Bioprinting of Stable Bionic Interfaces Using Piezoresistive Hydrogel Organoelectronics

Bionic tissues offer an exciting frontier in biomedical research by integrating biological cells with artificial electronics, such as sensors. One critical hurdle is the development of artificial electronics that can mechanically harmonize with biological tissues, ensuring a robust interface for effective strain transfer and local deformation sensing. In this study, a highly tissue-integrative, soft mechanical sensor fabricated from a composite piezoresistive hydrogel. The composite not only exhibits exceptional mechanical properties, with elongation at the point of fracture reaching up to 680%, but also maintains excellent biocompatibility across multiple cell types. Furthermore, the material exhibits bioadhesive qualities, facilitating stable cell adhesion to its surface. A unique advantage of the formulation is the compatibility with 3D bioprinting, an essential technique for fabricating stable interfaces. A multimaterial sensorized 3D bionic construct is successfully bioprinted, and it is compared to structures produced via hydrogel casting. In contrast to cast constructs, the bioprinted ones display a high (87%) cell viability, preserve differentiation ability, and structural integrity of the sensor-tissue interface throughout the tissue development duration of 10 d. With easy fabrication and effective soft tissue integration, this composite holds significant promise for various biomedical applications, including implantable electronics and organ-on-a-chip technologies.

Recent Advances in Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials for Healthcare Monitoring

The development of advanced technologies for the fabrication of functional nanomaterials, nanostructures, and devices has facilitated the development of biosensors for analyses. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, with unique hierarchical structures, a high surface area, and the ability to be functionalized for target detection at the surface, exhibit high potential for biosensing applications. The electronic properties, mechanical flexibility, and optical, electrochemical, and physical properties of 2D nanomaterials can be easily modulated, enabling the construction of biosensing platforms for the detection of various analytes with targeted recognition, sensitivity, and selectivity. This review provides an overview of the recent advances in 2D nanomaterials and nanostructures used for biosensor and wearable-sensor development for healthcare and health-monitoring applications. Finally, the advantages of 2D-nanomaterial-based devices and several challenges in their optimal operation have been discussed to facilitate the development of smart high-performance biosensors in the future.

2D nanomaterials for realization of flexible and wearable gas sensors: A review

Gas sensors are extensively employed for monitoring and detection of hazardous gases and vapors. Many of them are produced on rigid substrates, but flexible and wearable gas sensors are needed for intriguing usage including the internet of things (IoT) and medical devices. The materials with the greatest potential for the fabrication of flexible and wearable gas sensing devices are two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting nanomaterials, which consist of graphene and its substitutes, transition metal dichalcogenides, and MXenes. These types of materials have good mechanical flexibility, high charge carrier mobility, a large area of surface, an abundance of defects and dangling bonds, and, in certain instances adequate transparency and ease of synthesis. In this review, we have addressed the different 2D nonmaterial properties for gas sensing in the context of fabrication of flexible/wearable gas sensors. We have discussed the sensing performance of flexible/wearable gas sensors in various forms such as pristine, composite and noble metal decorated. We believe that content of this review paper is greatly useful for the researchers working in the research area of fabrication of flexible/wearable gas sensors.

Environmental and Health Impacts of Graphene and Other Two-Dimensional Materials: A Graphene Flagship Perspective

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted tremendous interest ever since the isolation of atomically thin sheets of graphene in 2004 due to the specific and versatile properties of these materials. However, the increasing production and use of 2D materials necessitate a thorough evaluation of the potential impact on human health and the environment. Furthermore, harmonized test protocols are needed with which to assess the safety of 2D materials. The Graphene Flagship project (2013-2023), funded by the European Commission, addressed the identification of the possible hazard of graphene-based materials as well as emerging 2D materials including transition metal dichalcogenides, hexagonal boron nitride, and others. Additionally, so-called green chemistry approaches were explored to achieve the goal of a safe and sustainable production and use of this fascinating family of nanomaterials. The present review provides a compact survey of the findings and the lessons learned in the Graphene Flagship.

