Applications of wireless sensor networks to improve occupational safety and health in underground mines

INTRODUCTION

The very complex and hazardous environment of underground mines may significantly contribute to occupational fatalities and injuries. Deploying wireless sensor network (WSN) technology has the potential to improve safety and health monitoring of miners and operators. However, the application of WSN in the industry is not fully understood and current research themes in this area are fragmented. Thus, there is a need for a comprehensive review that directly explores the contribution of WSNs to occupational safety and health (OSH) in underground mines.

METHOD

This study aims to conduct a systematic literature review on the existing applications of WSNs for improving OSH in the underground mining industry to pinpoint innovative research themes and their main achievements, reveal gaps and shortcomings in the literature, recommend avenues for future scholarly works, and propose potential safety interventions. The major contribution of this review is to provide researchers and practitioners with a holistic understanding of the integration of WSN applications into underground mine safety and health management.

RESULTS

The review results have been categorized and discussed under three predominant categories including location monitoring and tracking, physiological and body kinematics monitoring, and environmental monitoring. Finally, seven major directions for future research and practical interventions have been identified based on the existing research gaps including: (1) further applications of WSNs for underground mining OSH management; (2) application of WSNs from research to real-world practice; (3) big data analytics and management; (4) deploying multiple WSNs-based monitoring systems; (5) integration of WSNs with other communication systems; (6) adapting WSNs to the Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure; and (7) autonomous WSNs.

Problems related to measuring the transmissibility of anti-vibration gloves. Possible efficacy for impact tools used in mining and quarrying activities

AbstractThis commentary takes into account some of the most relevant studies investigating the transmissibility of anti-vibration (AV) gloves. AV gloves are almost useless at the palm level in the low frequencies (less than 31.5 Hz), while they generally start to have an appreciable reduction of the vibration over 400 Hz. In their use with impact tools, having a low dominant vibration frequency usually between 25-60 Hz for chipping hammers and drills, and less than 30 Hz for pneumatic breakers, the average transmissibility reduction at the palm level is 13% (min 2% - max 26%) when used with hammers, and 1% (increment of 4% and reduction of 6%) when used with breakers. The transmissibility at the finger level, especially in the low frequencies, is almost nothing or produces an increase of the vibration. Other problems related to the increase of the applied force and the reduction of dexterity are reported.

Analysis of factors influencing the productivity of hammer drilling - user forces, human fatigue, drilling direction, and drill bit

In order to be able to develop a hammer drill with which the user can work as ergonomically and productively as possible, the relevant influencing factors must be known. In addition to the unknown influence of the drilling direction, there is a lack of understanding of the relations between user forces, human fatigue, and productivity. To analyze these relations, an experiment was carried out with 15 professional users. First, the influence of feed force, drilling direction, and drill bit on the rate of penetration was examined. Taking into account the rate of penetration and human fatigue, it was then investigated which of the three feed forces produces the highest productivity. Furthermore, the lateral forces applied by the participants during the drilling process were analyzed. Based on the study, it was found that the drilling direction (p < .001, r = -0.198) and the drill bit type (p < .041, r = -0.16) have a significant influence on the rate of penetration. Moreover, it was found that the rate of penetration tends to increase with higher feed forces, however, the theoretical cumulative drilling meters decrease when taking user fatigue into account. Finally, the experiment showed that the participating professionals applied lateral forces (Mdn = 16.7 N) of 13% to the feed force when working with a hammer drill. On the basis of this knowledge, investigations can be done to analyze the influences of lateral forces on the drilling process. The findings help drill and hammer drill manufacturers in testing and development processes. For craftsmen, on the other hand, the knowledge helps to perform the task as ergonomically and time-efficiently as possible.

Towards environmental sustainability in the local community: Future insights for managing the hazardous pollutants at construction sites

Although various technologies are being developed in the construction industry, management technologies for achieving environmental sustainability in the local community are still lacking. As such, this study suggests future insights for the development of an automated intelligent environment management system for the promotion of environmental sustainability in the local community, through a systematic review of 1,707 relevant literature. The systematic review was conducted in two steps: (i) quantitative review: keyword co-occurrence and trend analysis; and (ii) qualitative review: a review on monitoring, evaluation, and improvement technologies. As a result, the research level related to the local-level pollutants (noise, vibration, and dust) was found to be quantitatively insufficient, and the limitations of the existing technologies for these pollutants were presented. Eventually, to overcome these limitations, new technologies and application strategies that can be applied to construction sites as future research roadmap to effectively manage the hazardous pollutants were proposed. Furthermore, an intelligent management system should be developed, and the management of environmental complaints is also necessary for environmental sustainability at the local level in the construction industry. As a fundamental study, this study could become a benchmark for future researches dealing with environmental sustainability and hazardous pollutants in the construction industry.
