Predictors of behavioral and emotional issues in children involved in custody disputes: A cross sectional study in urban Bengaluru

The Eye of the Beholder: Attitudes toward divorced parents and perception of children's happiness in Peru and Spain

Studies of divorce's effects on children have been oriented toward the parents' characteristics, ignoring their extended families. In the current study we collected data from 414 participants, both divorced parents and the children's extended families in Peru (155) and Spain (259). Participants completed a questionnaire on attitudes toward the parents, and the Short Dark Tetrad questionnaire. Multivariate tests were conducted on participants' responses, showing that negative attitudes toward parents are not very strong but that attitudes toward fathers are more negative than attitudes toward mothers. Custodial parents are perceived less negatively, and parents who share custody are perceived the least negatively. Extended family members hold more negative attitudes against parents than the parents themselves. Mothers have significantly more negative attitudes toward fathers than the fathers towards mothers. Dark traits are a significant predictor of negative attitudes toward the mother but not toward the father. The perception of unhappiness in the child was predicted by negative attitudes toward the parents. Non-parents tend to evaluate both parents more negatively compared to parents' mutual perceptions. There was an effect on dark traits, negative attitudes against parents, and perception of unhappiness in the child. Peruvians scored significantly higher in all variables.

Psychosocial Perspectives on Child Mental Health in Custody Disputes: A Qualitative Study from Urban Bengaluru

Background

Divorce has become a common contemporary phenomenon in India. In this context, the child is pulled into the vortex of parental disputes over the child's custody. The spiteful and protracted nature of these legal cases adversely affects the child's mental health. Despite the growing research in the Western context, the understanding of this phenomenon and its psychosocial impact on children in India is still in its infancy. In this background, this study aimed to explore key child mental health and related psychosocial issues in the context of child custody cases in urban India.

Method

The study explored the psychosocial complexities of child custody cases by interviewing 24 key informants using a semi-structured interview guide. The key informants comprised seven mental health professionals and seven legal professionals working in the area of child custody and access. It also included 10 parents who were contesting parties in child custody cases. They were selected using a purposive sampling method over a period of 6 months.

Results

Seven themes identified using thematic analysis were: (a) parent-child relationship and interaction; (b) parenting dynamics; (c) parental mental health issues; (d) malicious acts by parents; (e) child's adjustment to changes in life; (f) issues in the school context; and (g) child mental health issues.

Conclusion

This study highlighted the potential risk factors in the familial context that adversely affect the child's well-being and mental health in custody disputes. Therefore, interventions at the family level in the legal setting are crucial in the mitigation of these risks. In child custody cases, the coordination and liaison of child mental health professionals with the judicial system is crucial for child mental health promotion and safeguarding the best interests of the child.

Screening Children in India: Translation and Psychometric Evaluation of the Parents' Evaluation of Developmental Status and the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire

Timely screening and surveillance of children for developmental delay and social-emotional learning difficulties are essential in Low- and Middle-Income Countries like India. Screening measures like the Parents' Evaluation of Developmental Status (PEDS) and Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) are considered suitable for India due to their low cost, easy accessibility, and no training requirement for administration. However, India lacks validated screening measures, and the PEDS and SDQ have yet to be validated for children in India. The study aimed to translate the PEDS and SDQ from English to Hindi and psychometrically evaluate the same measures on children aged 4-8 years in India. The original PEDS and SDQ forms and their translations were pilot tested on 55 participants and evaluated using data from 407 children with typical development (TD) and 59 children with developmental disability (DD). Parents and teachers reported no meaningful discrepancy between the original and translated (Hindi) questionnaires. Internal consistency for the PEDS was acceptable, but unacceptable for most subscales on the SDQ, for both TD and DD samples. Test-retest reliability was poor for the PEDS but adequate for the SDQ. Results from known-group validity testing showed that the PEDS scores could be used to distinguish between the TD and DD samples. The results from this study provide further support for the use of the PEDS and SDQ in developing countries like India.
