Abstract
The study investigated the impact of resveratrol (RES) on bull sperm cryopreservation employing conventional slow (CS) and ultra-rapid (UR) freezing methods on sperm quality and in vitro fertility. Twenty-four ejaculates from four bulls were divided into four groups based on the cryopreservation method and RES addition: CS-RES (n = 80), CS-Co (n = 80), UR-RES (n = 24), and UR-Co (n = 24). The CS freezing involved exposing sperm straws with 5% glycerol to liquid nitrogen (LN2) vapors, while UR freezing submerged sperm drops with 100 mM sucrose directly into LN2. Overall, sperm kinematic parameters and integrity of plasma and acrosome membranes significantly decreased (P < 0.001) after cryopreservation. Post-thaw values of motilities (total [TM] and progressive [PSM]), velocities (curvilinear and straight-line), beat cross frequency (BCF), and sperm with intact plasma membrane/intact acrosome (PI-/PNA-) were higher (P < 0.05) with CS-RES and CS-Co treatments compared to UR-RES and UR-Co treatments. CS-RES treatment resulted in greater percentages (P < 0.05) of TM, PSM, PI-/PNA-, and fertility (blastocyst rate) than their control, CS-Co; while UR-RES showed higher BCF values (P < 0.05) than its control, UR-Co. Additionally, UR-RES treatment exhibited lower oxidative stress percentages than UR-Co (P < 0.05). This study presents the following conclusions: (1) the CS freezing resulted in better cryosurvival of bull sperm than UR freezing; (2) the RES supplementation to CS freezing medium improved sperm motility, membrane integrity, and fertility; and (3) despite low cryosurvival sperm and fertility, the RES addition to ultra-rapid freezing medium reduced oxidative stress.

Abstract
Declining semen quality will have a negative impact on the fertility of aged roosters. Various factors influence this decrease in quality. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of Moringa plant extract on semen characteristics, fertility, and hatchability in aged broiler breeder roosters. A total of 24 roosters were fed 1 of 4 dietary supplements for 10 wk: Control, 100 μL/kg (Moringa oleifera leaf extract [MOLE]-100), 200 μL/kg (MOLE-200), or 400 μL/kg body weight (MOLE-400) of Moringa oleifera extract. Results showed supplementation with MOLE-200 significantly improved (P < 0.05) semen concentration, total motility, progressive motility, sperm membrane integrity compared to other treatments. However, semen volume and body weight were unaffected (P > 0.05). Sperm lipid peroxidation, as indicated by malondialdehyde concentration, was lowest in MOLE-200. There was a significant difference observed among the treatments in terms of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) results. The testosterone concentration in the MOLE-200 treatment was significantly higher than the other treatments (P < 0.05). However, no significant differences were observed in the levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) hormones among the experimental treatments. Fertility and hatchability rates were measured at the end of the trial. Fertility, defined as the number of fertilized eggs, was greatest in the MOLE-200 treatment compared to the other treatments. Similarly, hatchability (hatched chicks/fertilized eggs %) was highest at 88.02% for MOLE-200. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with M. oleifera extract improved semen quality, fertility, and hatchability in aged broiler breeder roosters.

Abstract
Beijing You Chicken, a valuable local chicken breed from Beijing, China, was once listed as an endangered breed. From the point of view of conservation, the preservation of this breed is an important task for the local researchers. Semen cryopreservation is a popular method to maintain valuable species. However, during cryopreservation, semen is susceptible to oxidative damage. Melatonin is a potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger, so it has been selected to improve the efficiency of sperm cryopreservation. In this study, the chicken semen was treated with different concentrations of melatonin in the cryopreservation solution. The results showed that melatonin at concentrations of 10-3 M and 10-5 M significantly improved sperm progressive motility and total motility, respectively, compared to the control (P < 0.05). Melatonin at 10-3 M also significantly improved the plasma membrane and acrosome integrity of spermatozoa compared to the control. The mechanisms are that melatonin significantly reduces the level of ROS and preserves sperm mitochondrial membrane potential. Most importantly, the melatonin-treated cryopreserved chicken sperm after artificial insemination significantly increased the hatching rate of chicks compared to the control (p < 0.05). The results show that melatonin has a positive effect on the quality of the cryopreserved spermatozoa. These results provide the theoretical and practical basis for using melatonin to improve Beijing You Chicken conservation, and they may also be applicable to poultry as a whole.