Covalent functionalisation controlled by molecular design for the aptameric recognition of serotonin in graphene-based field-effect transistors

In the last decade, solution-gated graphene field effect transistors (GFETs) showed their versatility in the development of a miniaturized multiplexed platform for electrophysiological recordings and sensing. Due to their working mechanism, the surface functionalisation and immobilisation of receptors are pivotal to ensure the proper functioning of devices. Herein, we present a controlled covalent functionalisation strategy based on molecular design and electrochemical triggering, which provide a monolayer-like functionalisation of micro-GFET arrays retaining the electronic properties of graphenes. The functionalisation layer as a receptor was then employed as the linker for serotonin aptamer conjugation. The micro-GFET arrays display sensitivity toward the target analyte in the micromolar range in a physiological buffer (PBS 10 mM). The sensor allows the in-flow real-time monitoring of serotonin transient concentrations with fast and reversible responses.

Optimized paper-based electrochemical sensors treated in acidic media to detect carbendazim on the skin of apple and cabbage

Wearable sensors such as those made with paper are needed for non-destructive routine analysis of pesticides on plants, fruits, and vegetables. Herein we report on electrochemical sensors made with screen-printed carbon electrodes on kraft and parchment papers to detect the fungicide carbendazim. A systematic optimization was performed to find that electrochemical sensors on kraft paper treated in an acidic medium led to the highest performance, with a detection limit of 0.06 µM for carbendazim. The enhanced sensitivity for this sensor was attributed to the porous nature of kraft paper, which allowed for a large electrode surface area, and to the carboxylic groups formed during electrochemical activation. As a proof-of-concept, the electrochemical sensor attached to the skin of apple and cabbage was used to detect carbendazim with the same performance as the gold standard method, thus demonstrating that the sensor can be used in the farm and on supermarket shelves.

Ultrafast Charge Transfer 2D MoS2 /Organic Heterojunction for Sensitive Photodetector

The 2D MoS₂ with superior optoelectronic properties such as high charge mobility and broadband photoresponse has attracted broad research interests in photodetectors (PD). However, due to the atomic thin layer of 2D MoS₂ , its pure photodetectors usually suffer from inevitable drawbacks such as large dark current, and intrinsically slow response time. Herein, a new organic material BTP-4F with high mobility is successfully stacked with 2D MoS₂ film to form an integrated 2D MoS₂ /organic P-N heterojunction, facilitating efficient charge transfer as well as significantly suppressed dark current. As a result, the as-obtained 2D MoS₂ /organic (PD) has exhibited excellent response and fast response time of 332/274 µs. The analysis validated photogenerated electron transition from this monolayer MoS₂ to subsequent BTP-4F film, whereas the transited electron is originated from the A^- exciton of 2D MoS₂ by temperature-dependent photoluminescent analysis. The ultrafast charge transfer time of ≈0.24 ps measured by time-resolved transient absorption spectrum is beneficial for efficient electron-hole pair separation, greatly contributing to the obtained fast photoresponse time of 332/274 µs. This work can open a promising window to acquire low-cost and high-speed (PD).

The Covalent Functionalization of Surface-Supported Graphene: An Update

In the last decade, the use of graphene supported on solid surfaces has broadened its scope and applications, and graphene has acquire a promising role as a major component of high-performance electronic devices. In this context, the chemical modification of graphene has become essential. In particular, covalent modification offers key benefits, including controllability, stability, and the facility to be integrated into manufacturing operations. In this Review, we critically comment on the latest advances in the covalent modification of supported graphene on substrates. We analyze the different chemical modifications with special attention to radical reactions. In this context, we review the latest achievements in reactivity control, tailoring electronic properties, and introducing active functionalities. Finally, we extended our analysis to other emerging 2D materials supported on surfaces, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, transition metal oxides, and elemental analogs of graphene.

Recent Advances in Smart Hydrogels Prepared by Ionizing Radiation Technology for Biomedical Applications

Materials with excellent biocompatibility and targeting can be widely used in the biomedical field. Hydrogels are an excellent biomedical material, which are similar to living tissue and cannot affect the metabolic process of living organisms. Moreover, the three-dimensional network structure of hydrogel is conducive to the storage and slow release of drugs. Compared to the traditional hydrogel preparation technologies, ionizing radiation technology has high efficiency, is green, and has environmental protection. This technology can easily adjust mechanical properties, swelling, and so on. This review provides a classification of hydrogels and different preparation methods and highlights the advantages of ionizing radiation technology in smart hydrogels used for biomedical applications.
