Abstract
Gastric cancer (GCa) is an aggressive malignancy, representing the third leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. The poor prognosis of GCa can be associated with the prevalence of peritoneal metastasis (PM). Current international and national GCa treatment guidelines only recommend palliative treatment options for patients with PM. Since the 1980s there have been multiple single arm trials, randomized controlled trials, and metanalysis investigating the use of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in patients with advanced GCa, with or without PM. Results from these studies have been encouraging, with some large-volume centers even incorporating HIPEC into their treatment algorithms for patients with advanced GCa. Additionally, there are several ongoing trials that, when completed, will increase our understanding of the efficacy of CRS & HIPEC in patients with GCa metastatic to the peritoneum. Herein we review the current evidence, ongoing trials, consensus guidelines, and future considerations regarding the use of CRS & HIPEC in patients suffering from GCa with PM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC) are at high risk of peritoneal recurrence despite perioperative chemotherapy and radical resection. This study evaluated feasibility and safety of laparoscopic D2 gastrectomy in combination with pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC). METHODS This was a prospective, controlled bi-institutional study in patients with GAC at high risk of recurrence treated with PIPAC with cisplatin and doxorubicin (PIPAC C/D) after laparoscopic D2 gastrectomy. High risk was defined as a poorly cohesive subtype with predominance of signet-ring cells, clinical stage ≥ T3 and/or ≥ N2, or positive peritoneal cytology. Peritoneal lavage fluid was collected before and after resection. Cisplatin (10.5 mg/m2) and doxorubicin (2.1 mg/m2) were aerosolized after anastomosis (flow 0.5-0.8 ml/s, maximum pressure 300 PSI). Treatment was feasible and safe if ≤ 20% had Dindo-Clavien ≥ 3b surgical complications or CTCAE ≥ 4 medical adverse events within 30 days. Secondary outcomes were length of stay (LOS), peritoneal lavage cytology, and completion of postoperative systemic chemotherapy. RESULTS Twenty-one patients were treated with a D2 gastrectomy and PIPAC C/D. The median age was 61 years (range 24-76), there were eleven female patients, and 20 patients had preoperative chemotherapy. There was no mortality. Two patients had grade 3b complications that were potentially related to PIPAC C/D (one anastomotic leakage, and one late duodenal blow-out). One patient had severe neutropenia, and nine patients had moderate pain. The LOS was 6 days (4-26). One patient had positive peritoneal lavage cytology before resection, and none were positive after. Fifteen patients had postoperative chemotherapy. CONCLUSIONS Laparoscopic D2 gastrectomy in combination with PIPAC C/D is feasible and safe.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastric cancer is one of the most aggressive malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract with a high rate of metastasis. Peritoneal metastasis occurs in up to 60% of all patients and synchronously in up to 30% in locally advanced gastric cancer. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) have been an established treatment option in selected patients for several years, as the HIPEC serves as an alternative administration route. OBJECTIVE This article presents a schematic display of the various treatment options depending on the extent of peritoneal carcinomatosis in a gastric cancer. METHODS A literature search and analysis of the current literature on the treatment of gastric cancer with peritoneal metastases were carried out. A differentiation was made between limited and extensive peritoneal carcinomatosis together with the appropriate treatment strategy. RESULTS Principally, individual systemic chemotherapy is the backbone of treatment of gastric cancer with peritoneal metastases. In selected patients and in cases of limited peritoneal carcinomatosis, CRS and HIPEC can be conducted and survival is improved; however, CRS is still contraindicated in cases of extensive peritoneal carcinomatosis and in exceptional cases pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) can be carried out. CONCLUSION In selected patients CRS and HIPEC can lead to an improvement with respect to overall and disease-free survival. In cases of extensive peritoneal carcinomatosis, individualized chemotherapy remains the major treatment option.

Abstract
Gastric cancer (GC) is an aggressive malignancy with a high burden of peritoneal disease. Evidence regarding the use of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) to improve outcomes has been growing. However, given multiple limitations, there remains a lack of international consensus regarding the optimal treatment paradigm. This review article discusses the burden of peritoneal disease in GC patients and the role of CRS + HIPEC in all treatment intents—curative, prophylactic, and palliative.