Abstract
About 8-12% of couples experience infertility, with male infertility being the cause in 50% of cases. Several congenital and acquired conditions, including chronic diseases and their treatments, can contribute to male infertility. Prostate cancer incidence increases annually by roughly 3%, leading to an increment in cancer treatments that have adverse effects on male fertility. To preserve male fertility post-cancer survival, conventional cancer treatments use sperm cryopreservation and hormone stimulation. However, these techniques are invasive, expensive, and unsuitable in prepubertal patients lacking mature sperm cells. Alternatively, nutritional therapies enriched with bioactive compounds are highlighted as non-invasive approaches to prevent male infertility that are easily implementable and cost-effective. In fact, curcumin and resveratrol are two examples of bioactive compounds with chemo-preventive effects at the testicular level. In this article, we summarize and discuss the literature regarding bioactive compounds and their mechanisms in preventing cancer treatment-induced male infertility. This information may lead to novel opportunities for future interventions.

Abstract
Cryopreservation generates a substantial quantity of ROS in semen, leading to a decline in sperm quality and fertilization capacity. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of resveratrol and its optimal concentration on ram sperm quality after cryopreservation. Ram semen was diluted with a freezing medium containing different concentrations of resveratrol (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 μM). After thawing, various sperm parameters such as total motility, progressive motility, acrosome integrity, plasma membrane integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential, glutathione (GSH) content, glutathione synthase (GPx) activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, catalase (CAT) activity, lipid peroxidation (LPO) content, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, ROS level, SIRT1 level, DNA oxidative damage, and AMPK phosphorylation level were assessed. In addition, post-thaw sperm apoptosis was evaluated. Comparatively, the addition of resveratrol up to 75 μM significantly improved the sperm motility and sperm parameters of cryopreserved ram sperm. Specifically, 50 μM resveratrol demonstrated a notable enhancement in acrosome and plasma membrane integrity, antioxidant capacity, mitochondrial membrane potential, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content, SIRT1 level, and AMPK phosphorylation levels compared to the control group (p < 0.05). It also significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the oxidative damage to sperm DNA. However, detrimental effects of resveratrol were observed at a concentration of 100 μM resveratrol. In conclusion, the addition of 50 μM resveratrol to the cryopreservation solution is optimal for enhancing the quality of cryopreserved ram sperm.

