Using sorghum dry distillers’ grains plus solubles in sorghum-based finishing diets: feed utilization, cattle performance and carcass traits

Extrusion modification of prolamins from distiller's grains to facilitate the construction of biopolymer films

BACKGROUND

Distiller's grains (DGs), which are rich in natural ingredients such as prolamins, are often used as low-value feed or discarded directly, resulting in great environmental pollution and resource waste. Prolamins from DGs (PDGs) were found to be a potential material for the construction of biopolymer films due to their good film-forming properties. In this study, extrusion processing was conducted to modify the physicochemical and structural properties of PDGs to facilitate the construction of biopolymer films with superior characteristics.

RESULTS

Results indicated that extrusion led to improved solubility (17.91% to 39.95%) and increased disulfide bonds (1.46 to 6.13 μmol g-1 ) in PDGs. The total and sulfur amino acid contents of extruded PDGs were increased by 13.26% and 38.83%, respectively. New aggregation patterns were formed after extrusion according to the results of scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Extrusion resulted in reduced surface hydrophobicity of PDGs (10 972 to 3632), sufficient evidence for which could be also found from structure analyses of PDGs. Finally, PDGs extruded at 110 °C were found to facilitate the forming of biopolymer films with superior mechanical properties, water resistance and thermal stability.

CONCLUSIONS

Physicochemical and structural properties of PDGs were effectively modified by extrusion processing, and extrusion modification of PDGs could be a great way to facilitate the construction of biopolymer films with superior characteristics. It could provide more possibilities to extend the applications of DGs to alleviate the problems of environmental pollution and resource waste. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Meat Quality and Muscle Tissue Proteome of Crossbred Bulls Finished under Feedlot Using Wet Distiller Grains By-Product

Wet distiller grains (WDG) are a corn by-product rich in protein and fiber that can be used in feedlot diets. This study evaluated F1 Angus-Nellore bulls fed on a control diet vs. WDG (n = 25/treatment). After a period of 129 days on these feeds, the animals were slaughtered and Longissimus thoracis samples were collected for both a meat quality evaluation and gel-based proteomic analyses. A greater ribeye area (99.47 cm²) and higher carcass weight (333.6 kg) (p < 0.05) were observed in the WDG-finished cattle compared to the control (80.7 cm²; 306.3 kg). Furthermore, there were differences (p < 0.05) in the intramuscular fat between the WDG and control animals (IMF = 2.77 vs. 4.19%), which led to a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in saturated fatty acids (FA). However, no differences (p > 0.10) were observed in terms of tenderness, evaluated using Warner–Bratzler shear force (WBSF). The proteomic and bioinformatic analyses revealed substantial changes in the biological processes, molecular functions, and cellular components of the WDG-finished cattle compared to the control. Proteins related to a myriad of interconnected pathways, such as contractile and structural pathways, energy metabolism, oxidative stress and cell redox homeostasis, and transport and signaling. In this experiment, the use of WDG supplementation influenced the protein expression of several proteins, some of which are known biomarkers of beef quality (tenderness and color), as well as the protein–protein interactions that can act as the origins of increases in muscle growth and reductions in IMF deposition. However, despite the effects on the proteome, the tenderness, evaluated by WBSF, and fatty acid profile were not compromised by WDG supplementation.

Influence of Fermented-Moutai Distillers' Grain on Growth Performance, Meat Quality, and Blood Metabolites of Finishing Cattle

The present study evaluated the effect of dietary supplementation with fermented-Moutai distillers' grain (FMDG) on the growth performance, meat quality, amino acid composition and blood metabolites of finishing cattle. Thirty cattle (2 years old; 237.55 ± 10.72 kg) were randomly assigned to one of three dietary supplementations: 0% FMDG (control), 15% FMDG (R1) and 30% FMDG (R2) [dry matter (DM) basis]. After 60 days, the inclusion of FMDG had no significant (p > 0.05) effects on the growth performance indices (dry matter intake, average daily gain and feed efficiency), meat quality (cooking yield, shear force, L^*, a^*, and b^* values) or bovine blood biochemical indicators (except albumin and immunoglobulin A). Cattle fed R1 had the lowest (p = 0.001) loin eye area. Supplementation with FMDG significantly (p < 0.05) increased the beef contents of various amino acids (except isoleucine and arginine) compared with the control diet. Specifically, R2 significantly increased (p < 0.05) the total amino acid, essential amino acid, non-essential amino acid and umami amino acid contents in beef, while the difference in bitter amino acid content between different treatments was not significant (p = 0.165). These results suggest that it is feasible to include FMDG at up to 30% DM without affecting the growth performance, meat quality or blood metabolites of finishing cattle.