Abstract
(1) Background: Peritoneal metastasis in gastric cancer is associated with a poor prognosis. Complete cytoreductive surgery including gastrectomy and complete removal of all peritoneal lesions followed by hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) achieves promising results. There exists an immersive variety of approaches for HIPEC that makes it difficult to weigh different results obtained in the literature. In order to enable standardization and development of HIPEC, we here present a systematic review of different drug regimens and technical approaches. (2) Methods: PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched on 26 May 2021 using the mesh terms “intraperitoneal chemotherapy AND gastric cancer”. Under consideration of systematic review guidelines, articles reporting on HIPEC in combination with CRS were selected. Data on duration, drugs, dosage, and other application parameters as well as morbidity and long term survival data were extracted for subsequent statistical analysis, tabulation, and descriptive synthesis. We assessed the risk of bias due to inhomogeneity of the patient cohort and incompleteness of report of HIPEC parameters. (3) Results: Out of 1421 screened publications, 42 publications presenting data from 1325 patients met the criteria. Most of the publications were single institutional retrospective cohort studies. The most common HIPEC regimen is performed after gastrointestinal anastomosis and consists of 50–200 mg/m2 cisplatinum and 30–40 mg/m2 mytomycin C at 42–43 °C for 60–90 min in a closed abdomen HIPEC system with three tubes. Almost every study reported incompletely on HIPEC parameters. Lower rates of anastomotic leakage were reported in studies that performed HIPEC after gastrointestinal anastomosis. Studies that performed open HIPEC and integrated a two-drug regimen indicated better overall survival rates. (4) Discussion: This is an exhaustive overview of the use of drug regimens and techniques for HIPEC after CRS for gastric cancer peritoneal metastasis. Other indications and application modes of intraperitoneal chemotherapy such as prophylactic or palliative HIPEC apart from CRS were not addressed. (5) Conclusion: Complete report of HIPEC parameters should be included in every publication. A consensus for dose expression either per BSA or as flat dose is desirable for comparison of the drug regimens. Despite numerous variations, we identified the most common regimens and techniques and their advantages and disadvantages according to the data in the literature. More phase I/II studies are needed to identify the best approach for HIPEC. (6) Other: This review was not supported by third parties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This meta-analysis was designed to systematically assess the effectiveness and safety of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) combined with surgery for different stages of advanced gastric cancer (AGC) during the last 12 years. METHODS The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) were searched online, and papers were retrieved from other sources. Next, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and high-quality nonrandomized controlled trials (NRCTs) were selected for this analysis. The meta-analysis was conducted with RevMan5.4 software. RESULT The 10 RCTs and 13 NRCTs selected for the study included 1892 patients. The overall survival rates were higher in the HIPEC group at 1 year (risk ratio [RR], 0.52; P = 0.004) and 3 years (RR, 0.63; P < 0.00001) than in the control group for the patients without peritoneal cancer, and the HIPEC group had a significant reduction in the recurrence rate (RR, 0.60; p < 0.00001). Among the patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC), the HIPEC group had significantly higher overall survival rates at 1 year (RR, 0.62; P = 0.00001), 2 years (RR, 0.85; P = 0.002), and 3 years (RR, 0.87; P = 0.0001), with an increase in the overall median survival time of 4.67 months. The two groups showed no statistically significant difference in terms of complications for patients with PC (RR, 1.03; P = 0.93) or without PC (RR, 1.15; P = 0.51). CONCLUSION For local AGC without PC, standard surgery combined with prophylactic HIPEC could prolong survival and reduce the recurrence rate without more complications. The prognosis of this treatment strategy for patients with PC is closely related to patient selection. Complete cytoreduction combined with therapeutic HIPEC could prolong survival.