Abstract
To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to determine the effect of ginseng as an antioxidant supplement in freezing extenders on the quality of cryopreserved rooster semen. Semen samples were collected from 40 Thai native roosters (Pradu Hang Dum) using the dorso-abdominal massage method and then pooled and divided into five groups according to the concentrations of ginseng supplementation (0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1 mg/mL) in a freezing extender. The semen suspensions were loaded into a medium straw and cryopreserved using the liquid nitrogen vapor method. The post-thaw semen was evaluated for sperm quality (sperm motility and membrane integrity), seminal plasma characteristics (lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase [SOD], catalase [CAT], and glutathione peroxidase [GPx]), and fertility. The results showed that ginseng extract supplementation at 0.25 mg/mL yielded the highest total motility, progressive motility, and membrane integrity (59.47%, 30.82%, and 48.30%, respectively; p < 0.05) in cryopreserved rooster semen. Higher malondialdehyde concentrations were observed in the control group than in the other groups (p < 0.05). SOD, CAT, and GPx increased compared with those in the control group (p < 0.05). The results showed that the fertility rate with 0.25 mg/mL of ginseng was higher than that of the control group (62.80% vs. 46.28%: p < 0.05). In conclusion, supplementation with 0.25 mg/mL of ginseng is recommended as an alternative component to the freezing extender to improve rooster semen cryopreservation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Resveratrol (Res) was a naturally occurring polyphenol compound. It has various beneficial effects, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-cancer effects. However, the anti-cancer activity was hindered by its low targeting and drug release performance. Thus, we synthesized transferrin-cathepsin B cleavable peptide modified mesoporous silica nanoparticle encapsulated Res (Tf-Res-MSN). METHODS Res was encapsulated in mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN), which was a kind of drug carrier complex. Tf was modified to recognize the cancer cells. Cathepsin B cleavable peptide (Pep) was used to combine Res-MSN complex and Tf to construct the final product. Pep was used as linker and trigger for Res release. KEY FINDINGS The smart nanocarriers were increased the drug release performance of Res in human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells. The physicochemical properties of Tf-Res-MSN were assessed by zeta potential, UV-Prove, diffraction scanning calorimetry (DSC), nitrogen physisorption analysis and transmission electron microscope (TEM). MTT assay, AO and Annexin V-FITC/PI staining were performed to explore the anti-tumour activity of Tf-Res-MSN. The results showed that Tf-Res-MSN significantly decreased cell viability and increased cell apoptosis. The inhibition rate and apoptotic rate of Tf-Res-MSN in MCF-7 cells were 95.75% and 80.8%, respectively. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated that Tf-Res-MSN was a valuable technique with potential value in breast cancer applications.

Abstract
There is considerable interest in breeding programs to "rescue" semen with poor post-thaw fertility from bulls known as "bad freezers". We hypothesized that there may be an interaction between the post-thaw recovery of sperm and the efficacy of antioxidant addition to extenders. The current study assesses the effects of antioxidant additives hydroxytyrosol (HT) and resveratrol (RSV) on the post-thaw semen parameters in two groups of bulls classified as either high or low cryotolerant (i.e., "good" and "bad" freezers). Semen samples were collected from 40 bulls and processed in the extenders containing different concentrations of HT (experiment 1; 0, 25 and 50 µM) and RSV (experiment 2; 0.0, 0.01, 0.1 and 1 mM). In experiment 1, bulls in the low cryotolerance group had a significant improvement in post-thaw recovery at 25 µM and 50 µM (P < 0.05). These improvements were observed in motility and several cellular parameters. However, post-thaw semen quality in the high cryotolerance group was not significantly affected by the HT addition. In experiment 2, although RSV did not have any positive impact in high cryotolerance group, post-thaw recovery in the low cryotolerance bulls was significantly improved in 0.1 mM RSV. Oxidative stress markers in either high or low cryotolerance groups were not significantly changed by RSV addition (P > 0.05). It can be concluded that addition of optimized concentrations of HT and RSV to the extender could be a strategy for improving the post-thaw semen, especially in bulls with high genetic merit but low initial cryotolerance.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is associated with impaired sperm quality after thawing. Since mitochondria are the main source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in sperm, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of targeted mitochondrial antioxidant mitoquinone (MitoQ) and non-targeted mitochondrial antioxidant pentoxifylline (PTX) during cooling and cryopreservation of rooster sperm. Sperm samples were collected from 15 roosters aged 28 wk and diluted with Beltsville extender. After dilution and addition of treatments (50, 100, and 200 pMol MitoQ and 0.5, 0.75, and 1 μM PTX), samples were cooled for 2 h to 4°C and they were first analyzed at this stage and were frozen and re-evaluated after thawing. After the freezing and thawing, level of 100 pMol MitoQ significantly increased total motility (TM), progressive motility (PGM), curvilinear velocity (VCL), membrane integrity, viability, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and the glutathione peroxidase (GPx), as well as the level of 50 pMol significantly increased TM, PGM, average path velocity (VAP), straight-line velocity (VSL), membrane integrity, viability, and mitochondrial activity. Moreover, these 2 levels (50 and 100 PMol) decreased malondialdehyde and sperm with abnormal morphology. Addition of 0.75 μM PTX also increased total motility compared to the control group and levels of 0.5 and 0.75 μM decreased sperm with abnormal morphology. It could be concluded the addition of MitoQ and PTX can be useful for sperm cryopreservation industry and reduce the harmful effects of freeze-thawing.

