Abstract
This study assessed the supplemental effect of flushing Menz breeding rams with local agro-industrial by-products on their reproductive performance and semen quality. In a completely randomized design, rams (n = 49) with an initial weight of 25.69+2.8 kg and average age of 18.79±3.9 months were allocated to seven treatments with seven replicates. Supplementation consisted of varying combinations of metabolizable energy (7.02, 8.14, 9.91 MJ ME/kg DM) and crude protein (CP) (8.17 and 12.5 %) levels above the basal diet (pasture grazing). The experimental treatments were control, T0 (8 h of free grazing in natural pasture and fallow lands providing 4.7 MJ/Kg metabolizable energy and 6.65 CP) supplemented with T1 (500 g oats grain), T2 (500 g maize bran), T3 (500 g wheat bran), T4 (300 g oat grain +150 g broken lentil grain), T5 (300 g maize bran + 150 g broken lentil grain), T6 (400 g wheat bran). Supplementation significantly (P < 0.05) improve body condition score, scrotal circumference, semen ejaculation volume, spermatozoa concentration, and predictive potential of rams to serve ewes. Notably, all variables within the supplemented groups showed no significant differences (P > 0.05), except for scrotal circumference, where T1 and T3 showed a greater increase (P < 0.05) compared to other treatments. High and positive correlations (r = 0.89) between scrotal circumference and volume of semen were observed. Semen volume and concentration correlated positively (r = 0.7 and r = 0.9 respectively) with the rams' potential to serve ewes. It is concluded that the reproductive activity of Menz rams is influenced by their nutritional state. Agro-industrial by-products can supply adequate protein and energy levels to enhance reproductive potential of rams. The studied agro-industrial by-products are relatively inexpensive and easily accessible compared to commercial concentrates. Hence, based on the cost-effectiveness of supplementary feed used; it is recommended that T3 and T6 wheat bran-based supplementation strategies be employed to enhance the reproductive performance, semen quality, and the potential of Menz rams to serve ewes. Further research is needed to evaluate how different seasons affect the levels of protein and energy supplementation required for ram flushing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the economic relevance of fertility and reproductive traits for the beef cattle industry, investigating their genetic background and developing effective breeding strategies are paramount. Considering their late and sex-dependent phenotypic expression, genomic information can contribute to speed up the rates of genetic progress per year. In this context, the main objectives of this study were to estimate variance components and genetic parameters, including heritability and genetic correlations, for fertility, female precocity, and semen production and quality (andrological attributes) traits in Nellore cattle incorporating genomic information. RESULTS The heritability estimates of semen quality traits were low-to-moderate, while moderate-to-high estimates were observed for semen morphological traits. The heritability of semen defects ranged from low (0.04 for minor semen defects) to moderate (0.30 for total semen defects). For seminal aspect (SMN_ASPC) and bull reproductive fitness (BULL_FIT), low (0.19) and high (0.69) heritabilities were observed, respectively. The heritability estimates for female reproductive traits ranged from 0.16 to 0.39 for rebreeding of precocious females (REBA) and probability of pregnancy at 14 months (PP14), respectively. Semen quality traits were highly genetically correlated among themselves. Moderate-to-high genetic correlations were observed between the ability to remain productive in the herd until four years of age (stayability; STAY) and the other reproductive traits, indicating that selection for female reproductive performance will indirectly contribute to increasing fertility rates. High genetic correlations between BULL_FIT and female reproductive traits related to precocity (REBA and PP14) and STAY were observed. The genetic correlations between semen quality and spermatic morphology with female reproductive traits ranged from -0.22 (REBA and scrotal circumference) to 0.48 (REBA and sperm vigor). In addition, the genetic correlations between REBA with semen quality traits ranged from -0.23 to 0.48, and with the spermatic morphology traits it ranged from -0.22 to 0.19. CONCLUSIONS All male and female fertility and reproduction traits evaluated are heritable and can be improved through direct genetic or genomic selection. Selection for better sperm quality will positively influence the fertility and precocity of Nellore females. The findings of this study will serve as background information for designing breeding programs for genetically improving semen production and quality and reproductive performance in Nellore cattle.