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the effects of early coelom continued circulatory hyperthermic perfusion chemotherapy combined with systemic chemotherapy on the survival and serum tumor markers. A total of 128 patients with advanced gastric carcinoma who have received surgical treatments were selected and were randomly divided into study group (receiving early circulatory intraperitoneal hyperthermic perfusion chemotherapy combined with systemic chemotherapy postoperatively) and control group (receiving chemotherapy alone postoperatively), with 64 cases in each. Comparison of serum tumor markers (CA724, CA242), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), immune function indexes (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+), and 5-year survival rate was assessed. Before treatment, there was no significant difference in the serum tumor markers (CA724 and CA242) as well as the serum VEGF, MMP-2, and MMP-9 levels among the two groups ( P > 0.05). However, the above parameters in the study group were significantly lower than control group 8 weeks after the treatment ( P < 0.05). Before treatment, there was no significant difference in CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ and CD4+/CD8+ between the two groups ( P > 0.05). Eight weeks after the treatment, the CD3+, CD4+ and CD4+/CD8+ in the study group were significantly higher than those in the control group ( P < 0.05), while the CD8+ levels was significantly lower than the latter group ( P < 0.05). The 2-year recurrence rate in the study group was lower than the control group ( P < 0.05). Furthermore, survival rates (1-year, 3-year and 5-year) of the study group were all higher than control group ( P < 0.05). Early circulatory hyperthermia perfusion chemotherapy combined with systemic chemotherapy contributed to the decrease in the serum tumor markers (CA724, CA242) as well as the serum VEGF, MMP-2, and MMP-9 levels, improved the immune functions. This therapeutic regimen prolonged the long-term survival conditions of the patients as well as proved the safety and effectiveness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malignant ascites, a complication often seen in patients with ovarian cancer (OC), is difficult to treat, but hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has a good efficacy. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with HIPEC for controlling malignant ascites from OC. MATERIALS AND METHODS From December 2009 until December 2014, 53 patients with OC and malignant ascites were treated with CRS and HIPEC. Patients in good health condition were treated with CRS followed by HIPEC (CRS + HIPEC), and patients in poor health condition were treated initially with B-mode ultrasound-guided HIPEC followed by delayed CRS upon improvement of their health condition (HIPEC + delayed CRS). Resolution of ascites, complete CRS, overall survival, and disease-free survival were analyzed. RESULTS All patients showed ascites regression. The total objective remission rate was 100%, even for patients in the poor condition group before CRS. Complete CRS was successful in 30 (88.23%) of 34 patients in the good condition group, and 17 (89.47%) of 19 patients in the poor condition group (P > 0.05). Median disease-free survival and median overall survival were 21 and 39 months in the good condition group, and 22 and 38 months in the poor condition group, respectively (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy is effective at controlling ascites in patients with OC, even for patients in poor condition before CRS, or when complete CRS is not feasible. Furthermore, the regression of ascites appears not to be dependent on complete resection.

Abstract
A novel, minimally invasive interventional technique, radiofrequency heat (RFH), has been suggested to improve the efficacy of chemotherapy for solid organ tumors. However, the treatment for prostate cancer has not been completely characterized. The aim of the present study was to investigate the in vitro and in vivo efficiency of chemotherapy in combination with RFH for the treatment of prostate cancer. The following four treatment groups were included: i) No treatment (control); ii) RFH-only; iii) chemotherapy (docetaxel)-only; and iv) combination therapy of docetaxel and RFH in human prostate cancer (HPC) cell lines and mice with HPC xenografts. In the in vitro experiments, a heating guidewire was attached under the bottom of the last chamber of the four-chamber cell culture slide, and was then connected to a radiofrequency (RF) generator. In the in vivo experiments, a tumor model was generated by subcutaneously injecting human prostate cancer cells into 24 male nu/nu mice. RFH was conducted by inserting the 0.022-inch heating-guidewire into the tumor. The follow-up magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a significant reduction in the average tumor size in animals treated with combination therapy compared with those receiving RFH-only and chemotherapy-only. The number of apoptotic cells and the average apoptotic index of the combination therapy group were significantly higher compared with those of the other three treatment groups. In conclusion, the results of the present study suggested that RFH is able to increase the therapeutic efficiency of docetaxel in prostate cancer, and this study serves as a foundation for the future development of an interventional molecular image-guided local treatment strategy for prostate cancer that integrates RF technology, interventional oncology and direct intratumoral chemotherapy, as a replacement for systemic chemotherapy.