Abstract
Antioxidant nanoparticles include the potential for improving sperm cryopreservation. The aim of performing this study was to evaluate the effects of gamma-oryzanol (GO) at 0 (C) (control group), 20 (GO20), 40 (GO40), 60 (GO60), 80 (GO80), and 100 (GO100) µM and gamma-oryzanol nanoparticles (GON) at 0 (CN), 20 (GON20), 40 (GON40), 60 (GO60), 80 (GON80), and 100 (GON100) µM on post-thawed sperm quality and fertility of rooster sperm. Sperm motility, plasma membrane integrity, total abnormality, mitochondrial activity (Rhodamine 123), apoptotic features (Annexin V/Propidium iodide), reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, ATP content and the fertility and hatchability were evaluated after thawing. Total motility in GON60 and GON80 were significantly higher compared to control groups (C and CN). GON80 showed the greatest percentages of progressive motilities. When GO80, GON60, and GON80 were added to the cryopreservation medium, the plasma membrane functionality of the semen samples improved. The minimum abnormality of spermatozoa is observed in the group treated with GON80. The groups treated with GON60 and GON80 had greater (P < 0.05) mitochondrial activity. The level of sperm ROS after cryopreservation was significantly lower in GON60 and GON80 groups. Live sperm was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in GON60 and GON80 group compared to other groups. GON60 and GON80 groups also led to the lowest significant percentage of apoptosis-like change sperm. Greater fertility percentages were observed (P < 0.05) when sperm were stored in extenders treated with GON60 and GON80. GON80 resulted in significantly improved hatched eggs compared to C, GO60, GO180 and CN. In conclusion, supplementation of Lake extender with 60 and 80 µM gamma-oryzanol nanoparticles could be a proper process to improve freeze-thawing rooster sperm quality leading to better freeze/thaw characteristics.

Abstract
Avian spermatozoa are highly susceptible to reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced during the cryopreservation. The aim of the current study was to investigate the antioxidant effects of resveratrol (RSV) during rooster semen cryopreservation. Changes in expression of AMP-activated protein kinase as a possible mechanism behind the beneficial effects of resveratrol were also evaluated. Semen samples were collected from ten Ross broiler breeders (52-wk) using abdominal massage, then divided into 4 equal aliquots and cryopreserved in Beltsville extender that contained different concentrations (0 µM, 0.01µM, 0.1µM, and 1µM) of RSV. higher percentage (P < 0.05) of total motility and membrane integrity was observed in RSV-0.1 compared to the other frozen groups. Moreover, higher percentage of sperm mitochondrial activity was observed in the RSV-0.01 and RSV-0.1 compared to the frozen control (P < 0.05). The lowest percentage of apoptotic like changes was found in the RSV-0.1 in comparison to the other groups (P < 0.05). RSV-0.01 and RSV-1 groups produced the lowest levels of H2O2 and O2- compared to the other frozen groups, respectively. Malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, velocity average path (VAP), and linearity (LIN) were not affected by different concentrations of RSV (P > 0.05). We observed a dose-dependent increase in AMP-activated protein kinase expression in groups exposed to RSV. Thus, RSV-1 increased AMP-activated protein kinase phosphorylation but had no positive effects on post thaw sperm parameters. Our findings suggest that RSV-0.1 improve thawed sperm functions, and these effects might be mediated through activation of AMP-activated protein kinase.