Abstract
Seasonal reproduction contributes to increased chances of offspring survival in some animals. Dairy goats are seasonal breeding mammals. In this study, adult male Guanzhong dairy goats (10-12 months old) were used. Testis size, semen quality, hormone level, apoptosis of germ cells, and autophagy of Sertoli cells were analyzed in dairy goats during the breeding (October) and nonbreeding (April) seasons. We found that, during the nonbreeding season for dairy goats, semen quality, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels, and testosterone levels were reduced, and the number of apoptotic germ cells increased. The proliferation with decrease activity of germ cells in dairy goat during the nonbreeding season was significantly affected. However, the testis size did not change seasonally. Interestingly, Sertoli cell autophagy was more active during the nonbreeding season. The expression levels of FSH receptor, wilms tumor 1, androgen binding protein, glial cell derived neurotrophic factor, and stem cell factor decreased in dairy goats during the nonbreeding season. In summary, our results indicate that spermatogenesis in dairy goats during the nonbreeding season was not completely arrested. In addition, germ cell apoptosis and the morphology of Sertoli cells considerably changed in dairy goats during the nonbreeding season. Sertoli cell autophagy is involved in the seasonal regulation of spermatogenesis in dairy goats. These findings provide key insights into the fertility and spermatogenesis of seasonal breeding animals.

Abstract
Artificial insemination is a well-established and widely used method for genetic improvement in cattle breeding industry. Recently, researchers have shown an increased interest in the cryoprotective effects of minerals and antioxidants on semen. Previous studies on calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg), two main macro-minerals, have mainly investigated their roles in mammalian spermatogenesis and fertility. In addition, the experimental data examining the semen content regarding these minerals and antioxidants from different animal species are rather controversial and there is no general agreement about their associations with semen quality. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the seminal plasma concentrations of Ca, Mg and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in first and second ejaculations of dual-purpose Fleckvieh bulls and to link them to the sperm characteristics of fresh and frozen-thawed semen. Sperm progressive motility after thawing was used to classify the data into three groups: < 40.00%, 40.00 to 50.00% and > 50.00%. The measurements of two minerals and TAC were carried out using spectrophotometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, respectively. The results showed that there were significant differences in several parameters of semen quality between first and second ejaculations. No significant differences were also found on Ca and Mg concentrations and Ca/Mg ratio. The TAC level was significantly higher in the first ejaculation than the second one. The findings of this study suggest that TAC is a potential marker for bull semen quality assessment in the frozen semen production industry.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of raffinose and hypotaurine on sperm parameters after the freeze-thawing of Merino ram sperm. Totally 40 ejaculates of five Merino ram were used in the study. Semen samples, which were diluted with a Tris-based extender containing 10mM raffinose, 5mM hypotaurine, 5mM raffinose +2.5mM hypotaurine (H+R) and no antioxidant (control), were cooled to 5 °C and frozen in 0.25 ml French straws and stored in liquid nitrogen. Frozen straws were then thawed individually at 37 °C for 25s in a water bath for evaluation. The addition of raffinose led to higher percentages of subjective and CASA motilities (47.5 ± 12.2%, 46.3 ± 13.6%) compared to controls (38.8 ± 13.8%, 30.5 ± 11.7%, P<0.05). For the CASA progressive motility, 5mM raffinose (20.12 ± 8.82%) had increasing effect in comparison to control (10 ± 7.94%, P<0.05) following the freeze-thawing process. Raffinose and hypotaurine led to higher viability (40.8 ± 4.68%, 40.8 ± 4.7%), high sperm mitochondrial activity (29.5 ± 5.4%, 27.3 ± 4.9%) and acrosome integrity (50.8 ± 8.1, 50.7 ± 4.4) percentages, compared to control groups (31.5 ± 3.5%, 9.5 ± 8.2%, 42.8 ± 7.3%, P<0.05). H+R group only led to high sperm mitochondrial activity when compared to control group. In the comet test, raffinose and hypotaurine resulted in lower sperm with damaged DNA (6.2% and 3.9%) than that of control (9.1%), reducing the DNA damage. For TUNEL assay, The TUNEL-positive cell was distinguished by distinct nuclear staining. Raffinose and H+R groups resulted in lower sperm with TUNEL-positive cell (1.5 ± 1.2% and 2.1 ± 0.9%) than that of control (4.9 ± 2.5%) (P<0.05). In conclusion, findings of this study showed that raffinose and hypotaurine supplementation in semen extenders provided a better protection of sperm parameters against cryopreservation injury, in comparison to the control groups.

Abstract
This study was carried out on nine 3-5-year-old rams of different species: four Norduz, two Karakas, and three Ile de France × Akkaraman rams. Sperm of each ram was collected by means of an artificial vagina once per month from June to October 2007. In each case, the sperm volume, pH, viscosity, mass activity, motility, concentration, abnormal spermatozoa ratio, and the sperm death/live ratio were recorder along with the animals' testis diameter and scrotum circumferences. The concentrations of calcium, potassium, copper, magnesium, iron, and zinc levels in seminal plasma were determined. There were changes in the measured parameters according to genotype and time of sampling, which can be useful for better planning of anestrous mating programs for these ram species.