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) has been used within various multimodality strategies for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer peritoneal carcinomatosis. OBJECTIVE To systematically evaluate the role of HIPEC in gastric cancer and clarify its effectiveness at different stages of peritoneal disease progression. DATA SOURCES Medline and Embase databases between January 1, 1985 and June 1, 2016. STUDY SELECTION Randomised control trials and high-quality non-randomised control trials selected on a validated tool (methodological index for non-randomised studies) comparing HIPEC and standard oncological management for the treatment of advanced stage gastric cancer with and without peritoneal carcinomatosis were considered. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS A random-effects network meta-analysis. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcomes were overall survival and disease recurrence. Secondary outcomes were overall complications, type of complications, and sites of recurrence. RESULTS A total of 11 RCTs and 21 non-randomised control trials (2520 patients) were included. For patients without the presence of peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC), the overall survival rates between the HIPEC and control groups at 3 or 5 years resulted in favour of the HIPEC group (risk ratio [RR] = 0.82, P = 0.01). No difference in the 3-year overall survival (RR = 0.99, P = 0.85) in but a prolonged median survival of 4 months in favour of the HIPEC group (WMD = 4.04, P < 0.001) was seen in patients with PC. HIPEC was associated with significantly higher risk of complications for both patients with PC (RR = 2.15, P < 0.01) and without (RR = 2.17, P < 0.01). This increased risk in the HIPEC group was related to systemic drugs toxicity. Anastomotic leakage rates were found to be similar between groups. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrates a survival advantage of the use of HIPEC as a prophylactic strategy and suggests that patients whose disease burden is limited to positive cytology and limited nodal involvement may benefit the most from HIPEC. For patients with extensive carcinomatosis, the completeness of cytoreductive surgery is a critical prognostic factor for survival. Future RCTs should better define patient selection criteria.

Abstract
Background Salvage chemotherapy is the mainstay of treatment for metastatic gastric cancer (mGC). This study aimed to clarify the effects of palliative gastrectomy (PG) and identify prognostic factors in mGC patients undergoing PG. Methods This was a retrospective review of 333 mGC patients receiving PG or a non-resection procedure (NR) between 2000 and 2010. Clinicopathological factors affecting the prognosis of these patients were collected prospectively and analyzed. Results One hundred and ninety-three patients underwent PG and 140 NR. The clinicopathological characteristics were comparable between the two groups except for metastatic pattern. There were no significant differences in postoperative morbidity and mortality between the two groups. The PG group had a significantly longer median overall survival compared with the NR group (7.7 months vs. 4.9 months). In the PG group, age ≤58 years, preoperative albumin level >3 g/dL, ratio of metastatic to examined lymph nodes ≤0.58, and administration of chemotherapy were independent prognostic factors in multivariate analysis. Conclusions Patients undergoing PG had better outcomes than those undergoing NR. Among the patients undergoing resection, age ≤58 years, a better preoperative nutritional status, less nodal involvement and postoperative chemotherapy independently affected patient survival.

Abstract
Although gastric cancer with peritoneal carcinomatosis is associated with poor prognosis and is generally treated with palliative systemic therapy, recent studies have shown that cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) may prove to be an efficacious treatment option. In addition to reviewing the natural history of gastric cancer with peritoneal carcinomatosis, this mini-review examines literature on the efficacy of CRS and HIPEC as compared to chemotherapy and surgical options. Both randomized and non-randomized studies were summarized with the emphasis focused on overall survival. In summary, CRS and HIPEC are indeed a promising treatment option for gastric cancer with peritoneal carcinomatosis and large randomized clinical trials are warranted.