Abstract
Post-thawing cryoinjuries in boar spermatozoa due to oxidative stress may be reduced by adding nanoencapsulated antioxidants to freezing extenders. This study evaluated post-thawing kinetics, structural and biochemical functions of boar spermatozoa frozen with extenders including resveratrol and vitamin E loaded into polymeric nanocapsules. Resveratrol was added at 0 (control), 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 µg/ml, whereas Vitamin E was added at 0 (control), 50, 100, 200 and 400 µg/ml. Both antioxidants were tested in free and nanoencapsulated presentations. In contact with empty nanocapsules, some sperm kinetics parameters were impaired compared to the control (p < .05), whereas lipoperoxidation declined (p < .05). With inclusion of 40 µg/ml nanoencapsulated resveratrol, some sperm kinetics parameters were improved (p < .01), but sperm motility, structural and biochemical functions did not differ from the control (p > .05). No improvement in sperm quality occurred with inclusion of vitamin E, although sperm kinetics with 400 µg/ml nanoencapsulated vitamin E was reduced compared to the control (p < .01). Inclusion of 40 µg/ml nanoencapsulated resveratrol benefitted boar sperm kinetics after thawing, but no improvement resulted from inclusion of vitamin E.

Abstract
Antioxidants have multiple protective roles in a variety of cells and thus can be used to
protect sperm against cryo-damage during freezing, which affects fertility. The
antioxidant resveratrol (3,5,4-trihydroxytrans-stilbene; RSV) has been reported to protect
the animal sperm during cryopreservation, including human sperm. In this study, we
assessed the protective effects of RSV supplementation on dog sperm cryopreservation.
Semen was collected from four dogs and the effect of different concentrations of RSV (0,
100, 200, and 400 µM) on post-thaw sperm quality was examined. After thawing, sperm
motility was assessed using computer-aided sperm analysis, and the structural integrity of
the plasma membrane, acrosome, and chromatin was examined. In addition, their
mitochondrial activity and gene expression were also assessed. Dog sperm cryopreserved
with 200 µM RSV showed significant improvement in post-thaw sperm motility and viability
compared with that of the control group (P<0.05). Moreover,
RSV-supplemented samples showed significantly higher numbers of sperm with an intact
plasma membrane, active mitochondria, and structural integrity of acrosomes and chromatin
than that of control samples (P<0.05). Furthermore, gene expression
showed that RSV supplemented samples showed lower expression of pro-apoptotic
(BAX), reactive oxygen species (ROS) modulator oxidative stress-related
(ROMO1) and 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase 1 (OGG1)
whereas higher expression levels of anti‐apoptotic (BCL2), protamine-2
(PRM2), protamine-3 (PRM3) and sperm
acrosome‐associated 3 (SPACA3) genes than control. Our results suggest
that RSV, at its optimum concentration, can be efficiently used as an antioxidant in the
cryopreservation of dog sperm.

Abstract
Aiming to simultaneous target of methotrexate (MTX), as folate antagonist, and conferone (CON) in various cancer cells, the newly lipid/polymer hybrid nanoparticle containing an albumin targeted succinylchitosan shell and lipoid bilayer core composed of hydrogenated soy phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol was synthesized. The covalently conjugating albumin to the external surface of chitosan was accomplished using N-(3-Dimethylaminopropyl)-N-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride and N- hydroxyl succinimide as an activating carboxylic group, and nanoliposomes were fabricated via thin film hydration-sonication method. The molecular structure of MTX@CON-targeted lipid/polymer hybrid nanoparticle (MTX@CON-TLPN) were characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, 1H NMR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The newly nanoparticle with high encapsulation efficiency (85.12%, and 78.4%), acceptable loading capacity (9.8% and 4.6% for MTX and CON) and the stimuli responsiveness drug release behavior in simulated physiologic tumor tissue condition (pH 5.4, 40 °C) was successfully synthetized in the spherical shape with mean average size of approximately 290 nm and ζ-potential of +21 mv. The enhanced efficiency of the targeted nanoparticle was further confirmed using MTT endpoints, cell cycle modulation, apoptosis assessment, and cellular internalization assessments. Collectively, these findings establish the utility of our newly prepared nanoparticle for simultaneous delivery of multiple anti-cancer drugs.

