The Quality of Telenursing-Israeli Nursing Staff's Perceptions

BACKGROUND

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has increased telemedicine and telenursing services worldwide, developed this innovative treatment's potential, and emphasized its importance. The constraints imposed by the pandemic breached regulatory, psychological, and organizational obstructions among both patients and caretakers. Community and hospital nursing services were forced to deal with a new reality, to provide remote care solutions for bedridden chronic patients, as the need for this grew exponentially. Despite the increase of telemedicine in recent years, so far no research in Israel has investigated the nursing staff's perceptions of the quality of the care provided through telenursing.

OBJECTIVE

To assess nurses' perceptions of the quality of the care provided through telenursing compared to face-to-face nursing.

METHOD

A quantitative cross-sectional study among 227 male and female nurses in Israel. The questionnaire included demographic questions, and the five measures of quality of care: concern and empathy for the patient, professional treatment, response to treatment, educated use of resources, and patients' sense of security.

RESULTS

Significant differences were found between nurses' perceptions of telenursing and face-to-face nursing. The quality of face-to-face nursing was perceived as more positive than that of telenursing, in general, as were the individual measures of care quality such as providing professional treatment, response to treatment, and patients' sense of security.

CONCLUSIONS

Although telemedicine has increased significantly in recent years, nursing staff still perceived the quality of care and follow-up of face-to-face nursing as more positive. It is important to continue to monitor nurses' perceptions and attitudes towards the strengths of these two treatment methods, not only in crisis situations, but among wider populations, and to investigate the factors that could influence these perceptions.

Characteristics of early-career nurse researchers negatively impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to identify typical patterns and determinants of early-career nurse researchers (ECNRs: age ≤45 years) who reported that their research activities were negatively impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic, using a data mining methodology. To gain a deeper understanding of the characteristics of these ECNRs, we compared them with the characteristics of senior nurse researchers (SNRs: age ≥46 years).

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

PARTICIPANTS

1532 nurse researchers.

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

We conducted an anonymous online questionnaire survey that assessed individual and professional attributes of nurse researchers and their experiences from April to June 2020. We analysed the association between the impact on research activities and the individual and professional attributes using cross-tabulation, and employed the chi-square automatic interaction detection technique to perform population segmentation.

RESULTS

We found that difficulties in research management, an increased burden of student education and organisational management, and organisational management position were relatively important factors for determining the negative impact of COVID-19 on the research activities of ECNRs (p<0.05). For both ECNRs and SNRs, the most relevant determinant of disrupted research activities was 'difficulties in research management' (χ²=34.7 and 126.5, respectively, p<0.001 for both). However, only ECNRs yielded 'position in organisational management' and was extracted only for ECNRs (χ²=7.0, p=0.008).

CONCLUSIONS

Difficulties in research management and an increased burden of student education and organisational management had an unfavourable impact on the research activities of ECNRs. To ensure quality of nursing care and nursing science development during and after the COVID-19 era, it is important to support ECNRs in their nursing research activities and career development. Our findings could contribute to the prioritisation of interventions and policymaking for ECNRs who are particularly at risk of being negatively affected by the pandemic.

An integrated approach for evaluating and improving the performance of surgical theaters with resilience engineering

Operating rooms are among the most high-risk and vital parts of a hospital. Therefore, one of the most fundamental tasks of risk management is maintaining the safety of operating rooms. Resilience engineering (RE) can be introduced as a model for overcoming problems, and it seeks ways to raise success rates by focusing on and addressing complexities. To this end, an RE-based framework is presented to evaluate the performance of operating rooms. First, the RE indicators are identified, and the relative importance of each is calculated via the best-worst method (BWM). Subsequently, the required data are collected from operating room experts using a standard questionnaire. Next, a data envelopment analysis (DEA) method is employed to evaluate the performance of operating rooms in the study case. Lastly, drawing upon the sensitivity analysis and statistical tests, the effect of each RE indicator is examined on the surgical department. Accordingly, some improvement approaches are proposed. Besides, SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis is used to extract appropriate strategies to improve performance. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first to evaluate the performance of operating rooms quantitatively in terms of RE indicators, and the framework presented in this paper can have practical applications in different operating rooms.
