as it eliminates the necessity of Boltzmann/ Saha-Boltzmann plot. It is an intensity-ratio based approach that provides several notable advantages. One of the key benefits is its ability to perform comprehensive elemental analysis using only a few spectral lines; specifically, only n + 1 emission lines are sufficient for a sample containing n elemental species. This offers a great flexibility in the choice of emission lines which do not suffer from self-absorption. Further, high accuracy can be obtained as many repeated estimations from a single measurement are possible. We demonstrate the theory and working procedure of this technique by experimentally recording the data of two samples (binary and ternary copper alloys). A nanosecond Nd:YAG pulsed laser of ∼7 ns pulse duration and 532 nm incident wavelength is used. The results are in good agreement with CF-LIBS and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).

Performance improvement of underwater LIBS qualitative and quantitative analysis by irradiating with long nanosecond pulses

Long nanosecond pulses have been proven to be efficient at enhancing underwater LIBS emission. However, the quantitative analytical capability of underwater long-pulse LIBS has yet to be further revealed. In this work, we investigated the spectral characteristics by irradiating with a laser pulse of 120 ns duration. The alkali and alkaline earth metals Li, K and Ca and the transition element Mn were selected for analysis. It is shown that obvious self-reversal structures were observed in the spectra at high concentrations, making the calibration curves saturated. Correction was performed using the approximate Voigt function fitting method, which significantly improves the linearity of the calibration curves. In addition to the target metal elements, atomic lines of the matrix elements H and O in water were also observed, which can serve as promising internal standards for quantitative analysis. A comparison of the quantification performance with and without the internal standards demonstrates that the use of the internal standards is conducive to improving the robustness of the calibration approaches with higher determination coefficients. More importantly, the underwater LIBS signal stability is improved by more than 3 times, and the prediction error for validation samples is reduced by 2-4 times. The present results suggest that long ns pulses are favorable to significantly improving the qualitative and quantitative performance of underwater single-pulse LIBS, enabling long-pulse LIBS to have great potential to be applied to underwater in situ chemical analysis.

Size-dependent synergetic seeding effects in the inspection of airborne dry nanoaerosols by LIBS

In the present paper, confined dry Cu nanoaerosols of controlled particle size are inspected under a time-resolved LIBS scheme to explore the effect of laser-particulate matter interaction upon the detection capability of airborne nanoparticulate material. Optically catapulted streams probed showed linear intensity vs mass correlation and similar signal stability which is linked to the seeding effect caused by smaller particles yielding hotter, albeit shorter plasmas. Seeding effect is demonstrated by hyperspectral time-resolved aerosol inspection, which exposes both, the interaction between multiple plasma nuclei and the discrete nature of the laser-particle interaction. Observed population/exhaustion cycles at the focal volume of the inspection laser explained the uncertainty values characteristic of LIBS inspection of aerosols. A thorough inspection of the emission in time evidenced a significantly different evolution of the intensity profile for commonly monitored Cu lines owed not only to the nature of the monitored transit and pulse energy, but also to particle size. These results suggest that the experimental settings for quantitative ultrafine aerosol inspection need to be tuned according to the target particle size and the particle density of the aerosol as seeding effects facilitates signal saturation, therefore this effect simultaneously contributes to and detracts from the analytical performance of LIBS on nanometric aerosols.