Abstract
The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the potential benefits of antioxidant enrichment of semen extenders. These substances are used to combat oxidative stress during processing and conservation of rooster semen. A literature search was performed in June 2020 using the keywords rooster AND (semen OR spermatozoa OR sperm OR ejaculate OR ejaculation). This report followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis) guidelines. The PICO (population intervention comparison outcome) question was defined to compare roosters (Population) which had added antioxidants in the semen (Intervention) compared to the no-antioxidant group (Control); the outcome was semen quality (Outcome). Only articles investigating rooster cooled or frozen enriched semen with antioxidant extenders (Gallus Gallus domesticus) were selected by reading the title and abstract, totalizing 38 articles. After full text reading, we found that only 13 studies carried out sperm characteristics and fertility assays. To assess article quality, 15 items related to rooster breeding conditions, seminal collection methodology, and analyzed variables (seminal characteristics and fertility test) were established. There were positive effects of antioxidants on the preservation of seminal characteristics (motility, viability, membrane integrity, antioxidant activity, and lipid peroxidation) and on semen fertility after the conservation process. We conclude that the antioxidants reduce the oxidative stress and improve fertilizing capacity. The most used substances for cooled semen are glutathione, CoQ10, and l-carnitine; whereas for frozen semen, resveratrol, lycopene, and quercitin are most frequently used.

Abstract
The aim of our study was to examine the effects of crocin (0.5 (C0.5), 1 (C1) and 1.5 (C1.5) mM) and naringenin (50 (N50), 100 (N100) and 150 (N150) μM) in cryopreservation extender for freezing rooster semen. Sperm motility, viability, abnormalities, membrane functionality, active mitochondria, apoptosis status, lipid peroxidation (LP), GPX, SOD, TAC, the mRNA expression of pro-apoptotic (CASPASE 3) and anti-apoptotic (Bcl-2) genes, fertile eggs, hatched eggs and hatching rate were investigated following freeze-thawing. C1 and N100 resulted in higher (P < 0.05) total motility and progressive motility in comparison to the control group. The C1 and N100 groups improved viability, membrane functionality and reduced lipid peroxidation. We found higher values for active mitochondria with C1 and N100 compared to control group. The C1 and N100 groups showed lower percentages of early apoptosis when compared with control group. Also, C1 and N100 had higher TAC, compared to the control group. The mRNA expressions of BCL-2 in the C1 and N100 groups were significantly higher than that of other treatments. The expression of CASPASES 3 was significantly reduced in C1 and N100 group (P < 0.05) when compared to control group. Significantly higher percentages of fertile eggs, hatched eggs and hatching rate were observed in C1 and N100 compared to the control group. In conclusion, crocin at 1 mM and naringenin at 100 μM seem to improve the post-thawing rooster semen quality, fertility and could protect the sperm by reducing the pro-apoptotic (CASPASE 3) and increasing anti-apoptotic (Bcl-2) genes.

Abstract
Oxidative stress could be prevented by antioxidant-loaded nanoparticles. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of 10 (A10), 20 (A20), 30 (A30), 40 (A40), and 50 (A50) μM alpha-lipoic acid and alpha-lipoic acid nanostructured lipid carriers (ALN) at 10 (ALN10), 20 (ALN20), 30 (ALN30), 40 (ALN40), and 50 (ALN50) μM on post-thawed sperm quality, fertility, and apoptosis-related genes of rooster sperm. The extender supplemented with ALN30 led to higher total and progressive motility, straight-line velocity, and linearity in comparison to the control group. The ALN30 resulted in higher percentage of mitochondria activity and glutathione peroxidase level compared with control (P < 0.05). The extender supplemented with ALN30 led to lower percentage of apoptotic sperm, when compared with the control. CASPASE 3 expression in ALN30 was lower (P < 0.05) than the other groups. The results showed that BCL-2 mRNA expression of sperm was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in ALN30 compared with the other groups (P < 0.05). Higher percentages of fertility and hatchability rates were observed in ALN30 group. The results indicate that ALN30 could be regarded as a novel potential cryoprotectant for the cryopreservation of rooster semen. Therefore, nanostructured lipid carriers improve not only the active compound (such as alpha-lipoic acid) of biomedical applicability but also the potential for industrial application in sperm cryopreservation.