Abstract
AIM Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (HIPEC) is the treatment regime most likely to achieve prolonged survival in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis from gastroenteric cancer. To date, few publications have focused on the treatment of patients with gastric cancer alone. Several controversies remain unsolved, including the safety and effectiveness of the CRS-HIPEC combination regime, particularly in cases where HIPEC is used as adjuvant treatment after CRS. Therefore, in the current study, we aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of CRS combined with HIPEC in patients with gastric cancer. METHOD Data from 231 patients with a median age of 55.1 years treated with the CRS-HIPEC combination regime between January 2009 and December 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent the combination therapy (mean of 2.4 cycles per patient, range, 1 to 4 cycles). RESULTS Median overall survival was 37.0 months, with 1-, 2- and 3-year survival rates recorded as 83.4%, 68.5%, and 38.7%, respectively. The serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen 199 (CA199) were significantly decreased after combination therapy in the completeness of cytoreduction (CCR)-0 and CCR-1 groups, while no significant changes observed in marker levels were observed in the CC ≥2 group. The post-operative morbidity and mortality rates were 6.9% and 0.9%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed low TNM tumour stage, ascites condition and CCR score as independent predictors for better survival. CONCLUSION In view of the acceptable morbidity and mortality rates we propose that CRS combined with HIPEC presents an effective and safe treatment modality for patients with gastric cancer, especially in cases where optimal cytoreduction is achieved before the HIPEC procedure.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine the antitumor effects of hyperthermic CO2 (HT-CO2)-treated dendritic cell (DC)-derived exosomes (Dex) on human gastric cancer AGS cells. Mouse-derived DCs were incubated in HT-CO2 at 43°C for 4 h. The exosomes in the cell culture supernatant were then isolated. Cell proliferation was analyzed using the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. Cell apoptosis was observed using flow cytometry, Hoechst 33258 staining and the analysis of caspase-3 activity. In addition, the proliferation of tumor cells was evaluated in xenotransplant nude mice. HT-CO2 markedly inhibited cell proliferation, as assessed by the CCK-8 assay, and also induced apoptosis in a time-dependent manner, as demonstrated by Annexin V/propidium iodide flow cytometry, caspase-3 activity and morphological analysis using Hoechst fluorescent dye. It was also revealed that HT-CO2-treated Dex decreased the expression of heat shock protein 70 and inhibited tumor growth in nude mice. In conclusion, HT-CO2 exerted an efficacious immune-enhancing effect on DCs. These findings may provide a novel strategy for the elimination of free cancer cells during laparoscopic resection. However, the potential cellular mechanisms underlying this process require further investigation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oesophagogastric cancers are known to spread rapidly to locoregional lymph nodes and by transcoelomic spread to the peritoneal cavity. Staging laparoscopy combined with peritoneal cytology can detect advanced disease that may not be apparent on other staging investigations. The aim of this study was to determine the current value of staging laparoscopy and peritoneal cytology in light of the ubiquitous use of computed tomography in all oesophagogastric cancers and the addition of positron emission tomography in oesophageal cancer. METHODS All patients undergoing staging laparoscopy for distal oesophageal or gastric cancer between March 2007 and August 2013 were identified from a prospectively maintained database. Demographic details, preoperative staging, staging laparoscopy findings, cytology and histopathology results were analysed. RESULTS A total of 317 patients were identified: 159 (50.1%) had gastric adenocarcinoma, 136 (43.0%) oesophageal adenocarcinoma and 22 (6.9%) oesophageal squamous carcinoma. Staging laparoscopy revealed macroscopic metastases in 36 patients (22.6%) with gastric adenocarcinoma and 16 patients (11.8%) with oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Positive peritoneal cytology in the absence of macroscopic peritoneal metastases was identified in a further five patients with gastric adenocarcinoma and six patients with oesophageal adenocarcinoma. There was no significant difference in survival between patients with macroscopic peritoneal disease and those with positive peritoneal cytology (p=0.219). CONCLUSIONS Staging laparoscopy and peritoneal cytology should be performed routinely in the staging of distal oesophageal and gastric cancers where other investigations indicate resectability. Currently, in our opinion, patients with positive peritoneal cytology should not be treated with curative intent.

