Nematode metabolic footprints, ecological and functional indices in tropical maize-beans agro-ecosystems under different farming practices

Effect of greenhouse gas emissions on the life cycle of biomass energy production and conversion under different straw recycling modes

With the gradual growth of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during the agricultural cultivation cycle, GHG emissions specific to the production and conversion of biomass energy is becoming increasingly problematic. Current studies lack analysis of net GHG emissions generated during full life cycle of agricultural cultivation, straw use and bioenergy production. This study measures the global warming potential of biomass energy production and conversion processes under different agricultural cultivation cycle systems based on life cycle approach, accompanied by four straw treatment methods: fast pyrolysis, slow pyrolysis, flash pyrolysis and anaerobic fermentation. The demonstration of Heilongjiang Province showed that the net GHG emissions of rice and soybean over 52.39% and 101.57% higher than those of corn, respectively. The amount of standard coal saved by fast pyrolysis treatment, slow pyrolysis treatment and anaerobic fermentation treatment of straw was only 38.38%, 78.02% and 61.98% of that of flash pyrolysis treatment. The relationship between environmental pressure and economic growth was decoupled during 2011-2017 and coupled in 2017-2020. This study contributes to green production of biomass energy. The methodology in this paper can be used to account for and assess the carbon effect of the entire straw recycling chain in any region.

Ecological Diversity of Bacterial Rhizomicrobiome Core during the Growth of Selected Wheat Cultivars

One of the latest ecological concepts is the occurrence of a biased rhizosphere of microorganisms recruited mostly through interactions among various components of the rhizosphere, including plant roots and the bulk soil microbiome. We compared the diverse attributes of the core microbiome of wheat rhizosphere communities with wheat (W) and legume (L) forecrops determined by three different methods in this study (membership, composition, and functionality). The conclusions of the three methods of microbiome core definition suggest the presence of generalists, i.e., some representative microorganisms from Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Hypomicrobiaceae, Bradyrhizobiaceae, Sphingomonas sp., in the wheat rhizomicrobiome. The relative abundance of the core microbiome accounted for 0.1976% (W) and 0.334% (L)-membership method and 6.425% (W) and 4.253% (L)-composition method. Additionally, bacteria of the specialist group, such as Rhodoplanes sp., are functionally important in the rhizomicrobiome core. This small community is strongly connected with other microbes and is essential for maintenance of the sustainability of certain metabolic pathways.

Nematode assemblages, food web indices and metabolic footprints in maize-pigeon pea agro-ecosystems

Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) are important food crops in developing countries due to their multiple benefits. However, their production is constrained by plant-parasitic nematodes (PPN) which cause significant yield losses. Understanding the nematode-based soil food web structure in maize-pigeon pea agro-ecosystems will allow sustainable PPN management by improving soil health. This study explored nematode community assemblages, indices and metabolic footprints in maize-pigeon pea agroecosystems in Mbeere South, Embu County, Kenya. Soil samples were collected from Gachuriri, Irabari, Kanduu, Kangeta, Kangungi, Kaninwathiga, Karimari and Mutugu regions. The recovered nematodes were identified to the genus level. There were 41 nematode genera across the eight regions. Longidorus spp., Heterocephalobus spp., Cervidellus spp., Mesorhabditis spp. and Mononchus spp. differed significantly across the regions. Meloidogyne spp., Scutellonema spp., Rotylenchulus spp. and Pratylenchus spp. were the most prevalent genera although their abundance was not statistically different across the regions. Using the structure and enrichment indices, soil food web in Irabari was degraded, whereas the other seven regions were structured. The main energy channel of organic matter decomposition in the studied regions was dominated by fungivores. There were no differences in metabolic footprints expect for bacterivore footprint. The occurrence of Hoplolaimus spp. and Xiphinema spp. showed a negative correlation with N, C, Mg and Na. This work provides useful insights into the maize-pigeon pea nematode soil food web structure and function which can be used in improving their yields and soil health.