Abstract
Glycerol is the most widely used cryoprotectant for rooster sperm because it declines the mechanical damage to sperm during the freezing process. Despite its high molecular weight and viscosity, which may be cytotoxic, glycerol can cause damage to cells during the cryopreservation process, resulting in less fertility. Poloxamer 188 (P188) is an embryo cryopreservation supplement effective in many species and also for cell lines and plant cells. We tested the suitability of P188 in the cryopreservation of rooster sperm, considering post-thawing motility, abnormalities, membrane functionality (hypo-osmotic swelling test), mitochondrial activity, viability, apoptosis status, reactive oxygen species production, and ATP content after thawing and the fertility and hatchability after AI. We carried out a factorial experiment with glycerol concentrations of 2% glycerol (G2) and 8% glycerol (G8) and P188 concentrations of 0% (P0), 0.1% (P0.1), 0.5% (P0.5), and 1% (P1) as fixed effects, with replicate (seven) as a random effect. Interactions between glycerol and P188 were found, with G2P1 yielding higher quality and fertility. G8P0.5 yielded better in most parameters, however, not reaching G2P1. G2P1 showed significantly higher results for total and progressive motility, kinetic parameters (average path velocity, straight-line velocity, and linearity), membrane functionality, viability, mitochondrial activity, and ATP content and lower apoptosis, dead sperm, and reactive oxygen species production. G2P1 resulted in the highest percentages of fertilized and hatched eggs, with no effects in the hatched eggs ratio. Interestingly, G2 was less efficient in many parameters than G8 when combined with P0 and P0.1, being equivalent to G8 with P0.5 and superior to any G8 treatment as G2P1. In conclusion, P188 could improve rooster semen cryopreservation and allow reduction of glycerol in extenders, with a consequent impact in the poultry industry.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of different concentrations of resveratrol on head morphology, motility characteristics, oxidative state and in vitro fertility of cooled ram spermatozoa. Pooled semen from three Najdi rams was diluted with Triladyl® having different concentrations of resveratrol, zero (control), 200 μM (45.65 μg/mL) and 400 μM (91.30 μg/mL) resveratrol, then stored at 5 °C for 168 h. The head morphometric, sperm kinematic parameters, Malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and in vitro fertilizing capability of ram spermatozoa were evaluated after 24, 72, 120 and 168 h of cooling storage. The total motility (TM) of the sperm with resveratrol at 200 μM and 400 μM was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher than that in the control group at 72 and 120 h of cooling storage. On the other hand, the progressive motility (PM) of the sperm with resveratrol at 200 μM and 400 μM was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher than that in the control group at 168 h of cooling storage period. After 168 h of cooling storage, significantly higher straightness (STR) was observed in 400 μM group than two other groups and in 200 μM group than the control group. Both resveratrol groups had higher linearity (LIN) than control one at 120 and 168 h of cooling storage. The length, width and area of sperm head were lower (P ≤ 0.05) in the control compared to the other treatment groups after 120 and 168 h of storage. There was a significant increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) concentration in the two resveratrol groups compared with the control one over the seven days of cooling storage and the same result was found in the reduced glutathione (GSH) concentration at 24, 72, and 168 h of storage. There was a significant (p ≤ 0.05) decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration in the 400 μM resveratrol group than that in two other groups over the seven days of storage period. Cleavage and blastocyst rates following in vitro fertilization were significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) in 400 μM resveratrol than other groups at 72 h for cooling storage period. In conclusion, addition of resveratrol in the extender can protect sperm head morphology, improve kinematic parameters and in vitro fertility, and reduce oxidative stress of ram spermatozoa during liquid storage at 5 °C.

