Unicellular microalgae vs. filamentous algae for wastewater treatment and nutrient recovery

A novel integrated approach employing Desertifilum tharense BERC-3 for efficient wastewater valorization and recycling for developing peri-urban algae farming system

Peri-urban environments are significant reservoirs of wastewater, and releasing this untreated wastewater from these resources poses severe environmental and ecological threats. Wastewater mitigation through sustainable approaches is an emerging area of interest. Algae offers a promising strategy for carbon-neutral valorization and recycling of urban wastewater. Aiming to provide a proof-of-concept for complete valorization and recycling of urban wastewater in a peri-urban environment in a closed loop system, a newly isolated biocrust-forming cyanobacterium Desertifilum tharense BERC-3 was evaluated. Here, the highest growth and lipids productivity were achieved in urban wastewater compared to BG11 and synthetic wastewater. D. tharense BERC-3 showed 60-95% resource recovery efficiency and decreased total dissolved solids, chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus contents of the water by 60.37%, 81.11%, 82.75%, 87.91%, 85.13%, 85.41%, 95.87%, respectively, making it fit for agriculture as per WHO's safety limits. Soil supplementation with 2% wastewater-cultivated algae as a soil amender, along with its irrigation with post-treated wastewater, improved the nitrogen content and microbial activity of the soil by 0.3-2.0-fold and 0.5-fold, respectively. Besides, the availability of phosphorus was also improved by 1.66-fold. The complete bioprocessing pipeline offered a complete biomass utilization. This study demonstrated the first proof-of-concept of integrating resource recovery and resource recycling using cyanobacteria to develop a peri-urban algae farming system. This can lead to establishing wastewater-driven algae cultivation systems as novel enterprises for rural migrants moving to urban areas.

Modifying filamentous algae nutrient scrubbers for improved wastewater treatment and harvestability - comparison with microalgae

Algae have been well studied for their abilities to treat wastewater, and several types of treatment systems have been demonstrated at a range of scales. High Rate Algae Ponds (HRAP) are a microalgae-based system and Filamentous Algae Nutrient Scrubbers (FANS) a filamentous algae-based system. For FANS, nutrient removal rates are typically lower and more variable than HRAPs, while HRAPs have lower productivity and poor harvestability. This study investigated if modifying a FANS to mimic HRAPs (using high rate algae mesocosms HRAM), with respect to hydraulic retention time (HRT) and smaller footprint, overcomes FANS limitations, while increasing wastewater treatment and resource recovery compared to HRAPs. Biomass productivity on the FANS (10.5 ± 2.9 g m-2 d-1) and FANS with CO2 addition (19.0 ± 4.8 g m-2 d-1) were significantly higher (p < 0.01) compared to the HRAMs (6.7 ± 1.4 g m-2 d-1) and HRAMs with CO2 addition (8.1 ± 1.2 g m-2 d-1). Under phosphorus replete conditions, biomass production was significantly higher on FANS (44.8 ± 14.4 g m-2 d-1) than HRAMs (5.0 ± 0.6 g m-2 d-1). Effluent quality (nutrient removal) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) for FANS compared to HRAMS, regardless of treatment. For harvesting, FANS (2.9-41%) yielded significantly higher (p < 0.01) percentage solids with, and, without dewatering/gravity harvesting compared to the HRAM (0.04-0.11%). Modifying the operation of the FANS to mimic longer HRT of HRAMs resulted in higher areal biomass productivity and nutrient removal in the FANS than the HRAM, regardless of treatment. The use of filamentous algae on FANS greatly improved the percentage solids yield in the harvested biomass without the need for energy intensive harvesting techniques. Further investigations need to be undertaken to determine if benefits will be realised at fullscale.

Magnetic/electric field intervention on oil-rich filamentous algae production in the application of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene based wastewater treatment

Globally, the release of acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene (ABS) wastewater from numerous industries is a serious concern. Recently, oil-rich filamentous algae Tribonema sp has been grown utilizing toxic but nutrient-rich ABS effluent. Here, Tribonema sp. was cultivated under intervention of different magneto-electric combinatory fields (MCFs) (control, 0.6 V/cm, 1 h/d-1.2 V/cm, 1 h/d-0.6 V/cm, and 1 h/d-1.2 V/cm). Results showed MCF (1 h/d-0.6 V/cm) intervention increased the biomass by 9.7% (2.4 g/L) combined with high removal efficiencies (95% and 99%) of ammonium nitrogen and total phosphorus. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate increased to 82%, 6% higher than the control. Moreover, MCF of 1 h/d-0.6 V/cm significantly increased lipid and carbohydrate by 7.71% and 4.73% respectively. MCF increased premium fatty acid content such as palmitic acid (C16:0), myristic acid (C14: 0), and hexadecenoic acid (C16:1). MCF intervention also supported a diverse microbial flora, offering a favorable solution for ABS wastewater treatment.
