Development and Validation of the Humanistic Practice Ability of Nursing Scale

Standardized training nurses's humanistic care practice ability: A cross-sectional survey in western China during COVID-19

AIM

This study aims to investigate the current status and determinants of humanistic care practice abilities among standardized training nurses in China during the post-COVID-19 era, as well as to propose management strategies.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

METHODS

Deliberately chosen were 517 standardized training nursing students from a provincial-level training facility in western China.

RESULTS

The respondents had a mean ± SD age of 21.23 ± 1.34 years, and 92.0% of them voluntarily opted for the nursing profession. Almost all (99.8%) respondents had at least a college degree. The standardized training nurses scored an average of (130.31 ± 14.18) on humanistic care ability, which was significantly related to some sociodemographic variables. The average scores for the five dimensions of nursing communication ability, psychological adjustment ability, moral and legal application ability, nursing aesthetic ability, and care practice ability were 30.78, 17.61, 32.23, 18 and 31.67, respectively. All these dimensions showed positive correlations with the overall score of humanistic care practice ability.

Examining nurses' humanistic behaviour ability and empathy levels in clinical practice: A descriptive and exploratory study

BACKGROUND

It is critical for nurses to provide healthcare services to healthy/sick individuals with a humanistic approach and with empathy.

AIMS

This research aimed to determine nurses' humanistic behaviour ability, empathy levels and related factors in clinical practice.

DESIGN

A descriptive cross-sectional and exploratory study.

METHODS

Probability sampling method was used, and 337 nurses working in two public hospitals were included in the study. Data was collected using the Humanistic Practice Ability of Nursing Scale and the Empathy Level Determination Scale. Structural equation model analysis and descriptive statistics were used to evaluate the hypothesised model. This study adhered to the STROBE checklist for reporting.

RESULTS

Nurses' humanistic ability and empathy level in nursing practices were found to be above average. Both the ability to act humanely in nursing practices and their empathy levels were found to be significantly higher in nurses who were married and had children. A significant relationship was found between empathy levels and humanistic behaviours. Accordingly, nurses' empathy levels positively affected their humanistic care behaviours, and the model established between the two concepts was found to be statistically appropriate.

CONCLUSIONS

Nurses' empathy levels positively affect their ability to act humanistically. The result of the model established between the two concepts also supports this. Care strategies should be developed that consider factors that will improve empathetic and humanistic behaviours in nurses and maximise individualised care practices.

IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION

Increasing the awareness of nurses about the factors affecting humanistic behaviours and empathic attitudes while caring for individuals in clinical practice, will contribute to improving the quality of nursing care.

Relationship between transition shock and humanistic practice ability among Chinese newly graduated nurses: Mediating effect of organizational socialization

BACKGROUND

Humanistic practice ability serves as an indispensable skills that newly graduated nurses strive to develop. Yet, there is a dearth of knowledge regarding the role of organizational socialization in mediating the association between transition shock and humanistic practice ability in Chinese newly graduated nurses.

AIM

To breakdown the association between humanistic practice ability and transition shock among Chinese newly graduated nurses, with a simultaneous concentration on the mediating effect of organizational socialization in the association.

DESIGN

Utilizing a descriptive cross-sectional study design, this research aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the variables being examined.

METHODS

A web-based survey was completed by 417 newly graduated nurses from three general public hospitals in Shandong Province, eastern China from February to March 2023. Three questionnaires were administered: the Nurse Humanistic Practice Ability Scale (NHPAS), the Organizational Socialization Questionnaire(OSQ) and the Transition shock of Newly Graduated Nurses Scale (TSNGNS). The IBM SPSS 22.0, AMOS 22.0 and GraphPad Prism 9.0.0 was applied for figure preparation and statistical analyses.

RESULTS

Findings indicated a significant statistical association among organizational socialization, transition shock and humanities practicing ability. A significant negative correlation was uncovered between OrS and TrS (r=-0.468, p<0.001), significant and negative correlation (r = -0.412, p < 0.001) was unmasked between the TrS and the HPA,whereas a significant positive correlation was observed between OrS and HPA (r=0.641, p<0.001). Moreover, in the mediation models, organizational socialization was identified as a partial mediating role in the association between transition shock and humanities practicing ability (indirect effect -0.324, p<0.001; direct effect -0.100, p =0.026; total effect -0.424, p =0.001).

CONCLUSION/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

TrS has a significantly negative influence on HPA among newly graduated nurses, and OrS partially mediating the negative effect of TrS on HPA. Nursing managers and nursing educators can reduce the adverse consequences resulted from TrS through enhancing the benefits of organizational socialization programs and eventually improve the level of HPA of newly graduated nurses.

