Abstract
Background Maternal smoking during pregnancy (MSP) is associated with offspring smoking. However, there is still scant evidence to support the association between MSP and smoking behaviors in adult offspring. Methods This is a prospective cohort study based on the UK Biobank. Maternal smoking around birth was reported by the offspring through a questionnaire. Participants with unknown maternal smoking status were classified as having missing values. Logistic regression, linear regression and negative binomial regression models were used to estimate the associations of exposure to maternal smoking around birth with four outcomes of offspring smoking behaviors, including smoking status, age started smoking, pack years of smoking, and number of unsuccessful stop-smoking attempts. Results We included 156,604, 101,204, 96,466, and 70,308 participants in the analyses of smoking status, age started smoking, pack years of smoking, and number of unsuccessful stop-smoking attempts, respectively. After adjusted for potential confounders, MSP demonstrated significant associations with offspring smoking (OR: 1.08 [95% CI: 1.07, 1.10]), age started smoking (beta per year: -0.83 [95% CI: -0.89, -0.77]), pack years of smoking (beta per pack-year: 3.51 [95% CI: 3.28, 3.74]) and number of unsuccessful stop-smoking attempts (IRR: 1.11 [95% CI 1.09, 1.13]). Subgroup analysis showed the excessive risks for smoking status and age started smoking in females, pack years of smoking in males, and for number of unsuccessful stop-smoking attempts in the non-breastfeeding group. Conclusion The unfavorable effects of maternal smoking around birth might reach at least up to offspring's middle even older age. Smoking cessation before pregnancy should be encouraged to prevent the transmission to the next generation.

Abstract
Considerable progress has been made in elucidating the relationships between early life psychobiological and environmental risk factors and the development of tobacco addiction. However, a comprehensive understanding of the heterogeneity in tobacco addiction phenotypes requires integrating research findings. The probabilistic epigenesis meta-theory offers a valuable framework for this integration, considering systemic, multilevel, developmental, and evolutionary perspectives. In this paper, we critically review relevant research on early developmental risks associated with tobacco addiction and highlight the integrative heuristic value of the probabilistic epigenesis framework for this research. For this, we propose a four-level systems approach as an initial step towards integration, analyzing complex interactions among different levels of influence. Additionally, we explore a coaction approach to examine key interactions between early risk factors. Moreover, we introduce developmental pathways to understand interindividual differences in tobacco addiction risk during development. This integrative approach holds promise for advancing our understanding of tobacco addiction etiology and informing potentially effective intervention strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a paucity of prospective longitudinal studies examining the associations between maternal use of alcohol and tobacco during pregnancy and the risk of cannabis use in offspring. The aim of this study was to examine the association between prenatal alcohol and tobacco exposures and offspring cannabis use. METHODS Data were from the Raine Study, a longitudinal prospective birth cohort based in Western Australia. Cannabis use at 17 years of age was measured with a self-reported questionnaire developed to capture risky behaviors in adolescents. Associations between prenatal alcohol and tobacco exposures and the risk of cannabis use in offspring were examined using log-binomial regression models, computing relative risk (RR). We also computed the E-values (E) to estimate the extent of unmeasured confounding. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounders, we observed increased risks of cannabis use in offspring exposed to first trimester prenatal alcohol use (RR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.09-1.75; E = 2.10, CI:1.40) and tobacco use (RR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.08-1.86; E = 2.19, CI:1.37) as well as third trimester prenatal alcohol use (RR = 1.39, 95% CI: 1.09-1.79; E = 2.13, CI:1.40) and tobacco use (RR = 1.39, 95% CI: 1.09-1.79; E = 2.21, CI:1.34]. We also noted dose-response associations in which risk estimates in offspring increased with the level of exposures to prenatal alcohol and tobacco use. CONCLUSION These findings provide epidemiological evidence for effects of prenatal alcohol and tobacco exposures on offspring cannabis use. Although these results should be confirmed by other studies, the present study adds to the mounting evidence suggesting that women should be encouraged to abstain from alcohol and tobacco during pregnancy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To (1) compare the probability of cigarette smoking cessation for pregnant women with and without past-year mental illness by the trimester of pregnancy; and (2) examine the association between the receipt of past-year mental health treatment and prenatal cigarette smoking cessation among pregnant lifetime-smokers with mental illness. METHODS We conducted secondary analysis of data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) 2008-2014. The NSDUH included 2019 pregnant lifetime smokers aged 18-44 years, 528 of whom had a mental illness. We used multiple logistic regression to model the probability of prenatal cigarette smoking cessation. RESULTS Pregnant lifetime-smokers with mental illness had a lower rate of cigarette smoking cessation than women without mental illness (47.9% vs. 61.7%, p = 0.001). Compared to pregnant women without mental illness, pregnant women with mental illness had a significantly lower odds of smoking cessation in the first trimester (Adjusted Odds Ratio [AOR]: 0.34, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 0.18-0.66), but not in the second (AOR: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.46-1.63) and third trimesters (AOR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.51-1.72). The likelihood of quitting smoking did not differ significantly for pregnant lifetime-smokers with mental illness who received and did not receive mental health treatment (AOR: 1.69, 95% CI: 0.87-3.28). CONCLUSION Pregnant lifetime-smokers with mental illness are less likely to quit smoking than those without mental illness; overall, pregnant women tended to quit smoking as they progressed in their pregnancy. The receipt of mental health treatment was not associated with quitting smoking. Mental health care providers need to screen for cigarette use among pregnant women and strengthen smoking cessation efforts. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Pregnancy presents a unique opportunity for mental health care providers to screen for cigarette use in women with mental illness and support their smoking cessation efforts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is some compelling, though not comprehensive, epidemiological evidence which suggests an association between prenatal tobacco exposure and tobacco smoking/dependence in offspring. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the magnitude and consistency of associations reported between prenatal tobacco exposure and subsequent tobacco smoking/dependence in offspring. METHODS Using the PRISMA guideline, we systematically searched PubMed, SCOPUS, EMBASE and Psych-INFO to identify relevant studies. The methodological quality of all identified studies was checked by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Inverse variance weighted random effects meta-analysis was used to estimate pooled risk ratio (RR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI). We stratified outcomes by tobacco smoking initiation, lifetime tobacco smoking, current tobacco smoking and tobacco dependence. We further performed subgroup and leave-one-out sensitivity analyses. The protocol of this review was registered in the PROSPERO. RESULTS Twenty-six cohort and one case-control study were included in the final meta-analysis. We found elevated pooled risks of tobacco smoking initiation [RR = 2.08, (95 % CI: 1.18-3.68)], ever tobacco smoking [RR = 1.21, (95 % CI: 1.05-1.38)], current tobacco smoking [RR = 1.70, (95 % CI: 1.48-1.95)] and tobacco dependence [RR = 1.50, (95 % CI: 1.31-1.73)] in offspring exposed to maternal prenatal tobacco use compared to non-exposed. We also noted higher risk estimate of current tobacco smoking in offspring exposed to heavy prenatal tobacco smoking [RR = 1.68, (95 % CI: 1.26-2.23)] when compared to prenatal exposure to lighter tobacco use [RR = 1.39, (95 % CI: 1.09-1.78)]. There was no association observed between paternal smoking during pregnancy and tobacco smoking in offspring. CONCLUSION Offspring exposed to maternal prenatal tobacco smoking are at an increased risk of tobacco smoking/dependence, indicating that tobacco smoking cessation during gestation may be imperative to reduce these risks in offspring.