Abstract
Background M1 gastric cancer has a poor oncologic outcome with a median survival of less than 1 year despite aggressive chemotherapy. Recent trials include chemotherapy combined non-curative gastrectomy. This study evaluated the chemoresponse after non-curative gastrectomy in M1 gastric cancer and the survival benefit. Methods Between January 2000 and December 2010, 660 patients received chemotherapy for gastric cancer at the Department of Hemato-Oncology, Dongsan Medical Center, Keimyung University School of Medicine, Daegu, Korea. Data was collected retrospectively from the medical records. Patients who received preoperative or adjuvant chemotherapy, who underwent other surgeries like gastrojejunal bypass or exploratory laparotomy, who died within 3 months due to seriously advanced gastric cancer, who were lost to follow-up, or whose medical records were unsuitable for data collection were excluded. The remaining 101 patients had received chemotherapy only (CTx group, n = 76) or chemotherapy after non-curative gastrectomy (NCG + CTx group, n = 25). Clinicopathologic characteristics, chemoresponse, and overall survival were compared between the two groups. Results There were no significant differences between the two groups in clinicopathologic characteristics including age, sex, body mass index (BMI), comorbidity, histologic differentiation, tumor location, clinical T stage, and initial site of distant metastasis. Chemoresponse was checked on two separate occasions from the initiation of chemotherapy: first chemotherapy regimen and until the third regimen change. The NCG + CTx group showed more favorable chemoresponse than the CTx group in both checks (60% and 72% vs. 18.4% and 23.7%). The NCG + CTx group showed longer overall survival than the CTx group (26 vs. 11 months). Conclusions Non-curative gastrectomy in M1 gastric cancer could improve chemoresponse and extend overall survival.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastric cancer is a common malignant tumor. Our previous study demonstrated inhibitory effects of 3-bromopyruvate (3-BrPA) on pleural mesothelioma. Moreover, we found that 3-BrPA could inhibit human gastric cancer cell line SGC-7901 proliferation in vitro, but whether similar effects might be exerted in vivo have remained unclear. AIM To investigate the effect of 3-BrPA to human gastric cancer implant tumors in nude mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS Animals were randomly divided into 6 groups: 3-BrPA low, medium and high dose groups, PBS negative control group 1 (PH7.4), control group 2 (PH 6.8-7.8) and positive control group receiving 5-FU. The TUNEL method was used to detect apoptosis, and cell morphology and structural changes of tumor tissue were observed under transmission electron microscopy (TEM). RESULTS 3-BrPA low, medium, high dose group, and 5-FU group, the tumor volume inhibition rates were 34.5%, 40.2%, 45.1%, 47.3%, tumor volume of experimental group compared with 2 PBS groups (p<0.05), with no significant difference between the high dose and 5-FU groups (p>0.05). TEM showed typical characteristics of apoptosis. TUNEL demonstrated apoptosis indices of 28.7%, 39.7%, 48.7% for the 3-BrPA low, medium, high dose groups, 42.2% for the 5-FU group and 5% and 4.3% for the PBS1 (PH7.4) and PBS2 (PH6.8-7.8) groups. Compared each experimental group with 2 negative control groups, there was significant difference (p<0.05); there was no significant difference between 5-FU group and medium dose group (p>0.05), but there was between the 5-FU and high dose groups (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that 3-BrPA in vivo has strong inhibitory effects on human gastric cancer implant tumors in nude mice .

Abstract
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women worldwide. Recent developments in minimally invasive interventional radiology techniques have significantly improved breast cancer treatment. This study aimed to develop a novel technique for the local management of breast cancers using radiofrequency heat (RFH). We performed both in vitro experiments using human breast cancer cells and in vivo validation in xenograft animal models with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and pathological correlation to investigate the feasibility of our approach. Four treatment groups, including (1) no treatment (control), (2) RFH-only, (3) chemo (doxorubicin)-only, and (4) combination therapy with both doxorubicin and RFH, were conducted in each experiment. In vitro combination therapy significantly decreased breast cancer cell proliferation while increased their apoptosis index compared to the other three groups. MRI demonstrated a significant tumor size reduction in animals treated with combination therapy compared to those receiving other treatments in vivo. Such result was further confirmed by pathological examination. In conclusion, our findings suggests that RFH can enhance the therapeutic efficiency of doxorubicin on breast cancers, thus establishing the basis for future development of interventional molecular image-guided local chemotherapy for breast malignancies.