Construction of an evaluation index system for undergraduate nursing teachers' curriculum humanistic competence: a Delphi study in China

BACKGROUND

The curriculum humanistic competence of nursing teachers is important to cultivate the humanistic qualities of undergraduate nursing students. However, there are no evaluation tools for the curriculum humanistic competence of undergraduate nursing teachers in China.

OBJECTIVE

To develop an index system to evaluate the curriculum humanistic competence of undergraduate nursing teachers.

DESIGN

This research conducted a Delphi study.

PARTICIPANTS

Semi-structured interviews were held with 19 experts, and Delphi rounds were conducted with 18 experts.

SETTINGS

This study was conducted in 12 universities and 4 Grade A tertiary hospitals in China.

METHODS

A literature review and semi-structured interviews were conducted to develop an initial framework. A two-round Delphi survey was employed to build the index system for undergraduate nursing teachers' curriculum humanistic competence.

RESULTS

After two rounds of consultation, the index system included 5 first-level indicators, 11 second-level indicators and 41 third-level indicators. The Cr for two rounds of consultation were 0.929 and 0.923, and Kendall's W was 0.152(P<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The index system for the evaluation of undergraduate nursing teachers' curriculum humanistic competence offers guidelines for undergraduate nursing teachers in China. It can be used in practice to develop high humanistic qualities in undergraduate nursing teachers.

Measurement of Humanity Among Health Professionals: Development and Validation of the Medical Humanity Scale Using the Delphi Method

BACKGROUND

Despite the importance of humanism in providing health care, there is a lack of valid and reliable tool for assessing humanity among health professionals.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to design a new humanism scale and to assess the validity of this scale in measuring humanism among Syrian health professional students.

METHODS

The Medical Humanity Scale (MHS) was designed. It consists of 27 items categorized into 7 human values including patient-oriented care, respect, empathy, ethics, altruism, and compassion. The scale was tested for internal consistency and reliability using Cronbach α and test-retest methods. The construct validity of the scale was also tested to assess the ability of the scale in differentiating between groups of health professional students with different levels of medical humanity. A 7-point Likert scale was adopted. The study included 300 participants including 97 medical, 78 dental, 82 pharmacy, and 43 preparatory-year students from Syrian universities. The Delphi method was used and factors analysis was performed. Bartlett test of sphericity and the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure of sample adequacy were used. The number of components was extracted using principal component analysis.

RESULTS

The mean score of the MHS was 158.7 (SD 11.4). The MHS mean score of female participants was significantly higher than the mean score of male participants (159.59, SD 10.21 vs 155.48, SD 14.35; P=.008). The MHS mean score was significantly lower in dental students (154.12, SD 1.45; P=.005) than the mean scores of medical students (159.77, SD 1.02), pharmacy students (161.40, SD 1.05), and preparatory-year students (159.05, SD 1.94). However, no significant relationship was found between humanism and academic year (P=.32), university type (P=.34), marital status (P=.64), or financial situation (P=.16). The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test (0.730) and Bartlett test of sphericity (1201.611, df=351; P=.01) were performed. Factor analysis indicated that the proportion of variables between the first and second factors was greater than 10%, confirming that the scale was a single group. The Cronbach α for the overall scale was 0.735, indicating that the scale had acceptable reliability and validity.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study suggest that the MHS is a reliable and valid tool for measuring humanity among health professional students and the development of patient-centered care.

Turkish Validity and Reliability Study of Humanistic Practice Ability of Nursing Scale

BACKGROUND

Nurses should have humanistic qualities to identify what the patient needs with an effective care plan and meet these needs. The aim of this study is to conduct the Turkish validity and reliability study of the Humanistic Practice Ability of Nursing Scale.

METHODS

This methodological study was carried out with 300 nurses online (e-mail, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram) between April 02, 2021, and May 15, 2021. A questionnaire prepared via docs.google.com/forms was sent to the nurses. The scale was translated into Turkish, and then, the content and construct validity of its Turkish version was obtained through exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. The reliability of the scale was tested by performing item analysis and internal consistency analysis.

RESULTS

The analysis revealed that the content validity index of the scale was 0.96. In the exploratory factor analysis performed within the scope of the Turkish adaptation of the scale, the rate of the total variance explained was 59.63%. Factor loadings of all the items ranged between 0.47 and 0.79. While Cronbach's Alpha value was 0.93 for the overall Humanistic Practice Ability of Nursing Scale, it ranged from 0.71 to 0.89 for its subscales. The exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis revealed no necessity of making any revision or modification in the scale. Therefore, the 29-item and five-dimension structure of the Humanistic Practice Ability of Nursing Scale was used in its Turkish version. Goodness-of-fit index values were obtained after the CFA was performed.

CONCLUSION

The Turkish version of the Humanistic Practice Ability of Nursing Scale can be used as a valid and reliable measurement tool to assess nurses' humanistic practice ability.