Abstract
To ensure success in the development and manufacturing of nanomedicines requires forces of an interdisciplinary team that combines medicine, engineering, chemistry, biology, material and pharmaceutical areas. Numerous researches in nanotechnology applied to human health are available in the literature. Althought, the lack of nanotechnology-based pharmaceuticals products for use exclusively in veterinary pharmacotherapy creates a potential area for the development of innovative products, as these animal health studies are still scarce when compared to studies in human pharmacotherapy. Nano-dosage forms can ensure safer and more effective pharmacotherapy for animals and can more be safer for the consumers of livestock products, once they can offer higher selectivity and smaller toxicity associated with lower doses of the drugs. In addition, the development and production of nanomedicines may consolidate the presence of pharmaceutical laboratories in the global market and can generate greater profit in a competitive business environment. To contribute to this scenario, this article provides a review of the main nanocarriers used in nanomedicines for veterinary use, with emphasis on liposomes, nanoemulsions, micelles, lipid nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, mesoporous silica nanoparticles, metallic nanoparticles and dendrimers, and the state of the art of application of these nanocarriers in drug delivery systems to animal use. Finnaly, the major challenges involved in research, scale-up studies, large-scale manufacture, analytical methods for quality assessment, and regulatory aspects of nanomedicines were discussed.

Abstract
The protective role of astaxanthin nanoparticles (Ast NPs, 25 mg/kg p.o) against cadmium (Cd, 1 mg/100 g b.w. SC), a known inductor of lipid peroxidation and changes in the antioxidant defense system in the Ross 308 breeder roosters sperm, was examined. Sperm motility (computer-assisted sperm motility analysis), membrane integrity (hypoosmotic swelling test), viability, total abnormality, and enzymatic parameters were assessed after thawing. The testis/body weight (mg/kg) ratio and HE staining results of testis were also performed. The obtained results showed that Cd induced detrimental effects on testis and sperm, while Cd treated by Ast NPs (Cd Ast) diminished this change compared to the Cd group. Cd-treated group resulted in significantly (P < 0.05) lowest total (37.29 ± 2.46) and progressive (5.84 ± 0.47) motility and decreased antioxidant enzyme activity (CAT, TAC, and GPx), as well as producing a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in testis weight (mg) compared to the control group. Treatment with Ast NPs (Ast NPs + Cd) had reversed Cd-induced changes in the antioxidant defense system and significantly prevented Cd-induced testis damage. In conclusion, the results of our work suggest that Ast NPs at 25 mg/kg act as a potent antioxidant in protecting rooster testes against oxidative stress induced by Cd.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of ram semen after cryopreservation with different levels of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) extract (0 (F0), 5 (F5), 10 (F10) and 15 (F15) mg/L) and sperm concentrations (200 (C200) and 400 (C400) × 106 sperm/mL) in a soy lecithin (SL)-based extender. Twenty ejaculates were collected from four ghezel rams and diluted with eight sperm concentrations/fennel combinations: F0C200, F5C200, F10C200, F15C200, F0C400, F5C400, F10C400 and F15C400. Sperm motility, abnormality, plasma membrane, viability, mitochondrial activity, lipid peroxidation (LPO), mitochondrial activity and apoptotic changes were evaluated after freeze-thawing process. It was observed that F10C400 significantly improved total and progressive motility, VSL, membrane integrity of post-thawed ram sperm. MDA level was lower in F5C200 and F10C400 compared to other treatments. The higher percentage of live sperm and the lower percentage of apoptotic sperm were obtained in F10C200 compared to F0C200, F5C200 F15C400, F0C400, F5C400 and F15C400. Extender F10C200 resulted in the highest mitochondria activity compared to the rest of the extenders except F10C400. We conclude that a combination of 10 mg/mL fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) extract and sperm concentration of 200 × 106 sperm/mL can improve the ram semen quality cryopreserved in a soybean lecithin based extender.
